Long a luxury sedan benchmark, the E-Class places comfort, function and good reflexes above glitzy flash. Passengers are treated to a plush ride, comfortable and supportive seats, as well as an impeccably finished interior. Yet the driver's wants aren't neglected, with responsive handling, taut body control and ample power from the E350's 302-hp V6. This car pampers and proves it can dance as well.

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for over 300,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2021 vehicles are holding up in 17 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical system. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Display screen goes blank

"Has to be reset periodically"

Anonymous, TX (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350 BlueTec 3.5-L V6)

"The backup camera stopped working when the car was put in reverse. The dealership mechanic repaired the issue."

Richard M., FL (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350 3.5-L V6)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"It's all part of one system nothing electronic worked until the unit was replaced"

Anonymous, CA (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350 BlueTec 3.5-L V6)

"Every now and then it has to be reset"

Anonymous, TX (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350 BlueTec 3.5-L V6)
Hardware replacement

"It happened quite quickly (A couple of weeks it was working and not). The head unit had to be replaced at a cost of $7,000,"

Anonymous, CA (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350 BlueTec 3.5-L V6)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"Not connecting to phone"

Philip O., FL (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350 3.5-L V6)

"The car has a Command knob which controls features like the GPS display and radio/stereo. It is known to commonly fail because the shaft of the knob is made of a cheap plastic. The dealership charges over $1000 to replace the knob...I bought one online for $250 and replaced it in about 15 minutes by watching a YouTube video (normally, I never do car repairs!). Another alternative is to replace the plastic shaft itself with an aluminum one available online for about $25 (the part probably costs a dime to manufacture). However, this repair is more intricate, so I opted for the $250 option. I find it absurd that MERCEDES-BENZ built these devices with a cheap part made of plastic when, for literally pennies, they could have made it from aluminum. But, I guess they like charging their customers over $1000 for something so easily fixed."

Anonymous, FL (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350 BlueTec 3.5-L V6)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Stopped woking"

Philip O., FL (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350 3.5-L V6)
Radio

"Simply failed to work. Was still under used car warranty so replaced for free"

Anonymous, NY (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350 3.5-L V6)

Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks.

What Owners Say

Engine computer

"Engine ran rough and check engine light went on .MB service codes diagnosed some sort of ME module that software that they said need to be upgraded i,e, replaced at my expense ($600.).After I took back the vehicle it had a brief "relapse" within a week or so. They took it back in and ran another diagnostic (no charge this time) and told me the codes indicate I need a new fuel pump and filter. The car is running well, so I plan t get a second opinion. Also advised to have fuel injectors cleaned but I ma also going to get a second opinion about that too"

Anonymous, (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350 3.5-L V6)
Engine mounts

"Here's a vehicle that has under 30,000 miles and was drive in smooth Florida roads it's entire existence. Yet IO was told that the motor mounts need replacing. I have had vehicles with more mileage driven on harsh roads and never had the motor mounts need replacing."

Anonymous, FL (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350 3.5-L V6)

"bad vibration caused by collasped engine mounts"

Edwin H., TX (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350 3.5-L V6)

"I had them replaced"

Arlander K., LA (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350 3.5-L V6)
Oil leaks

"The five previous minor oil leaks showed up under the front of car on cardboard we kept on the garage floor. When we took the car in for service, the leak was from the turbo seals which wee replaced with minor loss of engine oil. Our timely noticing the leak and getting service kept engine damage from taking place. Then this May 15, 2020, at about 123,600 miles, the dash notice to check the engine oil level at the next refueling came on. Arriving at home, I checked the oil dipstick to find the oil level over two quarts low. To be safe, I added a quart and took the car in to our local MERCEDES-BENZ dealer for service. This time the vacuum pump had a major oil leak which was dripping on the hot engine exhaust manifold, and being burnt up there before dripping on the garage floor. The vacuum pump and seal had to be replaced."

Anonymous, TX (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350 BlueTec 3.0-L V6 diesel)

"The engine seal had to be replaced. The part was only a few hundred dollars but several days of labor cost thousands."

Jon P., NC (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350 BlueTec 3.0-L V6 diesel)

"dealer overfilled oil at service"

Anonymous, MI (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E550 5.5-L V8 turbo)

"Minor leak at camshaft solenoid. Fixed by replacing solenoid."

Paul G., OR (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350 3.5-L V6)

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"When the vehicle is stationary during a heavy rain, water will drip from both sides of the interior where the convertible top meets the windshield frame posts. Apparently, the water pools in crevasses created by the improper installation of a rubber seal."

Anonymous, (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350 BlueTec 3.5-L V6)

"windshield washer tank broke and I was told it was a common problem and cost $300 to fix"

Anonymous, NV (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350 3.5-L V6)

"The car has a glass roof. The small front panel seems to have a broken seal and a little water came in after the car was parked in the open during a very heavy rainstorm. I've noticed it twice. Hope to resolve the problem soon with a windshield company."

