Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. Judged on appearance and presence alone, there is plenty to like about the Jeep Renegade. This modern design features striking styling; a substantial, solid feel; and a respectable amount of rear cargo space for its diminutive size. It also offers a nine-speed automatic transmission and a ton of upscale options, including up-to-date crash-avoidance technology.

It doesn't take long, though, for the Renegade's charms to wear thin. For starters, handling proves cumbersome, the ride is choppy, front seats are uncomfortable, and the view out is restricted. What's more, that fancy nine-speed automatic doesn't quite have its gear-juggling act together. It's reluctant to downshift, leaving the 180-hp four-cylinder engine feeling underpowered and sounding raspy. At idle the TigerShark engine quivers more like a spawning grunion, sending its vibrations through the steering wheel and into the seats.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2016 Jeep Renegade owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Rough shifting

"The rough shifting occurs without warning, both when accelerating and decelerating - no consistency. At times it is barley noticeable, other it is quite noticeable."

John R., PA (2016 Jeep Renegade Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Automatic transmission occasionally revs high especially downhill."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Jeep Renegade)
Slipping transmission

"While climbing a grade at highway speeds the transmission will slip and then shift to a lower gear."

Chad G., NC (2016 Jeep Renegade Latitude 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Transmission computer

"The computer shifts the transmission into a high gear while driving in stop and go traffic. When this happens the car will stall. No warning lights are exhibited so Jeep says there is nothing they can do. When it does go back into gear after a stall the vehicle will then lurch forward even with your foot firmly on the brake pedal."

Chad G., NC (2016 Jeep Renegade Latitude 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Check engine light during routine maintenance...fixed by dealership"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Jeep Renegade)
Transmission leaks

"The leak is being checked out now- don't know the cause yet."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"Passenger window noise"

Anonymous, OH (2016 Jeep Renegade)
Squeaks or rattles

"Too early in life of vehicle to have this many rattles"

Anonymous, PA (2016 Jeep Renegade Latitude 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Wind noise

"when driving in windy condicions the passenger door has a wind leak"

Anonymous, VA (2016 Jeep Renegade Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Both front passenger windows sometimes have wind noise depending on the weather conditions. It is mostly the drivers side window... Still not a deal breaker, I love my Jeep!"

Steven S., MI (2016 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Front passenger window, weather stripping whistles at highway speed"

Anonymous, MA (2016 Jeep Renegade Latitude 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

Electric System

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure.

What Owners Say

Exterior lights (other than headlights)

"Blown fuse which displayed on dashboard as a major electrical failure"

Edward W., NJ (2016 Jeep Renegade Latitude 1.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Tire pressure monitor

"It goes crazy in cold weather. It is normal for the pressure to drop and after driving for awhile it is back to normal. I was advised to not inflate until the monitor shut off as that would not be good. There is no way to shut it off in cold weather (that I'm aware of). Very annoying."

John R., PA (2016 Jeep Renegade Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Warning lights

"The seat belt sensor started dinging at me to put my seat belt on. My seat belt WAS on. The dealership ended up replacing the seat belt latch where the sensor was located. Also, There have been a few times where a wrning light for something like the airbag or the braking system, etc would just suddenly come on, and then go off again with no other effects. It doesn't happen often, just every once in a while."

Conni F., NC (2016 Jeep Renegade Sport 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Check engine thermos sensor"

Josephine M., NY (2016 Jeep Renegade Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

What Owners Say

Display screen freezes up

"Behavioral issues with the info / entertainment system required replacement under warranty."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Jeep Renegade Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Display screen goes blank

"As delivered, the display screen would go blank and/or not display anything upon startup. This was one of many software issues with the car when it was delivered"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Radio

"Sirius satellite radio, loses station presets often , have to call tech support to reprogram"

Anonymous, NY (2016 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

What Owners Say

Fuel pump

"Initial problems off engine stalling started in January 2018. After about 5 or 6 stall outs we took it to the dealership where we bought it. They had it for 3 days & said they could not find anything wrong with it! They returned the car to us and we did not have any problems for about 3 months. Then it started again, stalling out in traffic and on the 2 lane road that gets us to our home, which is located in the mountains at about 6,300 ft. this is very dangerous because the roads have very many curves. Stalling out around a curve is bad because there is no way for a vehicle of any size to know that there is a vehicle stalled around the next curve. We got very lucky in that, first thing is that my wife was not driving when any of these stalls happened. And when I was driving the times that it did happen I was lucky enough to be far enough around the curve that I could get far enough over to the side of the road so that traffic could just get by without hitting me. This went on all the way to January 2019!! I got fed up with this so I went online to see if anybody else was having this problem. Well guess what ?? There was a FACTORY RECALL made in DECEMBER of 2018 which I was never notified of. I called the dealer right away. We took the car to the dealer the next day. They said that the Chrysler Factory could not supply a replacement Fuel Pump until APRIL 5TH!!! near the end of APRIL THAT DELIVERY DATE WAS CHANGED TO APRIL 19th.The fuel pump was finally to be delivered to the dealer the 1st week of MAY . We got our car back on the 7th of May..YEHHH. The one good thing about this BIG PROBLEM is that Chrysler paid for a loaner car from Enterprise Rental Car. After all this I received in the mail a Notice from FIAT CHRYSLER AUTOMOBILES that their was a RECALL ON OUR CAR FOR A FUEL PUMP PROBLEM. Better late than never"

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

What Owners Say

Loose interior trim or moldings

"I really just feel like the Renegade has an overall very CHEAP quality feel to it. It doesn't feel well made, everything inside seems to be cheap plastic, and once or twice I have had to pop a trim piece back into place."

Conni F., NC (2016 Jeep Renegade Sport 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks.

What Owners Say

Engine computer

"The Oxygen sensor was bad. I was sitting at a traffic light, when I started up, the engine redlined and stalled out, with the dash info saying "Check Engine Acceleration Control". I drifted to the side of the road, turned the engine off and then back on again and was able to drive straight to the dealership where they fixed something involving the oxygen sensor. Not sure if the sensor was replaced, or just reset somehow"

Conni F., NC (2016 Jeep Renegade Sport 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

Engine Cooling

Radiator, cooling fan, antifreeze leaks, water pump, thermostat, overheating.

What Owners Say

Cooling fan

"The fan came loose. It took three weeks to get a part and repair. I have never had this type of problem with a car in 50 years other than my 1960s Fiat. If I had know the engine was a Fiat I would not have purchased the vehicle"
