2024 Hyundai Kona EV Breaks Cover

Redesigned subcompact SUV brings high-tech features to an entry-level segment

    Overview

The previous generation Kona was designed as a conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) subcompact SUV, then essentially converted to create an electric version. Now that EVs are the rage, Hyundai took the opposite approach with the new model, designing it first as an EV.

It is offered in two electric configurations, standard and long range, with a driving range of up to 260 miles.

The Kona and Kona N Line, with gasoline engines, went on sale first, followed by the Kona EV later.

The Kona Electric competes with the Kia Niro EV and Nissan Leaf.

    Impressions

The redesigned Kona is larger than the current model, gaining an inch in height and width, and growing 7.5 inches in length. That should provide a bit more elbow room, as well as cargo space. The electric models also have storage in the front trunk, where the engine would otherwise be.

The styling falls right in line with other recent Hyundais, most notably the Ioniq 5 and Tucson. Angled character lines on the sides somehow lend a computer graphics feel. A clear beltline extends front to back, below the windows, leading into the thin light strip across the front. The top adopts a “floating roof” appearance, due to the black trim on the rear pillar. Dramatic, asymmetrical black plastic wheel arches seem to lend an outdoorsy character, and their shape calls to mind the upcoming redesigned Subaru Crosstrek. Arguably, the wheels may be the most daring design element.

The interior blends ultra-modern and conventional, with dual 12.3-inch screens serving as the instrument panel and infotainment screen. We have seen this configuration on the Ioniq 5, as well. Such large displays make a strong impression. With ultra-luxury models adopting massive screens, it is striking that some lower-priced vehicles are already joining this trend. The Kona is the first Hyundai to boast the automaker’s new Connected Car Navigation Cockpit, with the latest graphics and features.

In addition there are physical buttons and even knobs—not something to be taken for granted on new EVs. Similar to the Ioniq 5, it uses a column-mounted shifter that the driver twists back and forth to select gears.

An available 12-inch head-up display projects key information so the driver can keep their eyes on the road. An eight-speaker Bose stereo will be available.

The car will be able to be accessed via a phone, enabling a variety of controls to be handled remotely, such as unlocking and pre-conditioning the car.

The Kona Electric is offered in two configurations: short and long range. The short range uses a 48.6-kWh battery and has 133 hp. The long range configuration has a 64.8-kWh battery and produces 201 hp. Both versions are front-wheel drive. It supports one-pedal driving, so the driver can control the deceleration with just the right pedal. Drivers can also choose regular coasting.

Hyundai claims the EV can replenish the battery from 10 percent to 80 percent in 43 minutes using a public DC fast charger. The Kona supports bi-directional charging, meaning it can be used to provide energy to power tools and home appliances.

The Kona is offered with a generous roster of advanced driver assistance features, including automatic emergency braking, blind spot warning, lane keeping assistance, adaptive cruise control, rear cross traffic warning, automatic high beams, surround view camera, and remote parking assist.
