Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Something of a Swiss Army Knife among midsized SUVs, the Grand Cherokee is a versatile, well-rounded vehicle. When properly equipped, it is capable on or off road. It also makes a good choice for trailer towing. The ride is comfortable and the interior is quiet, as well as nicely finished.

A 2014 freshening brought a significant boost to the Grand Cherokee's road-test score. Improved controls, better fit and finish and a new eight-speed automatic -- which improves performance -- are high points of this update. Unfortunately, the transmission did nothing to improve the overall fuel economy of the V6 version we tested.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

“Car has been in shop five (5) times for sensor that brakes the car when it gets close to another vehicle although there is never a vehicle near me when the car automatically brakes. The dealership is horrendous and has never correctly repaired it”

Anonymous, NJ (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit 3.0-L V6 diesel)

“Sensor was indicating front crash warning, constantly. Biggest problem was that dealer claimed it was from an accident. Car has not been in an accident”

Anonymous, NJ (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 3.6-L V6)

“Auto wiper sensor not functioning”

Anonymous, ID (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit 3.0-L V6 diesel)

“Front sensor gave erroneous warnings when passing under bridges, etc. Side sensors stopped working and module had to be replaced”

Parker M., CO (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 3.6-L V6)

“The front-collision avoidance system (radar?) malfunctioned and flashed a warning message telling me to brake; but there were no vehicles in proximity to my car. Additionally, several indicators (fuel, air suspension, etc.) gave erroneous indications”

Kenneth M., NY (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 3.6-L V6)

“Problems with Adaptive Cruise Control not looking properly down center of road. Causes vehicle to abruptly slow when a car to the left in another lane slows for a turn or stop.Dealer still working on it”

Anonymous, NV (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 3.0-L V6 diesel)

“Blind spot monitoring radar failed and had to be replaced”

Veilleux F., ON (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 3.6-L V6)

“Fuzzy image”

Joseph S., IL (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit 6.4-L V8)

“The backup camera became very 'jittery' after the first couple of software updates. It reached a point where the camera was not very helpful when backing up. Jeep claimed it was the auto-focus feature on the camera”

Anonymous, GA (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 3.6-L V6)

“Sensors would go off indicating a vehicle but none were present”

Robert O., SC (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 5.7-L V8)

“The image from the backup camera sometimes shows up as static or a blank blue screen. It does this fairly often and has done it since the car was brand new. I have repeatedly mentioned it to the dealer when taking the car in for service and they even replaced the camera once. But the problem still continues”

Steven B., NY (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 3.6-L V6)

“Screen goes dark on occasion when backing up; especially when leaving garage into daylight”

Anonymous, PA (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 3.6-L V6)

“Screen dimming is obviously reacting to the headlights coming on - even in bright daylight. When it rains, the automatic wipers react to the rain, the headlights react to the wipers, and the screen reacts to the headlights, and the screen dims”

Glen M., MO (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 3.6-L V6)

“Screen freezes intermittently. Dealer tried fixing it 3 times and then ended up replacing the entire system”

Anonymous, CA (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 3.6-L V6)

“Chronic freezing of screen and control of various functions is lost until vehicle is shut off and re-started”

Anonymous, MA (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 3.6-L V6)

“The screen freezes up. it has been that way for 21 months. The dealer finely put in a new system at no cost to us. In April of 2015. All works well now”

Anonymous, CA (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 3.6-L V6)

“Screen freezes making nav, radio, etc. unUSble”

Anonymous, CO (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 3.6-L V6)

“This problem occurs multiple times per month, causing difficulty controlling climate, inability to listen to or change radio or medial input, inability to access navigation, etc”

Anonymous, TX (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 6.4-L V8)

“uConnect system crashes and Jeep refuses to replace it”

Anonymous, AZ (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 5.7-L V8)

“Screen freezes up and/or goes blank. When this happens controls do not work for the system. Bluetooth calls are dropped often. Sound goes out on the radio often. This Jeep has been a disappointment, not only because of the constant issues with th”

Anonymous, OH (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 3.6-L V6)

“The display screen distracts from driving. The screen has many steps just to change the radio station. Sometimes it would freeze preventing changing stations. I would have to shut the car off to fix”

Anonymous, CO (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 3.6-L V6)

“Several times the radio system has lost the service and I have to shut the engine down and reboot the system”

Anonymous, NM (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 5.7-L V8)

“Systems either freezes or reboots while driving. Seems to happen randomly either while using paired phone or not. Worse in cold weather. After many trips unit was replaced”

Jeffrey T., MI (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 3.6-L V6)

“Speedometer froze or did not display. The ABS computer was replaced which solved the problem”

Anonymous, IL (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 5.7-L V8)

“There has been three occasions were the radio buttons freeze and stations cannot be changed using the connect screen. Other times the presets were erased”

Anonymous, IL (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 5.7-L V8)

“System freezes when using navigation”

Michael P., MA (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit 3.6-L V6)

“It's more that the electronic system will occasionally reboot itself - meaning the paired phone, satellite radio, navigation system will all be rebooted”

Melissa L., AL (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 3.6-L V6)

“See Uconnect 8.4N. The whole system, including screen freezes up”

Terry M., TX (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

“Intermittent initial load failure of the UConnect system during ignition cycles. Sometimes unit will load but is unresponsive to touch control thereby relegating any radio, climate control, seat heat/cool or Nav features inoperable. New replacement radio unit was ordered”

David M., PA (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT 6.4-L V8)

“display screen would not respond to touch with sound system occasionally”

Anonymous, PA (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 3.6-L V6)

“The screen freezes and none of the controls related to the screen work, such as radio, navigation, etc. The only way to solve this is to turn off the car, wait over two minutes and turn the car back on. I've explained this to the dealership service department and all they do is "reprogram" the computer which doesn['t solve the problem”

Anonymous, WI (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 3.6-L V6)

Anonymous, NV (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 3.6-L V6)

“all of a sudden the screen has nothing then a few seconds later its fine,a dealer down load was or is the problem and they are working for a better fix”

Stephen G., MA (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 5.7-L V8)

“Touchscreen would become slow to respond (worse in cold weather?) Occasional reboot where it would go blank and eventually return. Both problems appear to have been fixed from software updates”

Anonymous, NJ (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 3.6-L V6)

“It's more than the display screen goes blank, the entire dash goes blank, the transmission freezes in gear, air bags go offline, auto steering disengages. total electrical failure and they cant fix”

Anonymous, NJ (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 3.6-L V6)

“The system frequently shuts off and has to reboot. Sometimes it freezes and won't unfreeze until the ignition is turn off. Have to wait a minute or two before starting up again to fix problem. Had it into dealer three times but problem hasn't been”

Anonymous, WI (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 3.6-L V6)
