CR's Take

The new Q has a smooth, refined V8, but the ride and handling of this big rear-drive sedan are not quite world class. Rear-seat room is also disappointing. Up-to-date safety equipment includes active front-seat headrests and standard head-protection air bags that cover front and rear. An optional voice-activated system allows the driver to control audio, climate-control, and navigation functions. Mastering this system takes patience and practice, and may cause a good deal of frustration. Other high-tech options include a rear-view camera system and an adaptive cruise control that uses laser sensors to keep the car at a preset distance from the vehicle in front of it.

2002 Redesign Year

The flagship of the Infiniti line, the Q45 sedan boasts a powerful V8 and strong acceleration, though it is too big to be agile. The Q45 was marketed as a sporty alternative to the Lexus LS, but handling wasn't sporty, and the car lacked the spacious rear-seat and rich cabin materials found on direct competitors. The "Q" was redesigned for 2002, when it picked up a 340-hp V8, but the ride and handling still aren't world-class. Rear seat room is still disappointing. At least the "Q" offers a wealth of safety equipment and high-tech gadgets, such as a navigation system and backup camera. The Q45 was discontinued after the 2006 model year.

The Q45a features a hydraulically operated "active" suspension; the ride is fine even without it. The Q45t has a stiffer suspension for sportier handling. The Q45 was redesigned for 1997, trading in its sporty personality for more of a luxury-cruiser feel. Nevertheless, it lacked the rear-seat roominess and rich cabin materials found on direct competitors.
