    First Drive: 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale is a Disappointing Effort

    Besides the stiff ride and the loud cabin, this compact SUV offers little Alfa-ness

    The Alfa Romeo Tonale isn’t up to the Italian brand’s standards, whether compared with the Giulia sedan and Stelvio SUV, or even Alfa Romeos of yore. It doesn’t ride well, isn’t particularly sporty, and has a variety of frustrating controls.

    Based on the same platform as the Jeep Compass and new Dodge Hornet, the Tonale is offered only as an all-wheel-drive, plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and comes in three trims: Sprint ($42,995), Ti ($44,995), and Veloce ($47,495).

    We completed 2,000 break-in miles and put the Tonale through more than 50 tests at the CR Auto Test Center, including empirical tests of acceleration, braking, handling, and usability. CR members have access to the full road-test results now.
