The updated GLK is a small but posh SUV that's quick and agile. After a freshening for 2013, the GLK scored much higher than the original version we tested in 2009. It also got a revised interior that felt more substantial and luxurious.

Its tidy size, responsive handling, and good visibility make it easy to maneuver and handy in the city. The GLK feels solid on the highway, rides well for the most part and is quiet. On top of all that, it's extremely quick and gets a respectable 21 mpg. The diesel version got considerably better mileage, but without the brisk acceleration.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Fuel System

Check engine light, sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor), emission control devices (includes EGR), engine computer, engine computer, fuel cap, fuel gauge/sender, fuel injection system, fuel pump, fuel leaks, stalling or hesitation.

What Owners Say

Emission control devices (includes EGR)

"Heater on the add blue system went out within 90 days of warranty expiration"

Tim K., TX (2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class GLK250 2.1-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"Failure if the pump that injects the bluetec fluid into the catalytic converter. That was followed weeks later by failure of both NOX sensors. Total cost of repair $4,600"

Anonymous, NC (2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class GLK250 2.1-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"adblue heater needed replacing ... the engine counts down and after 20 starts won't start since the program assumes that emission standards won't be met.. repair was 1.5kCA$ , but MB replaced it under warranty .. v happy about that."

Anonymous, ON (2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class GLK250 2.1-L 4 Cyl diesel)
Fuel injection system

"Got a check engine light, but no operation problems. Took it to MB Dealer's shop for check/repair. Correction required software replacement related to emissions control. New software installed and check engine light extinguished. The unsatisfactory part of this was that the dealer charged me for the replacement (new) software...about $200. My experience with other vehicles has been that when defective software requires replacement it's done at the manufacturer's expense. I don't think that MERCEDES-BENZ engineers expect customers to replace certain parts of the emissions control software at about 89K miles. I protested but to no avail. This car has been bullet proof otherwise and a joy to drive."

Anonymous, NY (2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class GLK350 3.5-L V6)
Fuel pump

"noisy sound on start up-replaced high pressure fuel pump under cert used warranty"

Anonymous, MN (2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class GLK350 3.5-L V6)
Sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor)

"The engine light comes then it goes away. One dealer told me not to worry about it, but I do"

F L., ON (2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class GLK250 2.1-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"MB gives you only 10 starts once the onboard system detects an emission problem, I was down to my last start to find a MB dealer that could take me right away."

Dennis M., ON (2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class GLK250 2.1-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"Both diesel NOX sensors failed, one failed 6 weeks after the other. The car gave me a 10 start countdown to repair or car would shut down. Each repair cost $2200."

Arthur R., NC (2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class GLK250 2.1-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"NOX sensor required replacement"

Anonymous, ON (2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class GLK250 2.1-L 4 Cyl diesel)

Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, leaks.

What Owners Say

Exhaust leaks

"See my comment on the previous question."

Richard H., MA (2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class GLK350 3.5-L V6)

"Our private mechanic showed the holes in the exhaust system/pipes I believe when we had it in for 50000 mile service. He told me he sees it frequently with MERCEDES-BENZ and I suspect several other MERCEDES-BENZ owners were experiencing the same problem because the welded together and large part was backordered to Germany. It took several weeks for it to arrive. The total cost of this job was a totally unacceptable $3000. We did not consider going to a Midas or similar; my wife wanted original equipment replacement since she is planning on driving this car for a long time."

Anonymous, MA (2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class GLK350 3.5-L V6)
Other/unsure

"command would not record from flash drive or ubs drive"

Anonymous, CA (2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class GLK350 3.5-L V6)

"UREA injection pump failed"

Paul R., ON (2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class GLK250 2.1-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"National Recall issued early February 2018 for Takata airbags in front passenger door that could cause an explosion with shrapnel & metal parts throughout the interior cabin leading to serious injuries or DEATH. As of May 18, 2019 “Parts Allegedly Unavailable” per Service Directors at 4 dealerships, per National Consumer Hotline In bi-monthly calls. NO ONE SEEMS TO CARE, despite letters to the CEO in New Jersey, later moved South, not to CEO of Damlier in Germany. No response to CEO’s and no solution offered by MERCEDES-BENZ Consumer Hotline such as requests for a “loaner car” or a “rental car.” Have restricted driving to myself only and can not transport 4 passengers. I have a daughter in High School that attends many different events but we are precluded from using this vehicle due to the extreme dangers involved. The recall notice and all subsequent communications with all MERCEDES-BENZ personnel deny any deaths occurring worldwide. I have specific information from an Attorney employed by MERCEDES-BENZ that this information is COMPLETELY FALSE !! Filed complaints with Federal Automotive Regulatory Agencies and State Attorney General’s Office with receipt of only one template letter advising “We will be following up with your Complaint.” Nothing further for at least one year !! I will NEVER, EVER Purchase or Lease any MERCEDES-BENZ Product in my life. Next is a Class Action lawsuit that I am organizing with the largest law firm worldwide !! Hopefully that should garner some attention and hit them in their handbags, which is unfortunately the only way to get the attention of MultiNational Corporations."

Joel O., CA (2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class GLK350 2.1-L 4 Cyl diesel)
Pipes

"The belt holding up the exhaust pipe broke and the muffler plus exhaust pipe dragged on the road"

Anonymous, QC (2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class GLK350 3.5-L V6)

"I thought all exhausts these days are stainless steel. Not so! Our MERCEDES-BENZ is part stainless and part plain steel which is what corroded particularly at the clamps. One hole in a pipe prior to a clamp was about 2_inches. Parts alone were $2000+ and were backordered. Waited several weeks for parts from Germany. My excellent private mechanic said my experience is par for the course for many Mercedes, especially with salt on the roads here in the Northeast. This the only issue we have had with this car since we bought it used in 2015 with 24000 miles."

Richard H., MA (2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class GLK350 3.5-L V6)

"I consider "pipes" to be the same problem as "exhaust." The entire welded assembly - and I'm thinking it included 2 mufflers - was remarkably large. One note however: To my surprise it wasn't all stainless steel. No wonder some of it rusted out."
