The Santa Fe is a pleasant and well-rounded vehicle, but it is starting to show its age. The latest freshening brought a new transmission and more fuel efficiency, but is otherwise modest. Handling is responsive and secure. Front headroom is particularly tight with the optional sunroof. Suspension noise is pronounced.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

What Owners Say

"With the V6, it is extremely easy to handle."

Anonymous, SK (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The 6 cyl Sante Fe responds quickly to the accelerator with good pep and for routine towing, the car handles well."

Glenn E., GA (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Great acceleration, but has loose handling while accelerating."

H N., GA (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Handles well in the rain and snow and the acceleration is a lot more than I expected."

Anonymous, CO (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"good pickup speed, handles well, all wheel drive is excellent."

John G., VA (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"great acceleration"

Edward L., CA (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Most difficult car to drive I have ever owned. Seems to require many steering movements and a lot of attention."

Anonymous, OH (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"It doesn't seem to have a well mannered side, that is when i touch the accelerator it seems to want to run out from under me. That's not the way I drive in a parking lot."

Larry M., GA (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"We owned 3 Jeeps and only exceeded 20 mpg on long trips. The Hyundai averages over 20 mpg and has 150,000 miles on it. The 6 speed transmission is excellent."

R G., NY (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Gas pedal is a bit touchy from a dead stop -- you have to be very gentle or you spin the tires."

THOMAS G., NH (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Break peddle is too low. Hyundai insist there is nothing wrong. Peddle can be pumped to raise level. Distance of travel of the peddle to get braking action is an issue."

ART P., AZ (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The V6 has amazing power and accelerates very quickly. This is my first SUV so when I pass another vehicle at full power I really have to hold on to it since it is tall it handles differently than a vehicle closer to the ground, so I have to pass without stomping the accelerator to the floor until I get used to it..although handling is still ultimately secure."

Anonymous, ON (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"I would like it to accelerate a bit faster- but the larger engine does. Also, the turning radius is awesomely tight. I don't really like the ride of all wheel drive vehicles, but the swerve control is really good,"

Anonymous, CA (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Handling is generally very good for an SUV, and acceleration is impressive. I routinely pass cars on two lane highways, quickly reaching speeds of over 90 mph."

VARD N., CO (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The V6 engine is very good on fuel compared to my old 4runner. Can't think of any bad."

DAVID J., MA (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"It accelerates very well even up steep grades and handles well in the snow."

JUSTIN N., CO (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"drives and handles well. ride is somewhat bumpy on city streets"

Anonymous, GA (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"handles quite well but lack a bit on acceleration and the ride is a bit choppy"

GERRY L., AB (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"It has the v6 and gets terrific acceleration. It can be fun to drive, taking corners weigh ease."

Anonymous, SC (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The Santa Fe still has "jack-rabbit acceleration" which I've experienced since i bought this vehicle! Also the gas mileage could be improved on."

RONALD M., PA (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The six speed transmission is excellent. It can shift into top (overdrive) gear at 42 mph if one is gentle with the accelerator. If one is in a hurry, the 6 cylinder engine will move you very quickly to any legal speed. This is a great combination of performance features."

R G., NY (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"LIKE THE 3.5 L ENGINE POWER"

G J., BC (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"It gets 23MPG overall and can get 30MPG on highway. It will accelerate thru quarter mile in under 16 seconds. The handling is not great, but is as good or better than most SUVs or Xovers"

DAVE C., MO (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"4 cylinder is snappy but transmission sluggish when changing gears" when accellerating."

Anonymous, TX (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The ride is rough, the acceleration and handling are fine."

EDWARD F., WI (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Being a V6 it has tons of power as the 4 Cyl for this year was lethargic. Our 2015 Sante Fe has a 4 and it is a different being. However, it is a little fuel thirsty compared with the new 4 Cyl but not overly so for a 2011. Handling is excellent but the ride can be a little stiff with only one person aboard. Not uncomfortable but a little more truck like than the 2015."

RANDY H., ON (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Smooth acceleration and handling. Steering is smooth, not touchy."

Daniel D., FL (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The rear suspension isn't as strong as it should be. Visibility when clearing the blind area is somewhat restricted."

Anonymous, TX (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Accelerates well and handles well, even in winter. Good traction on snow. One negative for me (I'm short) are the outside mirrors seem large and block things."

