CR's Take
Competing at the high end of the SUV market, a position once held exclusively by Land Rover, this capable luxury-priced SUV is based on the big, imposing Toyota Land CruiserÑitself hardly plebeian with its slick powertrain, comfortable ride, quiet cabin, and $50,000 sticker. The Lexus is just a little bit cushier. The LX470 has a height-adjustable suspension (which the Land Cruiser lacks), a fancier interior, andÑnew for 2000Ñan electronic stability-control system. Like the Land Cruiser, its 4.7-liter, 230-hp V8 is strong, smooth, and quiet. Full-time four-wheel drive ensures good all-weather traction. Cargo space is generous, and the folding third seat is handy.
