This iteration of the Accent scored near the top of our subcompact rankings in both the sedan and hatchback versions. While there's nothing fancy about this car, it does hit the mark for sensible transportation. It's particularly economical to buy and run -- we got 31 mpg with the GLS sedan with an automatic and 32 mpg for the stick-shift Sport hatchback.

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for about 329,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2020 vehicles are holding up in 17 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical system. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2013 Hyundai Accent owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

What Owners Say

Loose exterior trim or moldings

"Right front panel above the tire is continually loose. Also, the car is very low to the ground and the area above the front tires takes quite a beating when going over any type of speed bump or drive no matter how slow you drive"

Anonymous, MD (2013 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"Tape around door frame was coming off. Dealer replaced the tape with no issue. Tape is from factory; is black and avoids painting window frame"

Anonymous, QC (2013 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"The wheel protection trimming was not tightened and shred the first day of purchase"

Anonymous, TX (2013 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"Right front bumper panel came loose."

Paul M., NV (2013 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"Right front side of car fender detached. Just above the tire. Same problem with the 2016 Accent. Must be a design defect."

Marc B., NY (2013 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"VERY hard to judge because of sloping hood. Car back to dealer had to fix engine splash guards being torn off by parking bumpers several times. It is definitely too low to ground to clear bumpers. Front fender is starting to come off because of this too. Needs re-design of it!! not buy again!"

Michele R., FL (2013 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"Black film around doors is peeling"

Anonymous, CO (2013 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"underneath front, there's a piece that comes loose and drags. has to be wired to bumper"

Anonymous, NJ (2013 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"The driver side had a loose part in the undercarriage. Happily, the replacement was included in Hyundai's warranty, so it cost me nothing out of pocket."

Anonymous, (2013 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"The car was to low and bumper would scrape eventually causing bumper to come loose"

Anonymous, (2013 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)
Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"Paint chips easy from rocks, road debris, or getting heavy or odd things out of trunk"

Nancy L., GA (2013 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"The paint on the car has chipped off in several areas, especially on the hood and around the doors, and has rusted. This happened the first year I owned it. Although not related, I enrolled in the Hyundai MPG program, and Hyundai removed me from it"

Anonymous, NC (2013 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"Paint formed bubbles in some areas, which exposed body when burst. As car was purchased used, we don't know if this was original paint or not."

Anonymous, CO (2013 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)
Rust

"Rust spots on hatchback. Repaired"

Donald S., CO (2013 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"There are a few rust spots surfacing. Nothing major yet."

Anonymous, QC (2013 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"Both genders have had that spots I have had to repair the last three years and new rust has again formed over the winter"

Anonymous, ON (2013 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

"Calipers failed causing the pads and rotors to ware out . Calipers were replaced under extended warranty but dealer would not cover the rotor & pads even though they were damaged by the seized caliper ."

James L., NS (2013 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"Rear calipers sized, damaging discs thus requiring replacement and then approximately 8 months later front calipers seized."

Anonymous, ON (2013 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"Right rear brake caliper seized at 59,000 kms. Noticed problem when burning smell appeared and found right rear wheel rim extremely hot. Both rear calipers, discs and pads had to be replaced"

Anonymous, ON (2013 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"Rear caliper froze, causing rotor damage. Resolved by replacement of rear rotors and calipers (including pads)."

Anonymous, NY (2013 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"The calipers locked and destroyed the rotors"

Anonymous, IL (2013 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)
Normal routine brake wear

"Routine wear on brakes; have had both front and back brakes replaced. It was fairly expensive."

Sherry G., ON (2013 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)
Premature brake wear

"I don't know if it was premature. But I heard squeaking and took it to a mechanic to have it checked and I think he did work on the brake pads. He's very reliable, but apparently the problem was no big deal, thank goodness"

Anonymous, IL (2013 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)
Squeaking

"Persistent noise in rear brakes, some squeaking but mostly a low "gurgle." First exam by dealer revealed no problems but 2nd exam revealed brake problems just 3 weeks later"

"It has stopped squeaking. It had squeaked a little off and on but after I took it to the mechanic the speaking stopped"

Anonymous, IL (2013 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, NC (2013 Hyundai Accent None 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"I was driving at night going to work in a divided highway at about 60 miles when the driving window exploded in a 1000 pieces. It really was like a gun shot went off a little unsettling. I think it happened because a defect of the glass even though when I went to the dealer they did not think so and the warranty (5yrs) was expired any way. At the dealer they did not have the spare to repair the car but they called an auto glass repair that did the job the same day. It cost me 240$.
