CR's Take

The Clubman is a longer and wider version of the four-door Cooper and shares its platform with the BMW X1. The four-cylinder turbo engine is punchy and sounds sporty. Handling is quite nimble, but the ride is very firm and road noise is pronounced. Unlike the regular Coopers, the Clubman's back seat is habitable. Controls take some getting used to but ultimately prove to be logical. The rear view is compromised by the two rear barn doors. With typical options, the Clubman's price ascends quickly toward the $40,000 mark. All-wheel drive is available. FCW and AEB with pedestrian detection are standard, but BSW is conspicuously absent.

2016 Redesign Year

The Clubman is a longer and wider version of the four-door Cooper and now shares its platform with the BMW X1. Engine choices include a slightly wheezy-sounding three-cylinder turbo in the base car or a quicker and more enjoyable-sounding four-cylinder turbo in the S. The base Clubman we tested posted a very good 28 mpg overall. Handling is quite nimble, but the ride is very firm and road noise is pronounced. Unlike the regular Coopers, the Clubman's backseat is actually habitable. Controls take some getting used to, and the rear view is compromised by the two rear barn doors. An all-wheel-drive version is available on the S. 2018 models came standard with a backup camera. Apple CarPlay support is now part of the Technology package. The three-cylinder turbo engine was discontinued for 2020. 2024 is the final year for the Clubman.

2008-2015

2008 Redesign Year

The larger and somewhat more practical Clubman arrived in 2008 with a small third door and a useful back seat and more cargo space, but it seats just four. It has a small door on the passenger side of the car that opens rearward, easing rear-seat access. The rear doors are hinged on the sides and open like a gate, but they hamper rear visibility. Otherwise it feels and drives just like the regular, fun-to-drive Mini. Fuel economy is excellent, ranging from 29 to 33 mpg depending on the version. A high-horsepower JCW version is also offered starting from 2009.
