Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Road Test

With the Ridgeline, Honda has evolved the concept of the pickup, creating a smart truck aimed squarely at the actual needs of most pickup owners. The original, innovative Ridgeline turned off many buyers because of its peculiar styling. The lessons have been learned. As a result, the second-generation Ridgeline looks much more conventional, while being even more sensible. In fact, it is the most civilized pickup truck we've ever tested.

But it isn't a conventional workhorse. Towing capacity at 5,000 pounds is nothing to boast about. The bed is shallow. The Ridgeline is no off-road champ, so this isn't the truck for anyone planning to cross the Rubicon Trail. Payload capacity of 1,325 pounds is comparable to other compact pickups and a couple of hundred pounds less than full-size trucks. On top of these modest credentials, the Ridgeline doesn't project the same indestructible image as other pickups. Instead of evoking frontier-taming fantasies, the Ridgeline aims right at your rationale. And rational it is. The composite bed will never rust and is scratch resistant. The built-in trunk is weathertight, will hold more than just a tool box, and is lockable. The rear gate can either swing out like a door or open like any other truck.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2017 Honda Ridgeline owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Android Auto

"Android Auto stopped being able to show maps. The screen would go black and unresponsive when map was selected. Request Honda to upgrade firmware, but they were unable or unwilling to do so."

Anonymous, TX (2017 Honda Ridgeline RTL 3.5-L V6)

"The Android operating system stopped working intermittently when navigation was being used. It is annoying when actually trying to use the Garmin Nav. Then the Garmin Nav maps were corrupted. I did the map update which also included Garmin updates and it resolved both issues."

Alan G., MD (2017 Honda Ridgeline RTL 3.5-L V6)

"Android Auto is very clunky. Takes a while for the system to pair with phone each time you enter the veh and get set to go. The use of phone navigation via cockpit screen is very nice -- when it works. Frequent / intermittent disconnects/reconnects/disconnects, while you're driving, makes the system unusable. I've resorted to using my phone's (Android Device), Google Maps function, but also bring up the vehicle's (Garmin?) Navigation system, for additional trip info (Google Maps is superior, but the in-car navigation offers info like Speed Limit where you are, Elevation, etc). Cheers! Keep up the good work / Advocacy!"

Charles J., MD (2017 Honda Ridgeline RTL 3.5-L V6)
Apple CarPlay

"Was very glitchy until a recent update. I was pleased that at least Honda chose to continue to update the system (even though the vehicle is a 2017) and not it seems to only glitch occasionally and a reset always fixes the issue. Shouldn't be this way at all, though."

Robert S., AZ (2017 Honda Ridgeline RTL 3.5-L V6)

"Honda interface with Apple Car Play is poor and confusing, and is spontaneously interrupted."

Anonymous, TX (2017 Honda Ridgeline RTL 3.5-L V6)

"Does not see CarPlay when phone is plugged in sometimes"

John R., IL (2017 Honda Ridgeline RTL 3.5-L V6)

"No matter what I do I always have trouble with Apple CarPlay starting up. Honda blames Apple and Apple blames Honda."

David T., FL (2017 Honda Ridgeline RTS 3.5-L V6)
Backup or other camera/sensors

"Camera cable was warn (and finally broke) due to the tailgate opening and closing. More clearance is needed for the backup camera cable."

Anonymous, KS (2017 Honda Ridgeline RTL 3.5-L V6)

"Backup wiring was damaged by the tailgate. The routing of the wiring is a bad design. Dealer replaced wiring harness even though vehicle was out of warranty. Kudos to Honda to cover the repair. On the 2020 model it doesn't appear the wiring harness has been re-routed."

Anonymous, MD (2017 Honda Ridgeline RTL 3.5-L V6)

"Occassionally the backup camera will display a blank screen when in reverse. Dealer found no problem, though it will still occur intermittenly."

Anonymous, NM (2017 Honda Ridgeline RTS 3.5-L V6)

"The camera stopped working due to a frayed wiring harness."

Anonymous, ME (2017 Honda Ridgeline Black Edition 3.5-L V6)

"Camera failed end of May 2020 Dealer changed Camera then system them display screen Tech from Honda was sent to find problem. They Replaced section of wiring harness that fixed problem. Truck at dealership 3 times total days at dealership 17 days."

