Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. Road Test

The tall and boxy Soul packs a lot of useful space into a modest footprint. While clearly aimed at the youth market, easy access makes it a viable choice for anyone who has trouble getting in and out of a car. The rear seat is roomy and handling is secure, but the ride is stiff and noise is apparent. The 2012 update brought a horsepower boost and a new six-speed automatic transmission, which made the Soul quicker and more thrifty, averaging 26 mpg in our tests. Braking distances are long, especially for a small car.

"Sometimes not able to get the car into gear from park, without using a screwdriver tool. This seemed to happen mostly in cold weather. This was a known problem addressed with instructions in the owners manual. The dealership later offered a free fix by replacing a part or all of affected parts, but the problem has continued"

What Owners Say

Electrical failure

"Electric failure seems to be the relay switch to the AC blower motor (and or the motor itself) this is a known problem and should probably be subject to a recall as the part is reasonable, but due to location labor is over $750. I have smelled burning/melting plastic and hope it is not a fire hazard too!"

Engine Cooling

Radiator, cooling fan, antifreeze leaks, water pump, thermostat, overheating.
