Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

"Since i drive on the highway a lot i need to be able to use the hands free more and more... for about since about November i have not been able to get the pairing to occur which is about the same time as i noticed that the remote start and the AM radio would not work. The original KAI dealership that i purchased from is not always helpful and the dealership that i prefer is totally out of the way. So until i really feel like a battle i will just suck it up."

Tracy R., PA (2010 Kia Soul)
Radio

"AM radio channels stopped working. Internet says Kia radios lose connection with antenna/antenna bad. Went to dealer some months ago, who wanted to sell a new radio unit. Not sure this is the issue, and they were inflexible. On the other issue, oil leak, they took my 2K and it still leaks, so I'm not confident they can fix the radio."

Since about November it seems that everything went kaput at the same time. the Bluetooth pairing ans well as the remote start. It would not have gone on this long if the original KIA dealership was nicer to deal with or the nicer dealership was closer."

Anonymous, MO (2010 Kia Soul Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Shortly after 3 years 36000 miles paint on roof started to crack, fade and peel which continues to get worse. Contacted Kia customer service and their rep blamed it on scratches making it sound like my fault"

Anonymous, CT (2010 Kia Soul Plus 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"2010 KIA paint is horribly thin. Anything that hits the car chips the clear coat and paint down to the undercoat and sometimes even the metal. This started within the first month of owning the NEW car. Dealership offered a paint pen. Never was able to get the car repainted or properly fixed, KIA denies an issue that is widespread...check any Kia Soul forum."

B W., PA (2010 Kia Soul Exclaim 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Clutch adjustment

"Heavy pedal pressure required, and normal operating of the clutch resulted in my toes hitting the pedal shaft. No problems found in the hydraulics or pedal adjustment. Place wooden block under pedal to reduce the travel. Looks like bad design of pedal position."

Bill C., ON (2010 Kia Soul 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Rough shifting

"The car began shifting roughly and demonstrating a decrease in gas milage in early 2018. The car was taken to a local Kia dealer, who advised us that the issue was that it needed a software update. The update was installed, but the issue persists."

Tyler G., TN (2010 Kia Soul Exclaim 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Just after purchasing and taking ownership of vehicle, experienced the shifter popping out of fifth gear unexpectedly and repeatedly. After some delay, problem was the shifter bushings where cables meet the transmission were corroded and seized. Kia"

Anonymous, QC (2010 Kia Soul 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Bulletin on the shifter for the base model for a plastic skirt, TSB #TSB-029. Dealer never did fix it, couldn't duplicate the problem. Typical dealer nonsense. I used to be a dealer tech, I know the score. ;-)"

Dave S., NB (2010 Kia Soul Base 1.6-L 4 Cyl)
Transmission leaks

"transmission line rusted"

Anonymous, NS (2010 Kia Soul 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"the parking lights seem to be flickering on and off"

Martin R., FL (2010 Kia Soul)
Headlights

"The headlights used to turn off when they were in the "on" position and the key was removed from the ignition. Now, they remain on and will drain the battery if left in the "on" position. The dealer was notified of this and informed me that the lights should not have turned off automatically to begin with. I have desired to get a second opinion on this problem from the other Kia dealer in town, but have not had the time to do so"

Tyler G., NM (2010 Kia Soul Exclaim 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Have replaced the headlights 3 times in the past year"

Ed M., KY (2010 Kia Soul 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"Bulbs burned out and needed to be replaced"

Anonymous, VA (2010 Kia Soul)
Heated or cooled seats

"The heater on the driver's seat was way too hot to use. Then I received a recall notice for that very same issue. I had it repaired for free at a dealer, but the problem persists. I will have to return to the dealer when I have time to have them check it again."

George C., QC (2010 Kia Soul Base 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

What Owners Say

Ball joints

"When the struts went out, the passenger front ball joint needed replacing. The aftermarket selection was dismal. Not many people make parts for the Soul"

John R., MI (2010 Kia Soul Exclaim 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Shocks or struts

"There was a rattling from the driver's front for months. We finally got sick of it."

John R., MI (2010 Kia Soul Exclaim 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"the top of the shock broke"

Wesley P., TX (2010 Kia Soul Base 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Springs or torsion bars

"About six months ago the Driver's side front spring snapped while driving. The car did not hit anything at the time. Two weeks ago the passenger's side front spring also snapped. Again, no accident/pothole/etc - it just snapped. In both cases the replacement springs were not available. In the first case a spring became available in 2-3 days. In the second case the spring has been on national back order (no part available in the U.S.) for over a week now. Dealer has given us a loaner for the time being. I've never had the springs snap like that in any car I've ever owned. Best I can tell it was due to metal fatigue. In both cases the broken segment of the spring was jagged - we were lucky it didn't puncture the tires while we were driving it. Given the scarcity of replacement springs I suspect there may be a high demand for these. Perhaps this is a design issue?"

Kenneth G., MA (2010 Kia Soul Exclaim 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Steering linkage (includes rack and pinion)

"The car is used a lot, but the linkage has been repaired several times within the laxt 2 or 3 years....... mind you, the roads around where I live are pretty bad"

"It stopped working after about 175000 miles on the vehicle"

Mark T., FL (2010 Kia Soul Plus 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Heater system

"Defective heater core Defective thermostat"

Steven S., QC (2010 Kia Soul Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, leaks.

What Owners Say

Exhaust leaks

"The exaust leak started as a low rumble at around 3000 rpm, 60 mph, after hearing the rumble getting louder, I had a number of mechanics undable to identify the noise. Most claimed it was just road noise. I replaced my tires, no change. Finally my usual mechanic suspected a starting leak somewhere in flex pipe. The leak is concealed under a mesh. Going to wait until it is real obvious where leak is and fix with a weld."

Anonymous, WI (2010 Kia Soul Plus 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Pipes

"Started about a month ago, resolved yesterday"

Anonymous, (2010 Kia Soul Base 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

What Owners Say

Accessory belts or pulleys

"Dealer reported a cracked belt on AC"

Anonymous, CA (2010 Kia Soul Plus 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Oil leaks

"Car started dropping oil on cement driveway. Dealer kept it for a few days, said they put i some stop-leak, and said it was fixed. It still leaked. Dealer changed oil pan gasket, said it was fixed. Still oil drops under engine. Dealer assures it is oil, not trans fluid or coolant. THen dealer said there was a microscopic crack in the oil pan, changed pan and gasket. Still leaking. So far, spent 2K and no fix. Took to a private repair shop. Put sealant into oil. Still leaks. Park the car in the street now to keep the driveway clean. Have tired of trying to get this fixed."