Anonymous, (2017 Honda Ridgeline Black Edition 3.5-L V6)

"Sometimes the camera does not show anything except the yellow grid"

Anonymous, AL (2017 Honda Ridgeline RTL 3.5-L V6)

"When backing up, there is no visual display of what's behind the car, but the colored lines that overlay the screen are still visible and the audible alerts still work when getting too close to something."

Anonymous, (2017 Honda Ridgeline RTL 3.5-L V6)

"Sensors for parking rain sensor, forward accident sensirs"

John R., BC (2017 Honda Ridgeline 3.5-L V6)
Display screen freezes up

"just freezes at will"

Anonymous, WA (2017 Honda Ridgeline Black Edition 3.5-L V6)

"System Locks up, truck need to be turned off to reset"

John R., IL (2017 Honda Ridgeline RTL 3.5-L V6)
Display screen goes blank

"The display screen did not work. Period within the first 3 weeks of purchase"

Anonymous, FL (2017 Honda Ridgeline RTL 3.5-L V6)

"infotainment system is terrible, no manual buttons makes if difficult to navigate"

Anonymous, IL (2017 Honda Ridgeline RTL 3.5-L V6)

"The whole unit was replaced. No issues since."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Honda Ridgeline RTL 3.5-L V6)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"From time to time the system will not recognize music on my USB flash drive. Then it will start working again. This is very frustrating!"

Anonymous, SK (2017 Honda Ridgeline Black Edition 3.5-L V6)

"Doesn’t pair with phone over Bluetooth. Menus are confusing"

Anonymous, CA (2017 Honda Ridgeline 3.5-L V6)

"Interface confusing and difficult to use. Apple CarPlay connection works sporadically. Software for the system needs refinement. Too many menus and confusing sub-menus. Requires too much attention while driving. Plug in phone connection only works if plugged in before engine is started. Can't use while driving"

Sanford G., CA (2017 Honda Ridgeline 3.5-L V6)

"Hard to explain, but in bluetooth calls, if you do not use the system voice commands or screen menus to dial out, it puts you in a "private mode", and you can hear nothing at all until [or if] someone picks up the call. No dial tone, nothing. It's stupid and distracting"

Anonymous, VA (2017 Honda Ridgeline RTL 3.5-L V6)

"iPod stops paring and won’t play."

Steven L., NY (2017 Honda Ridgeline RTL 3.5-L V6)
Hardware replacement

"When cold (below freezing), all electronic systems would go into alarm and not function. Hill start, anti-lock brakes, stability control, etc. It had to be below 32 degrees in VA to diagnose, so it took years (since new) to get the problem fixed. I had to schedule a meeting with the service manager at the dealer and explain everything to finally make it happen. And once the truck warmed up, you could turn it off and restart it and everything would work. Conditions had to be just right to recreate the issue. Finally they replaced the VSA modulator and that fixed the problem."

Anonymous, (2017 Honda Ridgeline RTS 3.5-L V6)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"Updates were not working. Honda replaced the system."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Honda Ridgeline RTL 3.5-L V6)

"gave me totally wrong travel info to Madison wrong direction on first turn and said 3 hours when its more like 6 hours, my stand alone Garmin was right in-dash garmin was wrong!!"

Anonymous, WI (2017 Honda Ridgeline RTL 3.5-L V6)

"The whole infotainment system clearly sucks. The GPS has frozen-up on me twice. The unit randomly changes between satellite and iphone music source. It does a terrible job recognizing my voice"

Anonymous, TN (2017 Honda Ridgeline RTL 3.5-L V6)

"Gps stopped working and display went black. After 2 months of haggling the unit was completely replaced and had no problems since."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Honda Ridgeline RTL 3.5-L V6)

"The map became corrupted, possibly due to the Android issue. I reinstalled the map (actually the update) and it is now functioning."

Alan G., MD (2017 Honda Ridgeline RTL 3.5-L V6)

"The system, about three times a year, will get lost. it will start telling you to turn when no turn is available, will show you out in a farm field. usually fixed by rebooting the system. it will never do it for the mechanic."

