With this iteration, the long-running Pathfinder was transformed from a truck-based workhorse into a softer, gentler, car-based SUV with three rows and seven seats. The enlarged interior and easier access moved it closer to a family-friendly minivan substitute. But we found the Pathfinder to be a little too much like a minivan.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"We are impressed with the CVT transmission. It does very good at optimizing power and economy!"

Anonymous, IL (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"Besides brake issue which has been repaired through a recall this vehicle handles very well in all road conditions."

DAVID S., TN (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"The vehicle bucks at slow speeds like a manual tranny in a gear to high from a stop. Adding throttle makes it stop."

Anonymous, CA (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"Acceleration is adequate but handling is poor. Braking distance seems especially lengthy."

L D., WV (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"Have really enjoyed driving this car. It's fast off the go when needed in both 2 wheel & all wheel drive. Traction is accurate and braking in total is highly effective. A great drive. Only problem is cabin noise."

B B., AB (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"has excellent pickup and handles well"

Gene W., TX (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"Engine is fine and the ride is very nice with the New Pirelli tires. Original tires were xxxxx and lasted 18,500 miles. Hate the front-wheel drive. Especially when turning while accelerating."

Timothy H., FL (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"See prior note about noise and ride which also applies to handling."

J D., MA (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"Acceleration is strong, but handling is poor. Hood vibrates at interstate speed. Traction is poor in snow even with AWD."

Anonymous, VA (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"This vehicle is very smooth, handles like a dream, and accelerates nicely. The only problem that we seem to have is that we catch ourselves going above the speed limit if we do not use the cruise control because it does not feel like we are going that speed."

Anonymous, OK (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"Great acceleration and handling"

Dave M., IL (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"The new CVT transmission took several adjustments to operate with a feeling of acceleration. The car drove as if it had a rubber-band drive. Acceleration onto highways was tedious and dangerous. Engine would rev high, but no acceleration. It finally took a conversation with Nissan to get them to communicate with dealer on how to fix issue. Car now shifts securely and drives as if it still had the multiple speed automatic."

Becky P., TX (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"The steering is vague and the vehicle wanders easily. You cannot relax your concentration."

Anonymous, ON (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"poor acceleration, especially off the line. Too much body lean on turns."

Anonymous, NH (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"Acceleration. Great pick up. Handles well"

Anonymous, NJ (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"The seats are too stiff and I get numb after driving for 2 hours. Had to purchase gell pads for driver and passenger seats."

HEIDI L., NC (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"It's a quiet ride and that is good as I do lots of calling through the blue tooth."

MATTHEW M., WI (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"Seats are comfortable, but driver and rear seat leg room is poor."

L D., WV (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"The ride is very comfortable and usually smooth, even for people with motion sickness. AC system works very well. Seats are very comfortable"

JULIE S., SC (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"Middle row seat sliding function was critical for using with 3 small children and attendant car seats."

SEAN-MELISA B., MA (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"There is an intermittent short in my power seats and power mirrors. Some times they work and some times they don't. The dealer's mechanics can not find the problem."

D N., TX (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"The seats are very comfortable and I especially like the sliding function that makes it easier to get in and out of the car."

Anonymous, ON (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"The seats are not as comfortable as I would expect for a vehicle of this caliber. On long drives they leave a lot to be desired. The ride is too bouncy on rough roads. Stiffer suspension or adjustable suspension would be a be a big benefit."

BRIAN H., TX (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"the seats and ride are very good and the ventilated front seats are nice in Arizona."

DAVID M., WA (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"Our Pathfinder has 39K miles, but the seats are VERY uncomfortable on long drives. The padding has broken down already. We now have purchased foam pads to remediate."

Anonymous, KS (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"Rear two rows of seats are very uncomfortable for adults"

Anonymous, GA (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"The ride is nice seats are comfortable and overall noise at speed is acceptable. Climate controls work well and a/c and heat work well"

R S., AZ (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"It would be better if there was less outside noise getting inside."

J D., MA (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"Car can not cool on very hot day. Car does not heat interior enough on very cold day. Windows prone to freezing, does not go up after being opened in freezing weather. Has to drive with windows open in freezing weather!"

Anonymous, MA (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"This vehicle is a very comfortable ride for long or short trips."

DAVID S., TN (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"Regarding the Ride: With the original tire the vehicle handled and road quite well but when I replaced all 4 tires with Michelins at about 27,000 there was very noticeable improvement in both handling, ride and road noise."

J D., MA (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"This is one of the most comfortable vehicles I have ever been in. The seats are comfortable! Very quiet ride. The multi area temperature controls is wonderful. The heated and cooled seats are great in the heat of the summer and the cold of the winter."

