The Santa Fe is a pleasant and well-rounded vehicle, but it is starting to show its age. The latest freshening brought a new transmission and more fuel efficiency, but is otherwise modest. Handling is responsive and secure. Front headroom is particularly tight with the optional sunroof. Suspension noise is pronounced.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Owner Satisfaction with:

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"High rpm' s when accelerating = noise. Shifts at the high end of the range. Handles well (AWD). Accelerates well (again noisy)."

Don W., WA (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Good acceleration. Average handling with poor traction in bad weather."

James C., VA (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Great acceleration for a 3.6 litre engine and very good braking."

Anonymous, AB (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"See comments about value in immediately prior response."

Michael E., NC (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"It drives well, and has good acceleration. The shift is very jerky. We have had it into the dealer since it was new, and they say that's the way it is."

Anonymous, TX (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The handling is very good with regards to turning radius. The acceleration is sluggish."

Anonymous, SC (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"the v6 AWD is very responsive and smooth with a minimum of road noise when equiped with good tires."

Anonymous, ON (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"handles great; acceleration is spotty"

Anonymous, IL (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Great styling, handling, has held up well inside and out."

Regina R., VA (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"4 cyl, so must pay attention when needed acceleration. Other wise OK."

Don H., FL (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Very responsive steering, braking, and acceleration. Like driving a sports car only in more comfort. Lots of power (v6)."

Greg F., BC (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"I was reluctant to go to a 4 cylinder after my 6 cylinder Tucson, but the 4 is perky."

Harmon J., TN (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"slow acceleration, not great in mountains"

Anonymous, NC (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Both acceleration and handling are excellent."

Anonymous, PA (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"She is my wife's car, but I drive her on weekends & road-trips. I sought out the V-6 for a reason. She has a 3.5L V-6. We both Love her power, & she handles well for a Chunky Girl!! I can't carve the turns of Rt. 22 Heading upstate, but she can get up and Run in the short passing zones. And our Black Lab drools nicely out of the back windows!"

Bryant P., NY (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Excellent acceleration."

Anonymous, WA (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"When the engine is cold it shifts very hard from 1st to 2nd."

Debra W., WA (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"I like the fact that while driving I'm sitting at good distance above the highway (I am tall). It also handles nicely and I love the way it looks. It is very comfortable."

Anonymous, CT (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"This model has the 6-cyl engine which is plenty powerful for highway and off-road driving. The steering is tight, but the center of gravity is a little high and won't take sever tuning actions without a sense of lean. I also wish there was a break upgrade. While I only have a class 2 hitch, both with and without a trailer, I feel the breaks are inadequate. I have helped the handling with a really good set of Pirelli Scorpion tires."

Steven S., MO (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Clunky ride from shocks and mounts."

Anonymous, NL (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Frequent hesitation during acceleration requires regular addition of fuel additive"

Anonymous, SC (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"My Santa Fe is a 6-cyl and it still gets an average of 22 mpg, 25-26 hwy mpg. For an SUV that is top notch. The 6-cyl has both towing/uphill power and punch when I need it to pass. I own a Hyundai Sonata 2.0L 4-cyl turbo that acts even better and more thrifty. If that engine is offered in the Santa Fe, JUMP ON IT!!"

Steven S., MO (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"More like a truck then smooth riding...plus what I said previously"

Christi S., NJ (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Does not handle well on bumps, curves, or in rain/snow. You can feel the car come off the ground on bumps that are on curves at safe speeds. My wife is afraid to even drive it."

Anonymous, PA (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Great car for road trips. It stays on track easily, and has plenty of power to accelerate and climb hills. I can drive it comfortably for many hours."

Anonymous, OR (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Everything !"

Anonymous, NV (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"3.6 v6 has lots of power to pass on cogested roads"

Anonymous, ON (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Engine tooooooo small 4 cylinder"

Anonymous, MA (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"excellent power and acceleration"

GARY F., OH (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Handles well in snow. Accelerates well considering it is only a 2.4L engine. Great off road as well as driving interstate."

Anonymous, NV (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Very good, ease of control"

Anonymous, LA (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The four cylinder engine is too small for this vehicle."

BERNARD S., CT (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Amazingly quick with V6 engine. Excellent MPG."

Anonymous, IL (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"There is s distinct blind spot when trying to back up or look to the back when driving--this may be styling, but if affects my driving experience"

SUE D., PA (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"We have had repeated problems with the transmission and took it to the dealer a number of times. They have reset the adaptive control numerous times but that has not resolved the issue. We have learned to live with the issue."

Anonymous, GA (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"handles well for an SUV its size; drives as a car - like SUV or CUV"

BOB D., ON (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"4 cylinders do not do this car justice. It's too big, and would be better of with 6 cylinders."

Anonymous, NY (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The Hyundai has a robust ability to accelerate for passing or for getting onto freeways. It has the tightest and best turning radius of any car I have ever owned including our Lexus."

