Like its bookend siblings -- the compact C-Class and flagship S-Class -- the E-Class embraces the same curvaceous design language that brings it into line with the current family theme. With its redesign, this iconic sedan remains competitive, but Mercedes-Benz shifts the focus of the E-Class toward handling agility and fuel economy, with less emphasis on ride comfort and roominess.

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for over 300,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2021 vehicles are holding up in 17 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical system. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

    Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

    In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

    What Owners Say

    Backup or other camera/sensors

"Not very informative or accurate in anything but full sunlight. In streetlight conditions it is very unpredictable. It will warn you are close to curbs or obsticales but when get out and check you are not close. Yet, it will not warn at all and allow the car to strike a curb. The 3D view in low or streetlight conditions is so grey and fuzzy it is usless to look at. My Toyota Avalon was better."

    Anonymous, CA (2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E400 3.0-L V6 turbo)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"At one time the whole audio system won't play sound, I had to restart the car to get it to work. This is not a Bluetooth pairing issue since the radio won't play either"

    Anonymous, CA (2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E300 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"iPod frequently freezes when attached via USB and must be rebooted"

"Needed to replace the antenna and housing"

    Anonymous, IL (2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E300 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The maps are hopelessly out of date. A $300 Garmin on the dash would do a better job. Also, the auto manufacturers still think it's good business to charge $200 for map refreshes when a Garmin comes with "lifetime" updates!"

    P A., AZ (2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E300 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The navigation is clearly a rewrite of the 2014 E navigation and is full of bugs and can be dangerous to use. Sometimes, it tells me to make a right turn when there is no possible turn and a few seconds later, it tells me that I should make a left turn. Sometimes, it can not find the destination and takes me in circles. The car should be recalled"

    G W., MD (2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E300 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"difficult to enter address verbally at times"

    Anonymous, NJ (2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E400 3.0-L V6 turbo)

    Shirley B., AZ (2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E300 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

    "Same as radio"

    Anonymous, (2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E300 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    Speakers

"The speakers rattle at low to medium bass volume, sounds like the speakers are mounted loosely with missing screws, or a scratch in the cone. This makes the quality of the speakers worse than a $10K car. At one time the audio system completely failed and no sound can be played, I had to cold-restart the car"

    Remote engine starter

"Haven't been able to set up the remote start feature I am very disappointed in the operating reliability of the auto stop/start feature. It usually doesn't function. The car is under extended warranty and has been taken to a M-B dealer three times to address this issue (along with windows not auto closing correctly, engine light on (reportedly for transmission release valve which was replaced) and regular 10K oil change). The stop/start frequently still does not operate and the dealer has claimed it is not atypical. The stop/start has worked correctly in the loaner cars provided to me."

    What Owners Say

    Other/unsure

"I did not feel that my vehicle would automatically stop so I put a large, wide box on styrofoam then proceeded to drive to the box at 20mph. My vehicle plowed over the box. Supposedly MB fixed the problem however I don't feel the vehicle will automatically stop on its own without me touching the brakes. I try this by slowing down for stopped traffic, then take my foot off the brake when the vehicle is traveling ~5mph. I watch as my E300 gets closer and closer to the car in front of me and I end up slamming on the brakes. Again, MB said nothing is wrong."

    Charles K., CA (2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E300 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"After 3 visits to MERCEDES-BENZ and calls to MB North America office, I was informed that the drunk driver lane keeping assist is normal for my vehicle. A drunk driver can keep the vehicle in between the lines than my vehicle and forget about keeping the vehicle between the lines on curves in the road."

    Charles K., CA (2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E300 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"It uses cameras to get the speed limit. Theses are not accurate. It will misread the limits while on the freeway and slam on the brakes to slow the car, for no legitimate reason. Very, very dangerous. Could easily get rear ended."

    Automatic climate control

"When you put on the heat, at a certain point, hot air no longer blows. MB says it's because the car "senses" that the car is warm enough inside, but I've never had that in a car, and if I'm cold, I have to then keep bumping the temperature up to get it to blow hot air again (and sometimes you can't bump it up anymore)."

    Anonymous, CA (2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E400 3.0-L V6 turbo)
    Heater system

I've been told that the system is "smart" to make sure I don't overheat when I brought it in for service, but I don't believe this because my prior Mercedes (same coupe model) did not do this, and it does not do this from an air conditioning perspective (it does not become warm, ever). It's bad because I cannot get warm at times!"

    AIR BAGS
    Feb 08, 2017
If the passenger front air bag does not deploy as intended in the event of a crash, it can increase the risk of a injury.
    Summary:
Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2017 E300, E300 4Matic, and E43 AMG vehicles. The front passenger occupant detection control unit may have been incorrectly installed.
