The Mazda6 provides a sporty alternative to the conventional humdrum midsized sedan. A coupe-like silhouette stands out with eye-catching looks. You probably won't be bored driving the car, either. Quick, responsive steering contributes to agile handling.
But the 6 isn't all about flash. Fuel economy is class-leading at 32 mpg overall thanks to the automaker's SkyActiv suite of fuel-saving engine and weight-reduction technologies. That's better than many small sedans. Acceleration doesn't suffer for fuel economy, with the 6 returning slightly-above average figures.
A smooth and responsive six-speed automatic transmission and supportive front seats add to the driving pleasure. The 184-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder is the only available engine; no uplevel turbocharged-four or V6 is offered. But unlike many competitors, you can still get a six-speed manual transmission. A diesel engine was rumored but is long overdue.
Where the 6 falls a bit short is refinement and utility. While the ride is taut and well controlled, it's not as plush as you'll find in some competing cars. Despite improvements from the 2016 freshening, the 6 remains a relatively loud car. The Mazda also lacks the solid and substantial feel found in some competitors, like a Chevrolet Malibu or Ford Fusion. If interior room is a priority, the 6 may be a bit on the snug side. Some of those upright and solidly-square midsized sedans, like the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, have easier access and roomier rear seats. Also new for 2016, Mazda's corporate infotainment system requires some study, often needing several steps to conjure up simple functions.
