Consumer Reports’ auto experts regularly advise buyers that getting a well-maintained 5-year-old vehicle is a smart move. By that stage, it has gone through a significant portion of depreciation. SUVs from 2021 were designed recently enough that their performance in our objective track tests is on a par with brand-new models, particularly when it comes to fuel economy.

To help steer you to the best choices, we’ve assembled a list of the most fuel-efficient 5-year-old hybrid sedans and hatchbacks. All performed well enough in our tests to be recommended when new, and all have average or better reliability, according to Consumer Reports’ Annual Auto Surveys, in which we ask CR members to report any problems they experienced with their own cars. This year, our survey garnered feedback on about 380,000 vehicles. This extensive data set helps us identify which older models continue to offer high owner satisfaction and mechanical health.

We note whether forward collision warning (FCW), automatic emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian detection, blind spot warning (BSW), and rear cross traffic warning (RCTW) were standard or optional at the time.