D V., MI (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"AWD handles Canadian snowy winters easily. It also performed well on the highways on the way to Phoenix. And during a month we spent there"

D C., ON (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Drives well (not excellent) on smooth roads. Uneven pavement presents minor challenges. Acceleration is good, not neck-snapping."

Vard N., CO (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The 2011-12 Santa Fe has a 3.3lt v6 engine. The new one, since 2013 only have this engine on the LX version. I am not buying a new Santa FE because the 3.3 is not offer in the 5 passanger version."

Anonymous, ON (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"All around good handling car"

Anonymous, AB (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Good acceleration, OK handling"

Anonymous, MN (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Acceleration is quite good with the stronger engine option in this. Handling is okay for a typical vehicle like this."

Anonymous, NH (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"It is very consistent in handling and acceleration"

Anonymous, OR (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Really gets it done. Picks up speed and brakes well."

Anonymous, FL (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Great for intown parking, turning, comfort, visibility. easy to get in and out of vehicle, loading & unloading!"

Anonymous, CA (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"For an SUV this is a speedster and performs well in all conditions from snow to rain to desert heat. I'm always surprised at how well it handles for and SUV."

Pugh D., AZ (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"On hard acceleration traction control pulls the steering wheel"

Anonymous, VA (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The v 6 is accelerates very quickly, great passing power. Pulls my 16ft boat easily Handles fine , like An Suv"

Rickey R., OK (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Handles quite well. Accelleration good. AWD sometimes essential in winter getting in and out of sloping driveway."

Anonymous, NY (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Awesome acceleration! Tight responsive handing"

Anonymous, AB (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"acceleration is excellent, handles great on road trips, great gas mileage 28-32 mpg on highway driving."

Martin D., VA (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"It’s wonderful to drive and easy to park. Even my son and husband love driving it...it’s fun."

Anonymous, NE (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The Sante Fe I have only has the 4 cylinder engine in it. Acceleration is very poor because the engine is too small for the size and weight of the SUV. it will stay at 80 mph all day long on level roads but hills will slow it down quickly. Trying to pass on a 2 lane road or up a hill is almost impossible unless you have a very good running start. Next time I will get the bigger engine in no matter what small SUV I will buy."

Mark G., VA (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"I never expected an SUV to be this way! It handles very well...almost like a car and it has enough power that you have to, in some situations, take it easy. I couldn't get over how fast it accelerates!"

Anonymous, ON (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"great pep"

Anonymous, NJ (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Great acceleration-very important when entering , merging onto highways and passing. Very sensitive handling which I found to be an unexpected advantage."

Dorothy L., GA (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Drives and handles quite well but engine is geared quite low so it revs rather high when under load. Makes it noisy and gas mileage suffers."

William G., NY (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"The ride is rather rough and bumpy. The seats are comfortable. It is also noisy in the car. I assume this is because the car is lighter weight. When a door is closed it sounds very hollow."

Karen H., KS (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"A little truck-like"

Anonymous, IA (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"rough ride and road noice"

Anonymous, WA (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Car has lots of room and seats are comfortable, ride is a little stiff on bumpy roads."

John B., TX (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The only (minor) complaint I have with this car is - for me - the front passenger seat is a little uncomfortable wrt lumbar support."

Paul M., NY (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Road noice is unacceptable.. Sound of doors is like a tin can when you close them."

Anonymous, GA (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Stiffest ride I've ever had in a car."

Karen S., MI (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Seats are comfortable enough but we got fabric instead of leather as we were getting a puppy. There hasn't been any issue with the dog as she rides well in the rear but the fabric in the front seats hasn't worn well and there is some distortion/indentation on drivers seat and fabric wear again after that seat was replaced at approx. 16000 miles."

Anonymous, TX (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Rides like a truck. Expected a softer ride."

Anonymous, OH (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"heavy vehicle, rides very well"

Anonymous, NC (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Lots of noise from the components in the suspension. Was a known fact when I bought it."

Anonymous, SK (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The seats do not have enough adjustments to make them completely comfortable. The passenger seat will only lean up or back. So the seats are not that comfortable."

CAROLE N., GA (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Insulating vehicle occupants from outside noise could be improved."

THOMAS C., NY (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The limited was sold with built in gps, but we found that it cannot be upgraded and what is there cannot be trusted as it often gives wrong directions."

CAROLANN S., ON (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Not large enough seating. I am tall and cramped."

JOHN S., GA (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"I am a large man and the seat does not provide enough support under my legs because it is too short."

