The Kia Optima stands out among typical humdrum midsized sedans with a well-tailored coupe-like silhouette. It also comes with a generous helping of standard equipment for the price. But look past these initial draws and the Optima proves quite ordinary. Neither noise isolation nor ride comfort are stellar. This iteration of the Optima remained a good choice, but was showing its age relative to the newer-designed competition.

"This engine faliure was not in last 12 months. Engine was replaced by warranty and was not a great inconvience."

Anonymous, RI (2013 Kia Optima SX 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"It has always had intermittent sputtering since our purchase in 2015. I had taken it in to the Kia dealership repeatedly over the years for diagnosis, but it did not present itself to the mechanics, so we continued to chase it. It had a severe loss of power on my way to work one morning, and I limped to the dealership. The problem ended up being an engine recall issue due to the code that it showed. Luckily, the diagnoses occurred just weeks before our extended warranty was up. The engine was replaced late 2019 at no cost to us."

Anonymous, WA (2013 Kia Optima EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

What Owners Say

Jordan G., KS (2013 Kia Optima LX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Cobblestone ice resulting from road icing during winter of 2013 caused wheel alignment problems"

Anonymous, TX (2013 Kia Optima LX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

Bart H., PA (2013 Kia Optima LX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Power steering pumps and hoses

"I originally went in for an oil change and the dealer informed me there was a recall on the steering system. Hours later, the tech was having problems with the repair and then told us our power steering pump had failed. The pump is connected to the recalled part he was trying to fix. Long story short, they told us we would have to buy a new pump. We contested this through Kia corporate, and months later, they agreed to reimburse us for the cost of the pump."

Anonymous, WA (2013 Kia Optima SX 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Shocks or struts

"had to replace rear shock, left side leaking, did both replacment"

Patrick G., CT (2013 Kia Optima LX 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Strut had to be ordered and two weeks later strut came in. returned to dealer for strut replacement and they told me I would have to pay for emission inspection again. I refused to pay and they dropped. Sounded like a scam to me."

Anonymous, PA (2013 Kia Optima SX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Steering linkage (includes rack and pinion)

"The steering wheel produced a clicking noise as it was being turned. It sounded and felt like the steering wheel could come off!"

Anonymous, FL (2013 Kia Optima 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"small gap when reversing when direction"

Anonymous, CA (2013 Kia Optima SX 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"I can't remember when the problem started, but one day out of the blue, the steering wheel started making a clicking noise and was not as precise and did not steer left or right without making this noise. It was very annoying and scary. I wanted to get it fixed as fast as I could, thinking that my life or my wife's life would be in danger. I took it to a Goodyear garage center close to where we lived. They said I would need to take it to the dealer. I did so. When I inquired about it at the Kia dealership in town, the service manager assured me it was not a life threatening circumstance. I was not in a position to leave the car and they couldn't fix it that day; so I took it to an independent mechanic later who fixed it. It has given us no trouble since, but I must re-emphasize that this was a very scary experience!"

Anonymous, FL (2013 Kia Optima Unsure 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Electronic steering has hitch in it"

James S., OK (2013 Kia Optima Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Anonymous, NC (2013 Kia Optima EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Steering wheel vibration

"I heard a grinding noise and expereinced vibration when traveling over 45 mph and when stopping. There was a recall regarding the streering system. I did not have to pay but it would have been a $400 repair. The repair occured about 10 months ago."

Anonymous, (2013 Kia Optima SX 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Greg K., OH (2013 Kia Optima Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Paint cracking"

Anonymous, TN (2013 Kia Optima LX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Rust

"Hood has 3 paint chips all rusting past couple of years. One is about 1.5 times larger than pencil eraser diameter and rusted through (paint around it loose and should soon chip more). Considered fixing but not worth loosing 2 to 4 days of use and spending $500 to $1,000 IF I could find a reputable body shop as dealer does not offer service. They said on the bright side as it's the hood it won't go to other areas. Ironically the rest of the cars paint looks great and the hood has been more chip resistant than my Pruis etc."

Anonymous, WA (2013 Kia Optima)

"Just above the front windscreen I found 4 - 5 rust spots. I advise the Kia dealership. My car was kept for 3-days and the roof repainted. All underwarenty and at no cost to me"

Anonymous, WA (2013 Kia Optima LX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

Heather S., CO (2013 Kia Optima EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Remote engine starter

"Battery apparently had been replaced prior to my purchase and the fuse apparently had not been reinstalled correctly. The vehicle wouldn't start at all and then flashed and would not allow the vehicle to be shut off completely until the battery died. Required being towed 30 miles to the closest dealer. Kia did pay for towing and the repair even though they said it wasn't a warranty item"

Anonymous, MO (2013 Kia Optima Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"In the winter we discovered that all of a sudden oil was significantly leaking after driving. I tested the level and it was down to almost zero. I called Kia, they advised that it might be a recall that was never serviced for the oil feed line and to get some oil to fill it and bring it in. I put about 3.5L in (it was that low) and took it in the next day. They said oil was everywhere around the engine and it was a recall issue. They replaced the faulty line, did a full oil chainge and cleaned up as well as they could. All no charge and no problems since."

We had to replace one battery because it wouldn't recharge, and I've had to call AAA once to jump the Optima because it wouldn't start at all since I had the battery replaced in January.
