This iteration of the Accent scored near the top of our subcompact rankings in both the sedan and hatchback versions. While there's nothing fancy about this car, it does hit the mark for sensible transportation. It's particularly economical to buy and run -- we got 31 mpg with the GLS sedan with an automatic and 32 mpg for the stick-shift Sport hatchback.

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for about 329,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2020 vehicles are holding up in 17 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical system. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2012 Hyundai Accent owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Calipers

"The rear caliers were sticking causing premature wear. The dealer said they couldn't find anything wrong an I paid $350 for new rear pads and a brake fluid change. I believe the calipers were sticking after researching this common problem online"

Anonymous, VA (2012 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)
Normal routine brake wear

"Rear brakes needed replacing in 2014"

Anonymous, ON (2012 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"Replaced rear pads and rotors"

Shari D., MI (2012 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)
Premature brake wear

"Dealer suggested a 450$ brake job for rear wheels at only 23,000KM"

Daniel T., QC (2012 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"hand break seized rear callipers. the dealer said it was lack of maintenance even though I was specifically charged for rear brake maintenance six months earlier"

Richard J., QC (2012 Hyundai Accent)

"The rear brake pads wore down before the front even though they do much less of the stopping. I attribute this premature wear to the rear calipers sticking"

Anonymous, VA (2012 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"I had to do a major brake servIce before it was supposed to happen. The dealer was also servicing another similar vehicle for the same reason at the same time."

Anonymous, WI (2012 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)
Rotors

"Routine replacement of brakes and rotors"

Anonymous, PA (2012 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"Had to resurface the rotors"

Anonymous, HI (2012 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)
Squeaking

"Brakes were squeaking when applying the brakes in reverse."

Anonymous, HI (2012 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"rusting rotors"

Anonymous, NS (2012 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

What Owners Say

Loose exterior trim or moldings

"The clips holding the plastic fenders to the plastic body broke off and a small piece is sticking out. I have seen a few Hyundai Accents with what looks like a similar problem"

Anonymous, FL (2012 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"The car sits so low that the front scrapes on sidewalks and parking berms. The front end molding clips broke and the whole front of the body was lose. We chose to glue it rather than pay the dealer to fix/replace"

Anonymous, AZ (2012 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"The rear and front bumpers covers were coming detached because the clips were not holding the them properly. Front bumper cover especially would come loose if it scraped the curb when parking in a parking space. The dealer admitted it was a problem"

Brian M., PA (2012 Hyundai Accent)

"front bumper bolt broke where it binds to the chassis next to the front tire. Expensive to repair."

Anonymous, UT (2012 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)
Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"the top coat seems very: thin scratches down to the undercoating"

Leonard B., NY (2012 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"The paint on the car is prone to peel away, leaving just primer showing. This started on the hatchback, then the roof just above the windshield and finally the left and right side of the hood. Rust bubbles started on the right rear fender after 2 years of ownership."

Adrian B., ON (2012 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"Paint on the hood and spoiler has faded from the sun"

Anonymous, (2012 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"Fading"

Anonymous, (2012 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)
Rust

"Rust spots appeared in 2014. car driven for about 2.75 years at that point"

D T., AB (2012 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"Though I had the Drivers door power window control panel replaced, the rust problem was my biggest disappointment. The Car was not quite 7 years in service last year when I had it at the dealership for the window control. It is supposed to have a 7 Year rust perforation warranted from the factory. So I pointed out to the service manager that on the drivers side rear fender lip, 2 areas where the paint was bubbling up from beneath and it wouldn't be long before it rusted through. He said they don't cover hoods and fender lips because of stone chips. I showed him that there wasn't any chips in the paint at these pooints, and because I had worked as a body repair and paint person in the past, I knew it was from an assembly area in manufacturing where it was rusting from. He didn't care. I told him that my 97 Honda CRV had no rust on it in the 12 years it was in my family, and my 04 Subaru Baja didn't either after 11 years. If that was what I was to expect from Hyundai, I guess I'll never buy another, and I was looking to buy a new Kona. I eventually wrote to the factory, but it was just a month and a half over 7 years after the car was put into service. No kudos for Hyundai."

Shari D., MI (2012 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)