WILLIAM K., AL (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Back support adjustment could provide more low back support. Head supports force head forward to an uncomfortable position. Seat belts cut across my ne k, can't adjust for optimal comfort."

SUSAN K., NY (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Has a rather harsh ride on rough roads. Seats are comfortable, but could use a little more aft adjustment. (I'm 6' tall). Climate control is fair. Have to fiddle with fan to get sufficient cooling, because AUTO seems a little less than needed on sunny days. If I increase fan level, the cooling capacity is fine."

RONALD C., IL (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Driver seating is not as comfortable as I'd like. (I got the cheap manually adjustable version.) Also, you have to have the seatback a bit reclined, because if you like to sit upright you'll find that the head restraint it in contact with the back of your head. Ride is kind of stiff - you feel every bump in the road."

THOMAS G., NH (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"I am tall from the waist up and I have difficulty in entering many vehicles. The Santa Fe is one of the few vehicles in which I am comfortable for entry and exit."

A B., BC (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"I have lower back issues from time to time and this car has the most comfortable seats I have ever had in a vehicle"

DAVID H., ON (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Very little noise, even temp, good view of road and other cars"

AE A., PA (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"I have long legs and seat adjustment is not adaptable as it should be."

Anonymous, NY (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Front seats are to close to the wheel, impossible to push back far enough to be comfortable. Can't imagine anyone over 5' 4" being comfortable, as my head almost hits the visor."

Anonymous, IL (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The ride is a bit choppy but overall, a great SUV. The mileage is a bit less than expected but it is only a 4 cy should have had the 6 cyl"

GERRY L., AB (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The ride is a bit stiff and acceleration a bit jumpy....the seats are easy to adjust, but somewhat firm and stiff especially if making a long drive."

CATHERINE P., NC (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Power adjustable driver seat can be made very comfortable, even for long trips. Passenger seat is also quite good. Noise while traveling at highway speeds is not so good. Quite a bit of wind noise, which seems unnecessary. Ride is pretty good on most surfaces. Air conditioner and heater are a bit anemic for a car of this class, but the job gets done eventually."

VARD N., CO (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"This vehicle is impressively quiet. Even with the radio on at med/low volume I can whisper to my passenger and carry on a conversation! It is easy getting in and out. It has a firm ride but still comfortable."

Anonymous, ON (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Needs improved air flow to rear seats, uncomfortable on hot days."

LARRY M., GA (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Moderate road noise from tires and bumps"

Anonymous, PA (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The ride is a little noisy and front suspension is kind of klunky."

Anonymous, NC (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The ride is fine, but it there is a lot of air noise. Acceleration is very good. Turning readies is exceptionally good. Living in/near mountains I appreciate the downshift feature."

C S., NM (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The seats are a bit stiff and not as deep as I'd like. Overall I feel like my head is pushed forward and he lumbar adjustment is not very good. It is just not comfortable for me to drive."

Anonymous, SC (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The vehicle rides very well and the seats are comfortable on long trips."

"Pretty high noise level"

Anonymous, MN (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

Anonymous, NJ (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Seats are hard and stiff"

Anonymous, VA (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"seats are comfortable and are easy to get in and out of. Some wind noise, the ride is good on long trips"

Michael R., WA (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Very comfortable front and rear seats. Smooth ride with minimal road noise."

Dorothy L., GA (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Kind of a hard ride but it is a SUV so to be expected. Interior leather seats are very comfortable and still look great after 7 yrs"

Anonymous, MD (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Easy ingress/egress. Comfortable driving position adjustable with buttons."

Charles S., TX (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Ride is certainly not as smooth as our other vehicle, but we do like the maneuverability, however has millage is worse that our v6 van"

Larry B., ON (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The Santa Fe has very comfortable seats that don't hurt my back on longer trips. It is quiet enough that I don't have to raise my voice to talk to a passenger. The ride is well balanced and not jarring on rough roads...I always feel in control."

Anonymous, ON (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"Comparably equipped Honda's costs $1500-$2000 more, and they did not offer the six cylinder. In the Sante Fe I got power to tow a vehicle and at a lower price."

Glenn E., GA (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"For the price, the Hyundai Santa Fe was a great value: Good gas mileage on the highway, good acceleration, comfortable seats, large space with the seats folded down, good handling, and a good sound system."

Anonymous, CA (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Much better price that the competition."

