CR's Take

This luxury SUV is based on the Toyota Land Cruiser, itself quite plush and upscale. Power comes from a strong 5.7-liter V8 also found in the Tundra pickup. It has a comfortable ride and a quiet, plush, and well-assembled cabin. Handling is lackluster but ultimately secure. The Land Cruiser we tested got only 14 mpg overall but was very capable off-road. Like the Toyota, the LX has an off-road crawl mode that manages throttle and braking over tough terrain. The height-adjustable suspension further enables the LX to traverse off-road. But the power-folding third-row seat folds up to the sides, limiting cargo space. The Lexus Safety System+, which includes automatic emergency braking and lane-departure warning, is standard.

Current Generation

The redesigned 2022 Lexus LX 600 wraps the next-generation Toyota Land Cruiser in an upscale package, with a powerful turbocharged V6 engine, safari-ready off-road capability, and enough luxury amenities to make a debutante blush. It is powered by a 409-horsepower, 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 engine matched to a 10-speed automatic transmission. It is still a traditional body-on-frame design with a solid rear axle. The height-adjustable suspension can lower the vehicle for easier access or raise it for off-road obstacles. Standard safety features include FCW, AEB, LKA, LDW, and ACC, among others. For 2025, a 457-hp 700h hybrid is new.

Lexus uses a rebadged, more upscale Toyota Land Cruiser for its top-trim SUV. Dubbed the LX, it is one of the few SUVs that manages to be both capable off-road and civilized on pavement. It has a slick powertrain, a comfortable ride, and a quiet, nicely appointed cabin. Added features over the Land Cruiser include a height-adjustable air suspension and a power-adjustable steering wheel. Five adults can fit quite comfortably and cargo space is generous. The 2008 redesign brought a 5.7-liter V8 engine and a power folding third-row seat, which unfortunately consumes cargo room. Our tested Land Cruiser only got 14 mpg overall, but was impressive off road. The crawl mode manages throttle and braking over tough terrain. A five-passenger version is new for 2018.
