    Jeep Compass Road Test

    Introduction

Despite its facelift that mimicks the look of the (much-better) Grand Cherokee, the Compass is mediocre. The engine is noisy, lacks punch and the continuously variable transmission accentuates its unpleasant growl. Handling is unimpressive, the seats are second-rate and the driving position is flawed. The cabin feels claustrophobic, visibility is problematic and access is hampered by a tall doorsill. On the credit side, road noise is low, the ride is absorbent and controls are simple and straightforward. However, the Compass scores low among small SUV competition.

    Notable changes

The underachieving CVT was replaced by a six-speed automatic for 2014.
