Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

The Sport comes with lots of features for the money. It's also roomy, comfortable, fuel-efficient, and stylish. The ride is composed and the cabin is relatively quiet. The base 190-hp, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine provides ample motivation. Combining this with the smooth and responsive six-speed automatic transmission returned an admirable (for the time) 23 mpg overall. The interior has a high-quality look and feel. It's not exactly luxurious, but it is well made and nicely finished.

"The temperature sensor for the air conditioning (AC) would free and then the blower fan would slow down and would not circulate cool air. You would have to shut off the AC then wait a while, turn it on and then go until it slowed down again and did not provide cool air. It took two attempts by the dealership to get it fixed. Part of the diagnostic problem was they would not run the AC long enough for the problem to appear. It would happen on any longer trip (over an hour) so quite regularly as prairie driving is over longer distances. It started right in the. spring/summer of our first year of getting it having purchased it in October. so Spring/Summer 2018 It was resolved in the fall of 2019"

What Owners Say

Rough shifting

"Usually when the engine is cold, but not always, the transmission will not shift gears, causing the engine to rev, without any power to move the car"

Riley S., WA (2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport Base 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Within 1,000 miles, the transmission started shifting extremely rough. Dealer refuses to acknowledge or fix problem. Torque converter slippage is extreme"

Aaron L., VA (2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"only happened first thing in the morning and then would not do it again until the next day shifting from second to third it would run up to 3000 rpm for a split second and the immediately go right back down to 2300 rpm"

Anonymous, NJ (2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"in temperatures 40 degrees and below (mores in below freezing) tray going from 2nd to 3rd transmission delays catching 3rd, engine raves 1,000 to 1,500 high for 1/2 second then catches pretty evenly. After that, shifting is OK. After sitting for several hours, it does the missed shift again. Dealer(Doylestown PA) says their computer checking can not pick up that kind of problem. Told me if the transmission blows up they will give me a new transmission. NOT really helpful!!! On internet I found several others with the same problem. I do not pull any heavy loads, just 3 to 4 people occasionally. 95% driving on level ground."

Anonymous, NJ (2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport 2.0T 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Slipping transmission

"If car is started and drive within a minute or so, shifting from 2nd gear to 3rd gear RPMs jump by 500-600 before 3rd gear "catches". IF it idles for few minutes, 2 or 3, shifting goes easily. In cold weather problem is worse!! After driving for several minutes, shifting is OK. Twice Fred Beans Doylestown PA dealer said evan if they drove it and observed the bad shifting, their program for checking the trans would not pick up the problem (????) It was hinted to me that there might be an engineering problem with the transmission. I was told if the transmission blew apart they would replace it for me. This problem started around 50,000 miles, still here. Other Santa Fe Sport owners have had similar problems, mentioned on Internet."

Engine harness

"During our travels west in early April, we experienced a case in which a flashing Check Engine Light came on in our vehicle. We reported the problem to Hyundai and were told to not drive the vehicle, but to have it towed to the nearest Hyundai dealer, which they very kindly assisted us in doing. After a 3-day delay waiting for new parts to arrive, an updated Knock Sensor Wiring Harness was installed. Then, on our return trip home, we again encountered the Check engine light, but this time since it was not flashing, we were directed to take it to a nearby dealer that examined the vehicle and determined that it would be safe for us to complete our trip home in our car, but to then get it to our home dealer for their evaluation and repair. Upon our return home, we learned from our local Hyundai dealer that the newly replaced harness had apparently been installed incorrectly, so they ordered another new harness and installed it a few days later when the part arrived. Since then we have experienced absolutely no problems with our Hyundai. As for service, we were provided with rental vehicles while awaiting repairs and were treated very well in all three Hyundai dealerships in which we dealt with. All repair bills were covered under the 100,000 mile warranty and, In the interest of goodwill and as a gesture of customer satisfaction, Hyundai has recently notified us that the towing expense we incurred during our trip is to also be reimbursed. So, Hyundai has definitely won us over as prospective life-long customers!"
