Judged on appearance and presence alone, there is plenty to like about the Jeep Renegade. This modern design features striking styling, a substantial, solid feel and a respectable amount of rear cargo space for its diminutive size. It also offers a nine-speed automatic transmission and a ton of upscale options, including up-to-date crash-avoidance technology.

However, it doesn't take long for the Renegade's charms to wear thin. For starters, handling proves cumbersome, the ride is choppy, front seats are uncomfortable and the view out is restricted. What's more, that fancy nine-speed automatic doesn't quite have its gear-juggling act together. It's reluctant to downshift, leaving the 180-hp four-cylinder engine feeling underpowered and sounding raspy. At idle the TigerShark engine quivers more like a spawning grunion, sending its vibrations through the steering wheel and into the seats.

Paula D., MN (2015 Jeep Renegade Latitude 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Radio

"After moving in reverse and activating back up camera, moved shifter to drive and back up camera remained on and radio was locked up, including all radio controls"

Anonymous, MI (2015 Jeep Renegade Latitude 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Steering wheel controls

"While driving, the steering wheel became hard to turn, so I stopped. Once I shut off the car, the key wouldn't go back into the ignition. It had to be towed on by a flatbed truck because the steering wheel and tires were locked up and wouldn't move."

Anonymous, TX (2015 Jeep Renegade Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Voice control commands

"The phone is horrible. people I talk to over the car phone complain its hard to hear me, too much road noise. When I ask the system to call ______ , even though I speak clearly, 8 out of 10 times, it doesn't get it right."

Nancy B., CA (2015 Jeep Renegade)

Electric System

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure.

What Owners Say

Exterior lights (other than headlights)

"Reminder that chimes to remind the driver that a turn-signal has been on for an extended distance does not work"

Marge Z., IL (2015 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Interior lights

"Dom light stopped working front left.. Dealer replaced N.C"

Anonymous, NY (2015 Jeep Renegade Latitude 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Keyless entry

"due to computer errors the doors either did not lock or unlock as designed"

Anonymous, NJ (2015 Jeep Renegade Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Tire pressure monitor

"multiple errors coming from the computer system required 13 updates in one visit, fortunately covered by warranty"

Anonymous, NJ (2015 Jeep Renegade Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Wiper motor or washer

"actually wasn't the wiper motor. it was the rear wiper blade. I had to purchase an entire wiper arm to replace the wiper blade."

John K., PA (2015 Jeep Renegade Latitude 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

Engine Cooling

Radiator, cooling fan, antifreeze leaks, water pump, thermostat, overheating.

What Owners Say

Cooling fan

"It started to make a clicking when running and eventually stopped working causing the engine to overheat"

Anonymous, MD (2015 Jeep Renegade Latitude 1.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"radiator cooling fan died. should have no big deal. But... there was a nationwide shortage of this fax and I had to wait three weeks for one to be delivered. three weeks came and went with no fan. the service manager finally took one out of their loaner jeep to repair mine. If it was that big of an issue, they should have issued a recall."

Nick E., CA (2015 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"cooling fan slowly degraded and then the magic smoke came out, drove car to dealer, they installed a fan with fresh smoke, works good now"

Tracy L., FL (2015 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

Drive System

Driveshaft or axle, CV joint, differential, transfer case, 4WD/AWD components, driveline vibration, traction control, electronic stability control (ESC), electrical failure.

What Owners Say

4WD/AWD components

"AWD light can on, requiring replacement of the drive control module"

Anonymous, OR (2015 Jeep Renegade Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Electrical failure

"The majority of the issues stemmed from electronic failures. The dealer told me the battery was the root cause of electronic parking brake failure. Key fob didn't lock the car when horn indicated the button had been pressed and registered. My Jeep was subsequently broken into before I realized it wasn't actually locking my car. It's an awful jeep, but I'll be trading it in soon, and I won't be buying a Jeep again. The car didn't start but battery test at dealership came back OK. I needed a jump start three times before they replaced the battery to resolve that issue."

Anonymous, TN (2015 Jeep Renegade Latitude 1.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Parking brake

"The parking brake controls are located less than an inch away from the cup holder. Any moisture the drips onto the parking brake shorts it out and it cannot be restarted until the electronic board on the emergency brake has been replaced. To get it to the dealership it must be towed by a flatbed truck, as the wheels are completley locked up."

Anonymous, TX (2015 Jeep Renegade Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Rotors

"seems to be a bulletin about the rotors but dealer didn't do anything"

John K., PA (2015 Jeep Renegade Latitude 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Rough shifting

"when shifting between 1st & 2nd, it "slams" into second so hard the vehicle lurches forward; after driving for about 30 minutes (on country back roads, the transmission intermittently fails to engage after a stop upon initial acceleration"

Anonymous, MN (2015 Jeep Renegade Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Transmission computer

"the hard shift between gears began after a year, and was reduced after dealer applied a "software upgrade", but not entirely alleviated"

Anonymous, MN (2015 Jeep Renegade Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

What Owners Say

Loose exterior trim or moldings

"My rear driver side window rolled up past the seal and modeling causing damage. Had it replaced under warranty but the issue wasn't resolved. When I rolled the windows down and up it broke in the same manner as before. I haven't brought it back for repair again but it's frivolous with this dealerships. They do half ass work, and I was given my Jeep back with an empty tank. Thanks, Bob Frensley Dealership in Madison TN."

Anonymous, TN (2015 Jeep Renegade Latitude 1.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Power Equipment

Cruise control, clock, warning lights, body control module, keyless entry, wiper motor or washer, tire pressure monitor, interior or exterior lights, horn, gauges, 12V power plug, remote engine start, alarm or security system

What Owners Say

Battery cables

"they were not properly attached from the factory and we had several no start/batter problems until they replaced the cables"

Ed J., FL (2015 Jeep Renegade Latitude 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt.

What Owners Say

Turbo or supercharger

"This engine is multi-air (not turbo), some electronic part of it "bricked", the engine would only sputter and black smoke emitted from the tailpipe. Jeep dealer picked up for free, gave me a rental and fixed the problem within 2 weeks"

Anonymous, MA (2015 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

Heater system

"The 'check engine' light came on, so the operating system automatically wouldn't allow me to use the 4-wheel drive. I had to bring it in for service, and it was something to do with the thermostat. Unfortunately, they were unable to procure the necessary part to complete the repair for at least two weeks, so they shut down the thermostat issue until the part arrived and they could make the repair. Apparently this has been a recurring problem, which is why the part was in short supply"

Paula D., MN (2015 Jeep Renegade Latitude 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, clutch replacement.

What Owners Say

Clutch replacement

"I have been driving manual transmission cars since 1978 and never had a clutch wear out in less the 120,000 miles. I saw the damaged parts, the clutch was worn to the rivets and the pressure plate was heat checked. I believe the clutch is undersized for the power of the 1.4 liter turbocharged engine. Jeep told me that is wasn't covered because I had obviously been riding the clutch. What I had done was take a few long high trips with passengers and luggage and I used 6th gear at highway speeds. The engine never complained, however I notice the clutch begin to noticeably slip at about 14,000 miles. by 17,000 it would no longer move at highway speeds. I no longer use 6th gear and I avoid long trips with a car full of people."

John D., NJ (2015 Jeep Renegade Sport 1.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
