The C-Class may be a compact sedan but it's also a solid, agile, quiet, comfortable and credible luxury car. We tested the base C250, powered by the exceptionally smooth, 201-hp, turbocharged four-cylinder engine Mercedes introduced for 2012. It serves up ample power, but its 24 mpg is not exactly stellar.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"Good handling, looks nice, good accelerations and console layout is good."

JEFF M., MB (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"Firm ride, with nimble handling and excellent acceleration."

DREW W., VA (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"Too small. Hard to navigate electronics. Too many little problems e.g., oil leaks, fuel pump problem and expensive routine maintenance"

JOHN J., MN (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"Fun to drive. Good acceleration. The tires are a little noisy on the freeway."

Anonymous, MA (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"Great acceleration for a 4 cylinder vehicle."

Anonymous, CA (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"Powerful acceleration, great styling and comfort. great handing in winter conditions. The only thing I don't like is the automatic service alert that comes up every time I drive my car. I use a local mechanic for oil changes, etc, because the nearest Mercedes service center is a 4 hr drive from where I live. So I guess I'm stuck with this annoying daily tally in the center of my speedometer telling me that I've exceeded my scheduled service by 991 days."

Anonymous, ID (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"I really like the turbo boost...although I am not happy at all that the transmission on this vehicle went out around 35,001 miles (just after the warranty expired). Mercedes Benz never reimbursed me for the $2,000 work on the transmission."

Jimmy F., CA (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"Fantastic driving experience... as wxpected with a Mercedes Benz. Lives up to it's name."

Anonymous, UT (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"Crisp handling and small turning radius make this car a winner in urban driving and parking."

Heidi H., VA (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"This is both a luxurious and peppy car. It is a fine combination and a joy to take on trips."

Anonymous, NJ (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"In Sport mode, this car flies."

Michael T., CA (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"Until the turbo kicks in it’s a dog."

Anonymous, FL (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"Accelerates like a bigger engine, handles like a sports car."

William B., TX (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"Engine is responsive Car holds road well and takes curves quite well"

Anonymous, CA (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"Exceptional handling in wet or dry conditions, yet still has a smooth and quite ride."

Robert S., CA (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"The Mercedes-Benz is a luxurious handling car that is fun to drive. It has a "Sport" mode that really gives it a lot of pep when the driving situation calls for it."

Michael T., CA (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"The engine has a 4 cylinder with a turbo. A hesitation is noted when accelerating from a lower speed to a higher speed."

Charles H., TX (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"With 300 horsepower, the C350 is quick and punchy. The transmission is smooth shifting. Handling, with the sport suspension is very sporty.. I have driven the C250 with a four cylinder turbo and it does not come close to the C350.."

Anonymous, FL (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"great acceleration (C350) with responsive handling"

Anonymous, GA (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"Smooth shifting and adequate acceleration"

J P., IL (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"I love the way it accelrates and handles"

Alan O., CA (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"See previous comment. Great handling and breaking."

Anonymous, ID (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"Sport model. Excellent acceleration and race car handling."

Anonymous, KY (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"acceleration is excellent, extremely good when having to pass on 2-lane roads while getting 32+ mpg. Handling is as good or better than my 944 Porsche was. Part of that is better tires."

Shanley B., OH (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"Quiet, good power, good handling, comfortable"

Gregory S., CA (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"can handles very well for a 7 year old vehicle, tight and responsive"

Thomas S., PA (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"The car is very fast (almost too much so) with the 6 cylinder engine. With the sports suspension, very agressive handling is available, but with some tradeoff on ride comfort."

Anonymous, CT (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"Above average acceleration based upon engine size."

Glenn A., IL (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"The seats are very uncomfortable and the tire/wheels get bent very easily here on CA roads (potholes)"

Anonymous, CA (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"The leather quality not great. Very stiff and beginning to tear. Very rough ride over bumps and road cracks and noisy."

JEFF M., MB (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"Great seats and quiet ride, awesome car"

BRUCE M., OH (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"Incredibly comfortable, quite, spacious for not too big of a car, and tremendous trunk. Mostly, a pleasure to drive no matter how far."

ROBERT S., CA (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"The seats are not as comfortable after traveling an hour. The seats do have variable adjustments but not enough cushion comfort for hips."

Anonymous, AZ (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"The ride is stiff and bumpy and the entry too low to take our parents anywhere in this car. So as a commuter car or single person vehicle it is fine but not good for everyone."

M G., CA (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"The interior feels very nestled and sporty at the same time, especially given the electric seating controls and heated seats."

Randall P., TX (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"Our Mercedes is very comfortable for long distance driving."

Michael T., CA (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"This is by far the most comfortable and luxurious car I have ever driven. The heated seats bring fine relief to a tired or aching back. The reclining seats are also good for quick recovering from fatigue after driving a long distance."

Anonymous, NJ (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"Super comfortable seats, hugs you in all the right places. I have no issues taking this car for a long haul. Noise level is acceptable, considerably more so than the Honda Accord. No irritating noises after many years of driving. I valued the turning radius on this car immensely compared to my Honda Accord (which usually requires a 3-point turn for average sized streets). The Benz turns in a snap without backing again!"

Jimmy F., CA (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"Very comfortable and quite. Makes even long trips a pleasure."

Robert S., CA (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"comfortable seats with little road noise"

Anonymous, GA (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"Bad: there are rattles and noises in the vehicle, dealer cannot determine where they are coming from. Very annoying."

Kirill B., CA (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"Very comfortable seats. Smooth solid ride. Fine handling."

Anonymous, FL (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"It's just fun to drive."

James D., FL (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"It is a classic car that is extremely well built. After 6 years the car is still tight enough so that there are no rattles and it feels solid when you close the doors. It is heavy enough to not be subject to light crosswinds. It corners well enough, if somewhat sedately. The seats are problem free. It is relatively quiet."

Anonymous, NJ (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"Very comfortable for long trips. Recently exceeded 30 mpg on a near 500-mile trip in Idaho - two adults and luggage. The 4Matic AWD is second to none. At about 40K miles, my thermostat quit. engine light on; $600 repair. Fortunately I purchased the extended warranty."

Anonymous, ID (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"Firm seat, quiet ride."

William B., TX (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"Quiet ride smooth acceleration but a bit sluggish"

Allen J., MD (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"The ride in this car is quite rough - as if the suspension wasn’t adequate."

Anonymous, CA (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"I expected more comfortable seats -- its miserable trying to get in and out of the driver's side of this car"

WALTER P., MD (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"It is a very solid car, but the price and continual maintenance makes it very expensive in the long run."

Anonymous, CO (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"too many features cost extra."

Anonymous, MA (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"This car is very safe, drives well, fast, looks good and is worth the money I paid for it."

ESTHER J., NC (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"I paid too much for the vehicle and cannot get nearly enough to cover what I owe which is my fault and it is very expensive to run as it uses premium and any service is exorbitant."

Anonymous, AZ (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"Good styling, fuel economy not satisfied having to use premium fuel. Defeats fuel economy"

ED C., ID (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"Full featured luxury car at a competitive price; excellent warranty"

Anonymous, MA (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"Price paid for three year old "Certified" car with only 23,000 miles was $23,000."

PAUL M., VA (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)

"Although a base model, it looks classy and feels great inside and out!"

Randall P., TX (2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class)