Anonymous, ON (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"A very good car, great gas mileage, somewhat noisy, good styling, comfortable, but minor inside trim problems with seat belts and light lens, poor radio and speakers."

John G., VA (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"A little high relative to other vehicles"

Anonymous, IA (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The limited model was a jump in pricing. Leather seating is comfortable, the moon roof adds interior lighting on darker days and the storage space is greater than similar mid-sized SUV's"

R G., NY (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"We bought on year end closeout but have had for 6 years and 146,000 miles and never in the shop for other than regular maintenance."

John B., TX (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"I bought it as a certified used vehicle in 2014 with 15,000 miles on it for $15,600 which i though was a pretty decent value"

MICHAEL G., NY (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"No problems, no repairs. Comfortable and reliable."

Anonymous, MO (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"I believe we received great value. The dealer had dropped the price from 28,600 to 49,900 that persuaded us to buy. It hauls our golf clubs, a ski rack fits on top, and we can tow our 14' lake boat with the 3.5 engine. It is a great all around vehicle, and hauls 4 adults. A great value."

STEVEN S., OR (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"A lot of options for the price paid. Compared to other SUVs."

Anonymous, MO (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Comparable to & better than most for the price. I would like they had better colour choices. Been very good & reliable car so far but only have 70,000kilometers on vehicle so far."

STEVEN W., ON (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Compared to Toyota, Mazda and Honda it has more than what I expected. Even though I gave up some cargo room."

DAVID J., MA (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"I would buy a Santa Fe again."

Anonymous, NS (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Overall it has been a fairly comfortable vehicle with good acceleration and handling. AC works well and seats are comfortable. I feel the vehicle was very well equipped for the price paid."

Anonymous, NC (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"This car has been very good for us. The warranty was good and it feels like we have gotten our money's worth out of the car."

Anonymous, CO (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The vehicle is great, but the dealer is crooked as a snake. We got tired of $300 oil changes so the minute the warranty was off we went to an independent mechanic with reasonable rates and doesn't lie to us about what the car needs."

David C., NB (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Hyundai is hard to beat. The Santa Fe is the right size with room for passengers and gear without being overly large."

Anonymous, NY (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Low maintenance."

Roger W., NV (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"For the price, the car was designed with thoughtfulness."

D V., MI (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"For the purchase price, this vehicle delivered a lot of standard equipment. And its fuel economy vs performance remains better than most SUVs offer new today."

Bryan W., MA (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"I like how it looks inside and out. It is not a luxury car, but it drives fine, the leather inside is very nice and it works well for our family of 4 with 2 kids under 6."

Ian R., PA (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Very good value until three significant repairs in last six months."

Anonymous, MN (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"This model has everything you could want from heated seats to navigation and a sunroof in a smaller SUV. The price was less than Honda at the time of purchase. It has been virtually trouble free mechanically. I would buy another one."

Anonymous, VA (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"To date haven’t spent money on repairs"

Jim M., ON (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Excellent value with sunroof, heated seats, leather trimmed seats At time of purchase Honda CRV and Toyota RAV4 were more money to be equipped the same plus they were 4 cylinder and the Santa Fe was a V6 with AWD"

D C., ON (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Great little SUV. Holds a lot of stuff and gets the job done."

Anonymous, TN (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"This is an amazing vehicle loaded with features and purchased at a very reasonable price. One of the best things about being a Hyundai is the excellent warranty and generally high level of service offered at the dealerships. This is our long distance driving vehicle and it always preforms and is comfortable and reliable."

Pugh D., AZ (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"It was so much car for the money when we bought it and it is still going strong."

Anonymous, LA (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"very reliable had only 2 problems, radio and an abs sensor failed after 76000 miles. Warranty is excellent, it covered the abs sensor and the radio."

Martin D., VA (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"The car has been defect free. I've done all the scheduled maintenance and there haven't been ANY problems with the vehicle."

Anonymous, CA (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"Because of the 10-year, 100,000 mile warranty I can drive almost worry-free. It has had very few problems over the 74,000 miles its been driven."

Bob M., MN (2011 Hyundai Santa Fe)

"We had to go to an out-of-state dealer about 400 miles away to get the AWD version we wanted. The trip cost us about $400.00, but we paid less than $25,000 for the car (received a discount for using Hyundai financing--which we paid off after 3 months). The car has been 100% reliable. Besides scheduled items, the only other maintenance expenses have been 2 batteries and a new set of tires."