Anonymous, MI (2017 Honda Ridgeline RTL 3.5-L V6)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"When using the Bluetooth connection, it will not allow me to hang up- keeps showing phone is still connected. I need to shut off the ignition before I can make or receive another call"

Anonymous, AL (2017 Honda Ridgeline RTL 3.5-L V6)

"phone does not connect all the time, display switching to handset"

Dan O., NY (2017 Honda Ridgeline RTS 3.5-L V6)

Anonymous, VA (2017 Honda Ridgeline RTL 3.5-L V6)

"Voice commands for phone not being understood"

Gary C., TX (2017 Honda Ridgeline RTL 3.5-L V6)

"it Pairs unreliably. It will work on 3 trips then suddenly on the fourth it pairs but the phone speakers are used even though the dash screen controls work and accurately list the song playing."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Honda Ridgeline Black Edition 3.5-L V6)

"Bluetooth seldom works with my IPhone. Honda blames Apple and vice versa."

David T., FL (2017 Honda Ridgeline RTS 3.5-L V6)
Radio

"keeps disconnecting from antenna for xm radio, just had new antenna installed ,started to disconnect two days later. Disconnects came and go! Very frustrating!!! I thought a new HONDA would be better than my 2008 Ridgeline RTL ! Think I'll look at a new FORD small truck when they become available!!"

Anonymous, WI (2017 Honda Ridgeline RTL 3.5-L V6)
Routine software updates

"Map would not update to latest version and did not change time when moving through time zones."

"navigation maps have never let me update. Dealer not interested."

Geoff W., CA (2017 Honda Ridgeline RTL 3.5-L V6)

What Owners Say

Emission control devices (includes EGR)

Fuel cap

"There is no fuel cap on this model and given the position and orientation of the fuel door, rainwater was getting into the fuel port. There are two plastic flaps in the port and water froze between them in the winter, preventing me from being able to fill the tank."

Anonymous, CT (2017 Honda Ridgeline RTL 3.5-L V6)

"Emissions warning needed to replace the fuel tank cap less spring loaded closure feature, not a big deal but dealer accidentally broke fuel door latch and that replaced that took one extra day"

Sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor)

"The check engine light has come on three or four times even the truck only has about 26,000 miles on it. The dealer just reset the system and told me to run a tank of premium gas to clear it out. This seems like an inadequate fix for the problem, and I suspect that the check engine light is going to keep coming on until the dealer actually does something and fixes the problem."

John M., WA (2017 Honda Ridgeline RTL 3.5-L V6)

Loud sound did not cease. 1 week later the AC was on and noise increased 10x what it was. Next day the heater was on (while driving 70 mph on interstate) and it started to blow smoke filling the cabin...the kind of smoke from a blown motor. Blower stopped altogether at this point. Took back to dealer and they replaced front blower motor. The loud sounds have now stopped and climate system works as expected. This took 2 trips to the dealer, leaving the vehicle with them for a grand total of over 4 nights, and the service manager admitting that they are seeing many Honda's with issues with front blower motor...they suspect issue with manufacturer."

"When using adaptive cruise control at highway speeds the sensors are overly sensitive and trigger automatic emergency braking. (And I mean emergency braking) For instance following a tall 18 wheeler in the right lane of the interstate. The semi exits, is no longer on the interstate, and has begun to slow for his turn on a local road. My hondasenses that I am passing the truck, which is not a factor, but will still apply emergency brakes. Similarly, if I am in the center or left lane and overtaking a vehicle on the right, my Honda will often apply emergency brakes as I approach h to pass. The problem is not exclusive to, but more common with tall 18 wheelers. Also, it seems, to happen more often in bright sunlight, go figure. Finally it is more common if I am in the center lane, a tall vehicle is in the right lane and the highway has a gentle rise and curves to the left. I have addressed the problem with America an Honda who assured me that the vehicle has been checked , under warranty, by local dealers and is performing as designed."

What Owners Say

Timing belt or chain

"Premature failure of tensioner (causing belt wear/replacement). Not yet diagnosed by Honda, but presenting exactly the same as problem in our 2914 Odyssey, and our 2011 Odyssey before that. Honda quality no where near what it used to be. :-("

Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks.

What Owners Say

Engine mounts

"Took three repair attempts involving major work before they solved the problem. Symptoms presented were minor squeaking sounds in cab. Repairs the first time was to replace the rear engine mount. Second repair was the timing belt, idler pulled and water pump. Third repair was to replace the front engine mount and that solved the problem. Hate to see what they would have charged for all the work that didn't produce a result"