Anonymous, GA (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350 BlueTec 3.0-L V6 diesel)
Squeaks or rattles

"There is a noticeable rattling from the undercarriage of the vehicle when it rides on rough roads or goes over bumps. The dealer can find nothing wrong or the underlying cause, however, it is more noticeable when the vehicle is cold rather than when it has been driven for a while."

Anonymous, (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350 BlueTec 3.5-L V6)

"After about 3 years, a number of annoying rattles began to surface from under the dash"

Mark B., TX (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350 3.5-L V6)

"The rear package shelf is rattling"

Anonymous, VA (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350 3.5-L V6)

"Car leaks about .5 quarts every 6 months. An expensive cars like this shouldn't leak oil"

Adam S., IN (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350 3.5-L V6)

"Cold start valve rattle due oil starvation. Problem diagnosed & corrected (systemic oil feed deficiency to rear valves) by factory rep & dealer"

John S., VA (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350 BlueTec 3.5-L V6)

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

What Owners Say

Loose exterior trim or moldings

"Another one of MB's customer satisfaction issues - the glue used on the interior wood trim was defective which was known to MB. All of a sudden the trim started to lift off and had to be replaced - but as we would expect this happened after the warranty period and wasn't covered even after the issue was know to MB."

Al M., FL (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350 3.5-L V6)

"not a big deal. small item around window was loose maybe due to break in attempt"

Anonymous, ON (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350 BlueTec 3.5-L V6)

"The spoiler on the trunk on this sport model has continuously come loose and requires frequent reattachment. Mercedes said "it is hot down here in Texas, so the adhesive does not always hold". Well it is hot in Texas so Mercedes should have an adhesive that works where they sell their cars"

Mark B., TX (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350 3.5-L V6)
Loose interior trim or moldings

"Wood appliqus inside the vehicle have begun to delaminate and stick out from the dashboard and doors, which resulted in 2 of them break. Cost to replace the item high and I expected much better fit and finish from a $64000 car."

Anonymous, VA (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350 3.5-L V6)

"passenger side wood trim on door de-laminated."

Anonymous, FL (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E550 4.6-L V8 turbo)
Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"The steering wheel and window switches have all peeled and are not legible as to their function. Dealer says its due to a hand cream that has caused the peeling. Thjis is the first car that I've ever seen with this problem. MERCEDES-BENZ should have replaced under warranty."

Anonymous, CA (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350 3.5-L V6)

"chips...bumper black spot..."

Anonymous, QC (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350 3.5-L V6)

"Front left and right LED "Fog lights"/driving lights failed requiring complete unit replacement. Replacements provide inappropriate lamination as either fog or driving lights."

Anonymous, VA (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350 BlueTec 3.5-L V6)

"Electric malfunction in central break light secondary to wiper fluid leak (It is a wagon)"

Anonymous, ON (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350 3.5-L V6)
Headlights

"Left xenon headlight turned to pink. Had to pay $325 for new one, but white color of lamp totally different from other lamp. Waited 4 months for burn-in as directed by dealer but no change. Corporate MB USA agreed to replace other headlamp free of charge, but this headlamp did not match replacement on left, but was closer to the one it was replacing. So dealer re-installed original right lamp and put this one on the left to replace first replacement lamp. Still not great match between right and left side. I think I got shafted by both dealer and MB USA! Very disappointing, cost and disturbing experience."

Michael R., MI (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350 3.5-L V6)

"Too frequent burn outs"

Anonymous, VA (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350 BlueTec 3.5-L V6)

Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt.

What Owners Say

Engine rebuild or replacement

"Engine was very noisy when purchased. Local dealer brushed off my concerns telling me the clattering noise was "normal for the model year". Later, either first or second service visit, the dealer service department told me they had an internal recall on a specific set of engines which required a full bearing replacement in the engine. Apparently the bearings had been slightly oversized for the shafts and rods, thus requiring replacement. This meant a full overhaul of all bearings, but not to"

Daniel K., TX (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350 3.5-L V6)
Head gasket

"Car was not suffering any oil leaks but dealer indicated that gasket needed to be replaced at a cost of over $600 which seems very high to me."

Anonymous, CT (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350 3.5-L V6)
Timing belt or chain

"tensioner needed to be replaces and the warranty mentioned tensioner was coverd by MERCEDES-BENZ refused stating warranty referred to a different one inside the engine but the warranty made no such distinction"

Anonymous, (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350 3.5-L V6)

"Within the past year we started noticing an engine clatter when starting thee engine. The clatter would disappear once the engine warmed up. Our MERCEDES-BENZ service advisor said the timing tensioners had become worn and slack, allowing the timing chain to clatter. So at 122003 miles we took the car in to have the timing chain, tensioners, and seals replaced, which stopped the clatter."

Anonymous, TX (2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350 BlueTec 3.0-L V6 diesel)

What Owners Say

"The clip for the convertible top snapped (which I was told is a common occurrence) According to MB you have to replace the entire liner since the clip is inside the liner and can't be repaired. Note: BMW puts a slit in their convertible top so the clip can be swapped out. Keep in mind the vehicle has approx. 14,500 miles and is garage kept."
