Revised for 2018, the Hyundai Sonata keeps much of what makes it a strong competitor against such big dogs as the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry, while making some notable enhancements. Look beyond the freshened skin, and you'll find a Sonata with sharper handling and better braking than before, but the ride has become considerably firmer.

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for about 329,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2020 vehicles are holding up in 17 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical system. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

What Owners Say

Engine harness

"Faulty wiring for the engine knock sensor caused the car to go into "limp mode" when my wife and I were 600 miles from home. We had to leave the car in Charlotte, NC, for repair. Unfortunately, Hyundai had a huge backlog of vehicles with similar problems which meant we had to drive a rental car for nearly 3 months before our car was fixed and returned to us. Then, 48 hours after getting the car back, the engine light came on again. We took it back to your Hyundai dealer who kept the car for another 2 weeks before parts were available. Apparently, the technician in Charlotte wired the car incorrectly. After being without our new car for nearly 4 months, we got it back and it's been driving well ever since."

Anonymous, KY (2018 Hyundai Sonata Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"There was a recall to upgrade some software. After having that upgrade performed while on a 200 mile trip, the engine went into safety mode, not allowing me to drive over 50mph. I had to call for a tow, had to get an uber to take me to a separate location than my wife who went with the car. This all happened approximately 75 miles from home making it extremely inconvenient. The issue was with the wiring harness and the dealer had the car for 3 months since there were so many instances of this occurring. I was happy to have a loaner, but it was extremely irritating to not get updates from the dealer unless I called. They did not reimburse for the uber that I had to take to actually get a rental care for a day so that I could get to my destination. My wife had to miss the event altogether to take care of my car (she's a saint). Ultimately things were taken care of but it was a very frustrating event."

Anonymous, IL (2018 Hyundai Sonata SE 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Car was recalled for engine harness issues. Engine cut off while driving. Back order on fix. Have a loner car. Car has been at dealer waiting for repair for over 1 month. Don't know when car will be fixed."

Anonymous, NJ (2018 Hyundai Sonata ECO 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Spark plugs or wires failure

"Because the wording covers are SOY based and the car is parked outside, I have spent $900 or more on having the wires to driving lights, parking lights, headlights, and trunk beep replaced. In a word. Rodents. They are eating my car. Had I known this were an issue I never would have leased it and I cannot wait to turn it in."
