No question, there is a need out there for a plusher Toyota Prius, combining fuel economy and versatility with added luxury. The Lexus CT 200h tries to take the mantle, but leaves a lot to be desired and ultimately, doesn't really live up to expectations.
The good news: It gets an impressive 40 mpg overall. But if you expect a Lexus experience in a small package, chances are you'll be disappointed. With a stiff ride, a noisy and extremely tight cabin, this stylish, green hatchback can be taxing. Sporty looks create a pretense, but ultimately the handling and slow acceleration don't match the image. Stiff suspension and small dimensions make it capable enough and secure when pushed, but that's not enough to make the CT fun to drive.
Other frustrations stem from limited rear visibility, a very cramped rear seat and a frustrating control system with a fussy mouselike controller.
If good fuel economy and the Lexus badge are all you're after, the CT might satisfy, but our owner satisfaction survey suggests current owners wouldn't buy another one.
Navigating the trim lines
Choices are simple with either the regular CT 200h or the F Sport version with its sport-tuned suspension and various cosmetic bits, including a big spoiler and a black roof to make the CT look more speed-racerish.
Best version\/options to get
Stick with the regular CT 200h. The optional backup camera is an essential. We'd also add the Premium package (heated seats, power passenger seat, HomeLink garage door capability, rain-sensing wipers). Adding navigation or real leather seats forces you to get the Display Audio system, which uses an annoying mouselike controller. The regular stereo controls are simpler to use.
Changes from the previous version
The CT 200h was a new model for 2011. An update for 2014 introduced new front end styling, moving to the brand's corporate "spindle" grille and the next-generation audio system. New for 2016 was the availability of Lexus' Enform Remote app, which is supported for unlock/lock, remote start and trace functions along with the usual tracking service. One clever feature: You can get an alert sent to your smartphone if vehicle exceeds a preset speed or mileage limit -- handy if you lend your car out or have a teenage driver.
