"Mini engineers the thermostat housing using 2 dissimilar materials. The different materials age, flex and fatigue at different rates with the many thermo cycles. Also they engineered oil channels through these materials. After so many cycles, the thermostat housing cracks due to dissimilar flex/fatigue allowing oil leaks. Depending on where the housing cracks, the oil leak (and possibly water leaks) could be catastrophic. In my case, the cracks were catastrophic allowing leaks at > 1 quart per 10 minutes of run time. This resulted in a repair of > $3000 because of the amount of disassemble needed to get to the housing and the number of water and oil connections made to this area. Unlike older cars that you can just take off 2 bolts and pop off the thermostat housing, this is a major repair and can stop a car in its tracks if the leak is big enough. This also happened to my second MINI, my Countryman, and a friends Cooper JCW so it's clearly a design defect or engineering problem."

The electric auxiliary water pump may fail and cause the circuit board to overheat.
What should you do:
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the electric auxiliary water pump, free of charge. Depending on the model, there are currently limited parts available, however not all parts are available at this time. Owners will be notified of the recall beginning June 11, 2018, and will receive a second notification when remedy parts become available.
