The Mountaineer is a plusher, upscale version of the Ford Explorer. It seats seven with the optional third row. Optional adjustable pedals allow shorter drivers to find a comfortable driving position. The standard engine is an adequate-performing but coarse-sounding 4.0-liter V6; a more powerful 4.6-liter V8 is also available. The ride is firm and controlled. Handling is sound if unexceptional.
