The Santa Fe is a pleasant and well-rounded vehicle, but it is starting to show its age. The latest freshening brought a new transmission and more fuel efficiency, but is otherwise modest. Handling is responsive and secure. Front headroom is particularly tight with the optional sunroof. Suspension noise is pronounced.

Rotors

"Although the Rotors were under an extended warranty with Hyundai, when they ceased on me, the local dealership was booking appointments two weeks out. As I needed my vehicle I had to bring it to another garage to be fixed. When I asked Hyundai Canada to reimburse me for the warranty parts, they forwarded my request to the local dealership, who never contacted me, but advised Hyundai Canada that they we had worked out a compromise and that both parties were happy. When I advised Hyundai Canada that the dealership had not contacted me, there response was, it was out of there hands, as the dealership told them the situation was resolved. Six of our last seven vehicles were Hyundai's and we have always been happy with the dealerships and services, until we moved to Newfoundland in 2015. We plan on replacing both vehicles within the next 24 months, and Hyundai will not be on our shopping list."

What Owners Say

Gear selector or linkage

Rough shifting

"Over a period of a couple of years I've heard a spin-up/whining and also a scraping noise develop gradually. It started as a grinding/skidding sounds as it shifts up between the lower gears, mostly when the vehicle and fluids are cold. Now the whining noise is more constant and the skidding is loud. It's beginning to shift hard when it's cold. Mechanic couldn't identify the problem for ages and now recommends it's not worth working on because a transmission is too expensive of a job. The FWD version of my vehicle has a recall on the right side output gear, and the symptoms described for that problem match what's been happening to my AWD, but it's not included in the recall."

Automatic climate control

"I tend to adjust my temperature setting manually even though I have an Automatic climate control system. To change temperature up or down one rotates a round knob withing the control module for the climate system. Normally each slight turn raises or lowers the temp by one degree. In the last year each slight turn causes the system to jump erratically to a much higher or lower temperature, regardless of the original direction of the turn. After repeated fiddling with the knob I ultimately can get the setting I desire. I believe the control module is failing and will probably have to be replaced at some unknown time in the future. Researching Hyundai customer websites, it appears that these modules fail with some frequency and the cost of replacement seems to run about $800-$1,000."

Michael E., NC (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Screen went dark and whole control unit was replaced. Warranty covered it."

Joe S., SC (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"The temperature dial for the driver's side temp began to fail. If I was at 70 degrees and wanted to change the temp to 72 and began to dial up to that number it might jump to 66 or 74 and the next turn would be equally erratic. Eventually, with persistence I could get it to land on the right number. The heated passenger seat control lost its ability to have a light come on when activated, or it would show the high setting but not the low setting. The power windows accuator failed and a local garage replaced the part which corrected the problem."

Michael E., NC (2010 Hyundai Santa Fe Limited 3.5-L V6)

Brought it the following week for the repair, but they required some additional parts, but now my vehicle was not safe to drive. Repair was done 4 or 5 months ago. As my engine light started coming on again, I brought it in and was advised that my vehicle has the same issue again. Not sure if it was defective parts or poor workmanship."

Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
