Despite a few high points, this iteration of the Nissan Altima is not competitive among midsized sedans. In a segment brimming with better cars, the Altima is a lackluster choice, ranking below virtually all of its competitors with a humdrum driving experience. Among its virtues are a roomy rear seat and good fuel economy. That said, with the standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder, we measured a commendable 31 mpg overall.

Anonymous, OH (2015 Nissan Altima SV 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I've had to take the car back to a Nissan dealer 3 times for airbag warning light issues. The first time was in connection with a recall for the passenger airbag, the second time was for replacement of the airbag ECU, the third (current) is for replacement of the driver's side airbag (also necessitating replacing the driver's seat). "There have been 7 or so recalls on this vehicle 4 of which related to the airbags. After the Nissan Dealership performed some of recalls on our 2015 Nissan Altima a few months later we had a problem with a bad passenger airbag seat sensor that Nissan refused to repair at their cost even though they had made software changes to the passenger side airbag in the past under a recall and we even had a 120,000 full extended warranty that they said did not cover the airbags. Called them to appeal but they would do nothing to help us so we had to pay close to $300 out-of-pocket to repair this safety issue."

Bruce B., NJ (2015 Nissan Altima SL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

This vehicle wore thru the brake pads @ 29-30,000 miles and into the rotors. I was advised of this after an ordinary maintenance visit.I was advisewd, not only pads but new rotors.I declined the rotors and had them turned instead. No maintenance light came on to warn me about low pads and I have not changed my diving habits..how could the pads have worn so quickly and why didn't the Light come on.Unfortunately I was at an out of State (Nissan)Dealer when I went for ordinary service so didn't pursue the issue.I haven't been back to my normal dealer.Due for service now !"

"had to replace brake pads and rotors several thousand miles before recommended brake check and inspection; brakes were squeaking but during a very rainy season so thought this was normal given brakes usually squeak a bit when wet. turns out the pads had worn down and damaged the rotors as well. i keep close track of maintenance intervals so was very surprised that i had this much wear before the recommended brake replacement mileage"

"Recently had a 21 point inspection done by my dealership. I noticed they gave me a "yellow" condition on my rear brakes at 87,691. I had just replaced them with Nissan parts (pads and rotors) at 64,099 miles. A difference of 23,592 miles! I don't ride my brakes and I don't live in a city, where it's stop and go. How can I go 64,000 miles on my 'original brakes' and get 23,592 on new ones? With Nissan parts! In general I should be getting 30,000-70,000 miles! Have not inquired with them yet because of the Virus keeping me at home mostly."

What Owners Say

Transmission rebuild or replacement

"When we purchased the car it was found that the transmission was bad, The dealer replaced a new transmission. The car was leased previously."

Anonymous, NY (2015 Nissan Altima)

"My transmission had to be rebuilt when the computer revealed some serious issues with acceleration. I had taken it in because of a serious delay between when I depressed the accelerator pedal and when the car actually began accelerating, which put me in a danger situation on an ice-covered road when I couldn't get out of the way fast enough of flowing traffic."

David M., NY (2015 Nissan Altima SL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Vehicle had 37000 miles on it when internal components of the CVT transmission came apart (rebuilder used the term grenaded). Nissan refused to cover under warranty as this vehicle had a salvage title. Dealer wanted to charge $4900 to repair transmission, local transmission shop charged $3790 and had to provide a new case as all parts were ruined from internal parts (grenading). Nissan won't announce a recall for these defective CVT transmissions but will replace them under warranty if warranty is still valid. Assholes! They know these CVT'S are defective but the customer is stuck with them. Assholes!"

"Check engine light lit up on highway trip; just refilled. I made sure the fuel cap was on correctly. No help. I was able to go by the dealer as soon as I got to town. Checked it immediately, couldn't find anything with a quick check. They reset the trouble light & said MAYBE there was a problem with excess vapor going to the emission system after we filled up, but bring it back if it didn't cure it. The light came back on on the way home. We took it back to the dealer a couple of days later. Tu"

Corrosion to the secondary latch may cause it to bind and remain in the unlatched position when the hood is closed. If the primary latch is inadvertently released again and the secondary latch is not engaged, the hood could unexpectedly open while driving, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
Summary:
Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2018 Nissan Altima vehicles. If the primary hood latch is inadvertently released, there is an increased likelihood that the secondary hood latch may corrode over time.
What should you do:
Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will install a stronger release spring in the hood release lever, a warning label near the secondary hood latch, and an Owner¿s Manual addendum card with instructions on how to lubricate and maintain the secondary hood latch mechanism, free of charge. Interim notices informing owners of the safety risk were mailed July 14, 2020. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. The remedy is expected to become available in July 2021. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Note: Recall 16V-029 remains open for any unremedied 2013-2015 Altimas and this recall applies to all vehicles covered by 16V-029 even if those repairs have already been performed.

What should you do:
Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will secure the latch-lock cables in the correct position using the new remedy procedure, free of charge. The recall began February 5, 2019. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7669.
