The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is a military-spec inspired SUV that's distinguished by its square-shaped body. The standard 443-hp turbo six-cylinder engine replaces the burly 416-hp twin-turbo V8 that powered the base model G550. There's still a potent V8 in the AMG G63 version, which also gets a 48-volt mild hybrid system. A nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are standard, and a range of off-road biased gear ratios and locking differentials are available. There's also an all-electric G580 with 579 hp. The G-Class's independent suspension improves ride and handling to nearly civilized levels.

The cabin has also been brought into the 21st century. The dials, vents, and infotainment system now mirror what a Mercedes customer would find in a typical E-Class or S-Class luxury sedan. All the important safety gear, such as automatic emergency braking and forward collision warning, are standard.