MICHAEL E., NC (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Excellent acceleration requiring little throttle. Good torque even at low RPM. Handling - excessive sway at high speed around tight corners."

JOHN S., ON (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Sometimes transmission slips and jerks from lowest gear, dealer unable to diagnose."

NEIL H., MD (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The 4 cylinder engine is economical but there's no real acceleration. The front wheel drive is quite torquey; the wheels slip easily and are alarming on a wet road."

CLAYTON F., OH (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"They need to include memory for at least one driver. It is very annoying to bring your car in for a wash and have to juggle the seat. Or every time my wife drives the car and tells me she didn't move the seat."

Wallace Z., FL (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Like the heated seats"

Anonymous, VA (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"You feel every bump on the road. The ride is too firm!"

Wayne A., ON (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"noisy suspention."

Anonymous, MD (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The seats are fine. I like that I can raise the seat up to a height--to better see the road ahead. The seat belt is horrible--hits me in the neck. I have to keep pulling on it to get is away from my neck. There is a lot of road noise. The ride is pretty good."

Anonymous, TX (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Stiff ride .... feel every bump on the road. Noisy... very noticeable road noise from the tires into the cabin."

Anonymous, ON (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The seats are comfortable. There is considerable road noise."

Anonymous, SC (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Relatively quiet ride. Comfortable seats."

James C., VA (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Solid. Comfortable heated seats"

Anonymous, IN (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Seats, especially the drivers seat, need more padding."

Anonymous, FL (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The seating is probably the MOST comfortable that my wife and I have ever experienced in any vehicle....VERY impressive!"

Anonymous, MI (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"rear transaxle vent filled with water whenever I launched my boat. The transaxle then failed to work. Added a snorkel tube to prevent the problem. Replaced three transaxles."

Michael H., MI (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Car is quiet, seats are comfortable, a/c vents in back seat, smooth over the road on long trips."

Angus S., NY (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Has been coast to coast in Canada, & a lot of US states. Done several 12 to 16 hour day drives in comfort"

David M., NB (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Roomy solid front seats, high sitting and lots of room for passengers (3) in the back seat."

Greg F., BC (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Pretty good ride. Not great over RR tracks, potholes."

Rick W., GA (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Noisy. Seems still on any bumpy road."

Anonymous, CT (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"This is a mid sized SUV that rides like a car so best of all worlds"

Anonymous, WI (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Santa Fe is fairly quiet. Seats are comfortable and there is plenty of room in the car."

Crystal S., AZ (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"heating system not responsive in 40-55 degree zone."

Anonymous, WA (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Had to add seat cushions...seats not plush at all"

JOHN D., SC (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"suspension is very stiff. It truly rides like a truck"

ART C., FL (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"I don't find the seats comfortable for long period drives, but they are not power seats and therefore lack the ability to "tune" the position."

R M., AZ (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"On the whole this auto is very comfortable, but my wife feels that its ride is rougher than her Lexus 350. The Lexus is a little plusher due to its increased shock capacity."

MICHAEL E., NC (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"No outside air temp gauge. To have one would have been nice"

GUY P., BC (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The seats are one of the most uncomfortable seats I have had in a car. The adjustments on the seat do not help make this a comfortable seat."

Anonymous, IN (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Seats are very comfortable for long trips."

Anonymous, AB (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Noisy suspension."

Anonymous, MD (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The ride in the Santa Fe is probably why we still have it because the seats and riding long distance is probably the best car we have had"

KAY T., MN (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Car overall rides fairly well. Climate control has had to problems whether for heat or air conditioning. Seats are comfortable. A little noisy but OK and the ride is rough on bumpy roads or ruts."

PHIL Y., CA (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The noise outside windows level is high, but we did add rain guards which might explain this"

MARIAN M., AL (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Lot of road noise making hard to hold a conversation. Overall very comfortable"

BRIAN I., QC (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Drivers seats too short for me (6' 1")"

Anonymous, ON (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"find it very comfortable"

Anonymous, ON (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The car is small enough for my wife to ride drive around in the city with ease and that is good enough. As for ride it is like a tank. We took it on a trip from Dallas to Memphis shortly after we got it and the comfort level was very poor."

Anonymous, TX (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"It's too noisy. I hear a whine from the tire noise that is irritating."

JAMES K., MN (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Ride is not stiff enough taking corners but too stiff at low speed over rough roads."

JOHN S., ON (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"We are a bit disappointed with the amount of road noise."

ROBERT K., AB (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Very harsh ride, although handling is ok"

Anonymous, SK (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"Good price/value compared to Toyota and Honda"

Anonymous, WA (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The features of the car were decisive. At the time of purchase in 2011 it gave you the economy of a smaller SUV in a midsize, and had the best features. And it is has a timing chain instead of a belt...."

