Road Test

This version of the Galant is a sound car. The four-cylinder engine delivers quick acceleration and decent fuel economy, but is very noisy under acceleration. The stiff ride transmits impacts to the passengers, and the wide, 43-foot turning circle hampers maneuverability. Quality of the interior materials and rear-seat room are on par with that of competitors. Overall, this is a middle-of-the-pack sedan, but it grew dated over its long shelf life. Stability control was made standard in 2010.

2004-2012

2004 Redesign Year

The Galant of the early 2000s offered a strong 3.0-liter V6, a relatively quiet and composed ride, as well as reasonably agile handling. The front seats weren't very comfortable however, and space was tight in the rear. Traction control became standard on V6 models in 2001. In 2004, the Galant was redesigned, but it still trailed the competition. Handling wasn't agile, the four-cylinder engine was spirited but noisy, and the ride was choppy and stiff even on smooth pavement. The revised V6 was unimpressive and a wide turning circle made parking awkward. The GTS V6 model was very quick, but suffered from too much torque steer. The V6 was discontinued in 2010 and 2012 was the Galant's last model year.

1999-2003

1999 Redesign Year

The Galant has been a competent sedan, though always a notch below the excellent Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. For 1994 the Galant was slightly enlarged and got new safety features. The 2.4-liter four-cylinder provides lively acceleration. The car handles securely, but its brakes are unimpressive. Redesigned for 1999, the Galant offers an improved automatic transmission and a strong 3.0-liter V6. It has a comfortable, quiet ride and reasonably agile handling. The driver's seat provides only marginal comfort, however, and space is limited in the rear. Traction control became standard on V6 models in 2001.