Anonymous, OK (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"The seats are very comfortable, especially when we go on long drives for vacation. The ride is comfortable and stable with steering predictable. Noise is very apparent from the second row doors. There does not seem to be as much insulation in the doors as the front. One can tell when opening/closing the second row door that the construction is lighter. Switching from the original Continental tires to Michelin has dropped some of the road noise from this area."

Becky P., TX (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"Lack of driver leg and knee room. Road noise is quite pronounced. Ride is satisfactory."

Anonymous, VA (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"Vehicle rides and handles well. Climate control system works well, but there is too much wind noise at highway speeds."

Anonymous, AZ (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"Most comfortable vehicle I have ever driven. I have never gotten sore even after 8+ hour rides. Very quiet ride also."

Steven B., NH (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"Super comfortable, with a huge windshield. Feels like I am at home on my couch, watching a movie. Very quiet for an SUV."

Michael S., WA (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"Great climate control and heated/cooled perforated leather seats."

Anonymous, CA (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"Seat comfort is very good with very good lumbar support and side support"

John S., SC (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"Comfortable seats, lats of room inside vehicle"

Dave M., IL (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"It is a very comfortable highway vehicle and very quiet."

Anonymous, ON (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"Very comfortable vehicle. Seats are supportive but not too firm, ride is compliant without jarring over potholes, very smooth ride overall."

Anonymous, MO (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"For a moderately priced (4 wheel drive) suv it handles and accelerates well."

James P., FL (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"This is one of the most expensive cars I have owned. The brakes needed to be replaced within the first 15 months, the tires within 2 years. They ( the dealer shop) told me my battery cables were corroding within 15 months of owning the car and needed to be replaced. The door frame has rusted. The hood of the car has rusted. I have contacted Nissan and because their warranty is the 36000 miles. They don't care the car is not yet 3 years old. I normally keep cars 10-20 years. (With no rust) AND ha"

KAREN R., IL (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"I bought a new 2013 in 2014 and got a great deal on it!"

Anonymous, CA (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"It was a basic SUV with none of the bells and whistles that the more expensive models had and that is what we wanted - no unwanted or unneeded extras. We are very happy with this economy model and other than the windshield side posts being a major hazard for seeing vehicles coming from the side at a four-way intersection, we would probably purchase one again."

FRANK T., OR (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"I paid more for this new car than my first house and my house was worth a lot more when I sold it 2 years later whereas after 5 years this car is now worth only 1/3 of the purchase price even though it looks and runs like new"

Steven B., NH (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"Overall this one of the best vehicles out there in all of the areas. That is why I bought this second Pathfinder. My last one lasted 13 years with hardly any problems and was still going when I traded it in."

Nancy S., TX (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"Decent purchase value however, resale value is super low compared to other vehicles in same class. Will not buy another one and lose money."

Anonymous, GA (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"Leather interior and available 4 wheel drive make this vehicle a bargain."

James P., FL (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"Had a lot of electrical issues that got repaired, but I had an extended warranty that Nissan said did not cover some of the electrical problems. After much discussion, they covered them. Had door handles break. Gas mileage is very good, especially on the highway."

Frank B., TX (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"Price. Excellent sales rep"

Anonymous, NJ (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"Worst automobile purchase I have ever made. Laundry list of problems since the day we bought this car. Spent over $40k on a brand new car and will never buy another Nissan product again. Major problems with this car across the board. Have a file that is several inches thick showing all the service issues over the past four years. Poorly built car with lackluster acceleration. Major engine and transmission problems. Horrible experience!"

Robert M., CA (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"I was looking for a mid-size SUV that can seat 5 comfortably and 7 in a pinch, can tow 5000 lbs., that gets decent gas mileage, all for the best price. The Pathfinder met these criteria. I looked at the Highlander, Hyundai, Explorer. I didn't consider GM vehicles because I don't like GM. I sometimes regret getting the S trim level instead of upgrading to a higher level to get a backup camera, a roof rack, and integrated Bluetooth audio. But we have worked around not having those features."

Gerald M., WA (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

Styling

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

"It is very family oriented, roomy, versatile, interior & exterior are very good. 29,600 miles & no repairs so far."

MAJDI S., FL (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"Nice styling compared to previous model. Inside leather and simulated wood is nice looking and every bit as nice as SUV's costing much more. First and second row seats are comfortable on long trips."

R S., AZ (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)

"Love the full sunroof, power and gas mileage"

Anonymous, KY (2013 Nissan Pathfinder)