Angus S., NY (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"This is an outstanding machine for the money. Well engineered and dependable."

Wallace Z., FL (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Good value for the money. Handles well, interior holds up well, paint has held up (but it lives in a garage). Sound system not great and navigation system is clunky and hasn’t been updated."

Regina R., VA (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Got a great incentive deal on the SUV from the dealership along with other "throw-ins" I.e. paint protections, cargo linerand winter tires."

Anonymous, AB (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Very reliable vehicle, I have regular oil changes and maintenance and no major problems. Wish it had a better paint job."

Anonymous, NC (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The car is roomy, holds a lot of cargo in rear compartment. It handles very well with an extremely tight turning radius, great acceleration. Within the past year the viscous coupling failed, but was replaced by Hyundai under the ten year drive train warranty. Also the driver side door remote key actuator has failed and must be replaced. Finally, also about a year ago a stabilizer bar underneath the car had to be replaced to deal with a noise which occurred while backing up. The last two are not or were not covered by warranty."

Michael E., NC (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Gas mileage is decent. Good comfortable car for longer trips. Very dependable for daily driving."

Anonymous, PA (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Great SUV for the price, rides well. comfortable, large storage capacity. Will buy again."

Gail B., PA (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The 4 cylinder has plenty of power."

Harmon J., TN (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Looks good, drives great, great gas mileage. Nuff said."

Anonymous, MO (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Extremely pleased with the value."

Wayne A., ON (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Amazing value for price paid (about $22K all in). 4 cylinder is enough power as is Front Wheel drive with traction control. No need for AWD and 6 cylinders"

William O., NJ (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"This model year was the next to the last year with the box design. I bought it new with the 6-cylindar engine and sport edition AWD features and design. I get above average city and open highway mileage for a 6 cyl SUV and it burns regular gas. I use it primarily for local driving (75 mile radius) and for hauling. It has one of the largest cargo volumes for a mid-size SUV and the AWD takes me into the woods and up our gravel hill all-year round (especially in snow). And all this for about $23K. Best auto value I've ever owned."

Steven S., MO (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"many extra convenience features included"

Raymond L., ME (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"It is priced very well and overall I have not had major problems with the car,. However, ever since I purchased the car the acceleration is poor. Right after purchasing I took the care back many times to have the transmission checked because it hesitates and sounds like you are forcing the engine when you accelerate and that it needs to shift. They never found anything wrong and said that's how it drives. It's never changed!"

Christi S., NJ (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"No repairs except for warranted work over 7 years in a small SUV."

Ronald R., AZ (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Would like for the engine to be more responsive but very good overall."

Anonymous, NL (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Warranty is one of the longest duration"

Anonymous, MD (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Really is a good vehicle especially when you consider the $24000 all in price I paid."

Mark M., TX (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"It was a mid size SUV with the same economy as a smaller one and offered more features like rear air conditioning vents and a timing chain instead of a belt."

ANGUS S., NY (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The quality of the vehicle overall is very good and the price was very good. It has been a positive experience owning this vehicle. We plan on continuing to own and drive this vehicle for many years to come."

Anonymous, BC (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Good in snow and icey conditions"

Anonymous, ON (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"V6 2010 Santa Fe has been good bang for buck. Superb highway vehicle. Handles snow & towing well. A design weakness may expose it to suspension stress; part of such replaced once per manufacturer/dealer. Well designed car-like SUV. V6s are tough to get now. Tows 3500 pounds well; no need for backup camera"

BOB D., ON (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"worth every dollar I paid for it"

Anonymous, ON (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"I have not had any expenses other than regularly scheduled maintenance."

Anonymous, AL (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"I have had 2 Sante Fe's now and would strongly consider buying again except they have changed the configuration which makes a third row seat mandatory and a "trunk" space not available. As I am usually alone a third seat is a complete waste of space and weight."

GREG L., SK (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"I bought it from CarMax for their premium price. The tire tread was 1/32 over their allowable minimum and I had to replace the tires within 3 months. So my beef is with CarMax."

CLAYTON F., OH (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

Styling

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

"I tested all the available SUV's before I purchased the Santa Fe. I liked the look of it inside & outside and I still feel the same way about it today. Love it!"

Anonymous, ON (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The 2010 Santa Fe SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) was in the middle of its styling period. I bought it for it Utility features. In 2013 the style changed to emphasize a Sport image, a more sloped back end. It ruined it as a Utility vehicle so I am SO glad I got the 2010 model with a several of years to iron out the bugs and a several years to keep tweaking the systems."

STEVEN S., MO (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Has blind spots on the drivers side, where through frame meets the windshield"

Anonymous, MA (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"It looks muscular and curvy"

ANGUS S., NY (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The styling in the 10 is good...but the taillights take on water...had 1 replaced twice and still has a leak..."

KAY T., MN (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe)
