A new engine makes Lexus's five-passenger luxury SUV a lively performer. The RX is opulent and practical, with well-designed interior details. But handling isn't agile and no third-row seat is available. On the other hand, the driving experience is calm and tranquil, like a luxury car.

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for about 329,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2020 vehicles are holding up in 17 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical system. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2007 Lexus RX owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

Alignment

"The dealership replaced the steering linkage and then did an alignment. The car kept pulling to one side. They kept telling me it was not doing that. I finally went on a test drive with a manager and he admitted that it was pulling. They had the car for about a month. I got it back and it still pulled to one side. They finally adjusted the camber and that fixed the problem, something that should have been done weeks before"

Carolyn V., SC (2007 Lexus RX 350 3.5-L V6)
Power steering pumps and hoses

"The steering pump was leaking and the Dealer wanted $2700 to repair it along with hoses fluid etc. I found a pump on the internet and a local mechanic to replace it for around $600. BTW, the front brakes needed replacing. I went to Lexus, paid $95"

George C., TN (2007 Lexus RX 350 3.5-L V6)

"power steering started working intermittently. Shop fixed it by replacing pump and linkages, etc. $2,400 with tax. OUCH !"

Shocks or struts

"It seemed premature for both shocks and both struts to be worn out at 112,000 miles."

Anonymous, CA (2007 Lexus RX 350.0 3.5-L V6)

"The shock absorbing part of the struts wore out, so the ride got a bit rough and my wife complained of squeaking and bouncing when she stopped. This was not surprising, given the age and mileage of the car. I think the original parts gave good service. I replaced all four struts myself with aftermarket units I ordered from Rockauto for about $100 each (surprisingly cheap). Problem solved, wife happy with the smooth, quiet ride."

Reid M., TX (2007 Lexus RX 350.0 3.5-L V6)

"The rubber boots on the rear shocks deteriorated and fell apart. Because the rear shocks are caged in the rear coil springs replacing them requires dismounting the shock towers. This is an expensive and time consuming repair. one that I wish to avoid. Luckily I am able to garage the vehicle and live in a climate where I am able to postpone this repair. This flaw in design was remedied the future RX models by relocating the rear shocks outside the coil springs. Has I waited one more year the issue would not exist for me."

Anonymous, CA (2007 Lexus RX 350.0 3.5-L V6)

"mechanic said that the strut or shock was leaking- and to get it fixed some time in the future. No urgency"

Agnes G., CA (2007 Lexus RX 350 3.5-L V6)

"I had to replace all four struts. I thought 80,000 miles was a little too soon to have to do this. The mechanic told me that this was an inherent problem with Lexus and that in fact it usually happens around 75,000 miles"

Anonymous, WI (2007 Lexus RX 350 3.5-L V6)

"The boots on the rear shocks are fully deteriorated exposing the cylinder shaft. since the shocks are enclosed in the spring of the shock tower, the repair is very expensive, requiring the removal of the entire tower and either disassembly to install a new shock or replacement of the entire shock tower assembly. This is an expensive proposition. Subsequent models of the RX350 have improved the design by placing the shock outside the spring thereby making for an easier and less expensive replac"

Richard R., CT (2007 Lexus RX 350 3.5-L V6)

"Starting around 90000 miles power steering pump and rack and pinion started slow leaks. Also front control arms failed because of poor quality rubber joint. Dealer said cost of repair was $4500. Also, all 5 tire pressure sensors failed for total replacement price of $800. Combined with the bad ignition coils the total price of repairs was $8000. Early failures cost too much for me"

Never saw one drop of any type of liquid on the garage floor or any parking spaces. Held of on repair to due excessive expected cost at a dealership. Neither drain into the backseat area. They said the cleared them charged just over $600. Next rain, water appeared again. I took it back. They checked and decided it was a crack in a weld close to were the power back door struts were attached. They wanted $1400 to take the body panel of and redo the weld. Then repaint the panel. They charged $100 to diagnose the problem. I left went home and looked at the weld. It did not seem possible. But i did look closely at the strut. I removed it and the debris between the strut mount and the the door frame. I reinstalled the strut but, I put lots of silicone under the mount and in the bolt holes. Guess what leak is gone."

I came to help and we decided that the dealer was close enough to drive to after it cooled down. They determined it was the water pump which was cheap enough but the labor was very very expensive. It was $1595 for labor and $445 for parts. Also, while testing the water pump, they found a hose leak which had to be replaced. We were without the car for 3 days, but they did provide a rental at no charge."

Radiator

"Plastic hose attachment at top of radiator deteriorated and broke off. Radiator was leaking and had to get part replaced."

"A small tube on the radiator cap broke off causing a complete loss of coolant. The part was not replaceable and a new radiator had to be installed. After installing the new radiator the dealer discovered a leaking water pump and that was replaced. Total cost was $2,500."

"Radiator started leaking and since it is made of plastic it cannot be repaired, only replaced, which is really expensive ($900) due to labor involved. Since the car has relatively low milage for its age this issue is really aggravating. No good reason that a radiator should not last at least 200K miles"
