CR's Take

Infiniti's QX50 dates back to 2008. For 2016 it gets a freshening and a 3-inch-longer wheelbase, which grants more than 4 additional inches to rear-seat leg and knee room. But underneath, it's still essentially a raised-wagon version of the old G37 sedan, a car we liked very much for its quickness, agility, and composed ride. Carrying over is the smooth seven-speed automatic and 325-hp, 3.7-liter V6, which remains punchy but tends to be noisy by current standards. Modest exterior changes include LED daytime running lights, and a new styling treatments. Up-to-date safety features include blind-spot warning, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and full speed-range adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning.

Current Generation

The redesigned Infiniti QX50 is powered by a 268-hp, 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine mated to a continuously variable transmission. The variable-compression engine is supposed to deliver the power of a V6 and the fuel economy of a four-cylinder. But while acceleration is competitive, we got just 22 mpg overall in our AWD test car. The fit and finish of the interior is impressive and the cabin is quiet and roomy. The QX50 has lackluster, but secure, handling. We found the ride to be mostly calm, but some impacts are stiffer than expected. The convoluted controls are very confusing and distracting. Infiniti's optional ProPilot Assist feature can keep the QX in its lane and maintain and adjust speed according to traffic which can be a convenience in stop and go driving. Standard safety features include forward collision warning, blind spot warning, and lane keeping assist. Updates for 2021 include standard heated front seats for most trim lines. Changes for 2022 include a number of interior and exterior styling updates, as well as standard wireless Apple CarPlay compatibility. All models also come standard with ProPilot Assist, which includes blind spot intervention, adaptive cruise control, and lane departure prevention. For 2025, AWD is standard on all trims.

2014 Redesign Year

Infiniti changed the EX name to QX50 from 2014 onward. The QX50 is an offering in the expanding market for small upscale SUVs. It's essentially a raised wagon version of the former Infiniti G sedan, with which it shares a very nice powertrain. the QX50 handles with agility, but this small pseudo-SUV is quieter and has a slightly more comfortable ride than its sedan sibling. The rear seat, however, is very snug and the cargo area is small. Styling compromised rear visibility somewhat. An optional lane-departure system beeps to remind drivers to keep the vehicle on course.
