This version of the Frontier shares a platform and components with the larger Titan pickup and Xterra SUV. It is a big step forward compared to the old version. We found this Frontier quick and nimble with a tolerable ride. The powerful engine gives it a V8-like feel. The tight rear seat is a drawback and the tailgate is very heavy. Side- and curtain-airbags and stability control are standard equipment.

    Reliability

We expect the 2022 Frontier to be less reliable than other new cars. This prediction is based on the inconsistencies in some recent Nissan models.

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for over 300,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2021 vehicles are holding up in 17 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical system. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

    Anonymous, ON (2011 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X 4.0-L V6)

"My mechanic was surprised to see all 4 rotors & calipers wear out at this "young" mileage. Me too"

    Ian D., PE (2011 Nissan Frontier SV 4.0-L V6)

"At 23981 miles I discovered that the inside brake pad on the front drivers side as well as the inside of the passenger rear pad had worn down to metal which required the replacement of the rear rotor"

    Tom H., NC (2011 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X 4.0-L V6)

"I have replaced the pads and rotors twice since I purchased the vehicle, although I have only put 52,000 km on it. I have also replaced the calipers. My mechanic suggests that I don't drive it enough! It sits for a week at a time while I am on the road in a transport truck."

    Ian D., PE (2011 Nissan Frontier SV 4.0-L V6)
    Regular brake failure

    "disc pads"

Anonymous, NY (2011 Nissan Frontier SV 4.0-L V6)

"The right rear rotor had worn down to it was almost paper thin requiring its replacement"

    Tom H., NC (2011 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X 4.0-L V6)

"Dealer said too much rust on rotors. Couldn't pass state inspection. I'm very skeptical they were just running up the tab. I should have had them fail it, then get another opinion. Very low mileage on the vehicle, careful operator, garaged nearly 100% of the time."

    Paul S., VT (2011 Nissan Frontier SV 4.0-L V6)

    "Noted in previous comments"

    Ian D., PE (2011 Nissan Frontier SV 4.0-L V6)

    Loose/rattling heat shield

"Heat shield retainers are made of steel and rusted away within 2 years. I replaced with stainless steel aftermarket bands."

Anonymous, RI (2011 Nissan Frontier SV 4.0-L V6)

"Heat shield failed on area not immediately underneath passenger cab. Rattle was significant at idle - enough to draw the ire of pedestrians and anyone nearby, but was inaudible and/or not present when above 1200 RPM. Shop attempted to repair (weld) the shield, which remedied it for about 2 months, at which point the remainder of the shield failed. Ultimately the shop recommended we remove that part of the heat shield since it was not protecting any important part of the cab in our model (a king cab, which is shorter than a crew cab.) I confirmed the advice was in line with other owners via Frontier ownership forums. Total repair cost was $250-300."

Anonymous, CA (2011 Nissan Frontier SV 4.0-L V6)
    Other/unsure

"Front Zone crash sensor malfunctioned. Poor location/shielding of sensor caused water and road salt to allow sensor to rust and fail. Sensor was so rusted that is required a significant effort to remove."

    "Recall"

    Kenneth F., PA (2011 Nissan Frontier SV 4.0-L V6)

"Airbag warning light came on in Feb. 2017. It was repaired by the dealer but reappeared within a few months. It was repaired again with the same result. The vehicle was still under warranty. The dealer indicated the fix may require seat replacement; however this was not done. The third fix lasted until after the warranty expired. Now, they want to replace the seat. My estimated cost $2500. I resisted and they forwarded me to Corporate. Corporate came back with a 70-30% deal. My cost about $750. I’m still unhappy because I feel it should have been repaired while still under warranty. So, I’m looking to trade the vehicle..."

    Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, clutch replacement.

    What Owners Say

    Clutch replacement

"3rd clutch replacement from new... Have since learned that the clutch specified by Nissan was not adequate for the 4 liter engine... It was for the 3 liter engine previously supplied and unable to handle the torque of the larger engine, especially under the towing conditions I subject it to"

    D H., CA (2011 Nissan Frontier SV 4.0-L V6)

"Clutch specified for my vehicle is inadequate for the engine specifications... There is absolutely NO reason for a clutch to fail in 30,000 to 34,000miles. !!!"

    D H., CA (2011 Nissan Frontier SV 4.0-L V6)

    "6th gear Synchro failed"

    D H., CA (2011 Nissan Frontier SV 4.0-L V6)

    Anonymous, KS (2011 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X 4.0-L V6)

"In the king cab model with the smaller stub doors, a number of serious rattles have begun to creep into the cab. They appear to come from the interior plastic trim, which is both rigid and somewhat poorly fastened. Nothing is directly loose, but it is noticable on uneven pavement (more than all of our other vehicles.)"

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

    What Owners Say

    Clutch adjustment

"Not really an adjustment, but choices were limited in survey. A very small plastic part crumbles rendering the clutch lock-out to start the engine disabled. YouTube to the rescue, and I fixed it myself. The minute plastic part, small enough to swallow, a few grams of plastic, cost me over $20 at the dealer. Wow. One of the reasons I probably won't buy another Nissan."
