Mercury Sable

EPA MPG: NA

CR's Take
This roomy sedan, formerly the Mercury Montego, like its Ford Taurus twin, emphasizes comfort and good ergonomics. The Sable's elevated seating position provides good outward vision and cabin access. But the lack of a telescoping steering wheel compromises the driving position for some. Both the rear seat and trunk are immense. The 3.5-liter engine is punchy and gets 18 mpg overall. The ride is comfortable, and handling is responsive. Crash-test results are impressive. Side and curtain air bags and ESC are standard. 2009 is the Sable's final year.
