The updated GLK is a small but posh SUV that's quick and agile. After a freshening for 2013, the GLK scored much higher than the original version we tested in 2009. It also got a revised interior that felt more substantial and luxurious.
Its tidy size, responsive handling, and good visibility make it easy to maneuver and handy in the city. The GLK feels solid on the highway, rides well for the most part and is quiet. On top of all that, it's extremely quick and gets a respectable 21 mpg. The diesel version got considerably better mileage, but without the brisk acceleration.
The downside of the GLK's tidy size is that it has less space than many midsized sedans. The backseat is relatively tight, but the short rear doors make access difficult. As is typical with German luxury cars of the time, some controls are complicated and take getting used to. And, on uneven pavement, the GLK tends to rock from side-to-side.
All in all, the GLK a fun runabout for urban empty nesters, but not ideal as a family-friendly SUV.
