Rather than Rogue, Nissan could have named this redesigned SUV "Mr. Congeniality." True, that's not very macho, but the model stands out as an easy-to-drive, family-friendly vehicle. And it now ranks among the better small SUVs. The new Rogue has grown larger and more accommodating; it has a spacious cabin, easy access, and plenty of room in the rear seat.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2016 Nissan Rogue owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

"Flooring was soaked with mold"

Anonymous, MA (2016 Nissan Rogue Unsure 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Sunroof leak to interior. Expensive repair"

Anonymous, (2016 Nissan Rogue SL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Water leak at A pillar, resolved by dealer cleaning channel and remounting drain tube. No further problem"

Anonymous, (2016 Nissan Rogue SL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Water leak in rear hatchback window which also caused electrical damage to connections in the hatchback door."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Nissan Rogue SL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Water leak from sunroof"

Peter P., NC (2016 Nissan Rogue SV 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I have had the car for two months and last week the rear window started leaking when it rains. It is a steady stream coming just to the side of the brake light. It runs all down onto the hatch and down into the cargo area. I am taking it to the dealer for repair this week"

Anonymous, NC (2016 Nissan Rogue SL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The back window would leak when it rained, water would run down inside the window to the cargo area. They first thought it was the seal around the middle brake light and replaced that. That did not fix it so I took it back a 2nd time. They said they wanted to replace the entire window and that they wanted to replace another Rogue's window at the same time so I had to take it back a third time. I was given a Versa to drive while my car was being fixed and I feel that it should have been a comparable vehicle to a Rogue. Replacing the window did fix the leak."

Marshall D., NC (2016 Nissan Rogue SL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Squeaks or rattles

"The seat squeaks with any movement (ie, the material inside the seat). The front left corner of the seat squeaks. The front left and right windows rattle because there is not enough insulation type material preventing movement. I have to lower the window to keep them from rattling. There is a rattle coming from under the steering column area that is pronounced when accelerating."

E P., TX (2016 Nissan Rogue SL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Steering wheel and brake pedal squeaking at low speeds."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Nissan Rogue SV 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"down time was 4 days to diagnose & fix"

Anonymous, FL (2016 Nissan Rogue SV 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"At approx 13000 miles (4 months since vehicle new) vehicle started click/pop from front end when backing and turning simultaneously. Condition infrequent at first then increasing in frequency over time. Evaluation by purchasing dealer at 15716 was able to replicate sound, but offered no solution. Evaluation by different Nissan dealing at 18161 resulted in replacement of both front springs, both front strut mounts and seats. Issue has was resolved"

Von F., TX (2016 Nissan Rogue SV 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Squeaks and rattles in the roof and rear of the vehicle"

Anonymous, BC (2016 Nissan Rogue SL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, MS (2016 Nissan Rogue 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

Anonymous, FL (2016 Nissan Rogue SL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"related to the steering problem."

Anonymous, VA (2016 Nissan Rogue SV 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Shocks or struts

"Correction - This was a problem within the first 1000 mile required 2 visits to correct this problem...Never really have enjoyed this vehicle like some of the other Nissans I purchased."

Billy S., TN (2016 Nissan Rogue SV 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"After having the car for one month, I started to hear clicking noises coming from the front wheels when turning at low speeds. Took it to the Nissan dealer and they stated there was a bulletin on the issue, which was a manufacturing defect in the strut mount assembly. They replaced both in the front wheels and it was under warranty"

Anonymous, NC (2016 Nissan Rogue SL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Defective Struts. Nissan aware of problem and so is part mfgr - Nissan will/has not implemented a recall YET. Dealers lobby to get parts to fix from parts mfgr"

Anonymous, NC (2016 Nissan Rogue SL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Loud clunking sound when turning wheel at low speeds. Problem with strut towers"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Nissan Rogue SV 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Clunking sound (for lack of a better word) coming from the front end during low speed turns. Nissan replaced the struts and bushings. Problem went away.... so far. There was a TSB for this problem on the 2014 and 2015 models. As far as I know they haven't issued one for the 2016 model"

Anonymous, AR (2016 Nissan Rogue SL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"There was a tsb sent out to all dealerships about the front strut making a load piping noise when turning left or right either moving or standing still.the dealship has had two opportunity to fix 2nd time worked"

Karl F., VA (2016 Nissan Rogue SV 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Clunking sound when turning"

Anonymous, NY (2016 Nissan Rogue SL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Within the first 2000 miles a rattle/knock sound came from the front of the car. First they said it was the strut mounts. Those replaced, the noise returned. Replaced the strut mounts again. This required three trips to dealer which was on the opposite side of town. Finally problem resolved. Not called a recall but rather a service bulletin."

Anonymous, OH (2016 Nissan Rogue S 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The car was making a clanking noise since new, the dealer replaced both front springs including the top mounts. this didnt fix the issue so the dealer replaced the steering rack. this didnt fix the issue so the dealer replaced the driver side front strut and spring assembly entirely which made the issue go away for about 3-4 months and now its slowly coming back but only when the vehicle is driven in reverse in certain situations"

Anonymous, TX (2016 Nissan Rogue SL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"When turning either direction the Struts would make loud clicking sounds. Dealer replaced both struts at about 1000 miles."

"SPEEDS LOWER THAN APPROX. 50 MPH THE STEERING WHEEL HAS A VIBRATION"

Billy S., TN (2016 Nissan Rogue SV 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Wheel bearings

"Had loud noise that got worse as speed increases. Was told it was the wheel bearing and that it was cornered under the drive train warranty (5 yr, 60K Miles) BECAUSE the failure on the wheel bearings is frequent."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Nissan Rogue 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Mel S., ON (2016 Nissan Rogue SV 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"same thing as other item"

Anonymous, TN (2016 Nissan Rogue SV 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Display screen goes blank

"Has done it since the car was new. Occasionally when you start the car the navigation screen is blank and may take a few minutes to turn on. This is when you need it most becasue you may be backing out of the garage. We reported to our dealership twice but because it was working by the time you get to them they do nothing."

Anonymous, OK (2016 Nissan Rogue SL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"HAS OCCURRED A FEW TIMES - SERVICE CAN FIND NOTHING WRONG - COMES BACK ON ITS OWN 10-15 MINUTES LATER"

Anonymous, AZ (2016 Nissan Rogue 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Routine software updates

"The connection from the car to my Smart phone ceased to function. The excuse given was that a software update had taken the phone out of the system. It considered the phone, one that is still currently available (Samsung A5) as not sufficiently modern to justify keeping it in the mix. I said, Wind it back> They refused. Curiously the phone will sort of work in the care but sporadically and will still not dial out, perhaps the one good reason to even bother with it. Typical of Nissan service. They will fix what they think they want to; not what I want them to."

Kerry G., ON (2016 Nissan Rogue SV 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Voice control commands

"Prefer to use Siri to Nissan system. Nissan's voice control is very cumbersome"

Anonymous, FL (2016 Nissan Rogue SL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"Car air conditioning would go on and off and of course during some of hottest days, it would blow cool air and then very warm air and if turned off for short period of time cool air would blow again but again for a short time."

Anonymous, IN (2016 Nissan Rogue SV 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"A/C stopped working, took three trips to the dealer to determine it was an electronics issue"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Nissan Rogue SL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"broke"

Howard S., NY (2016 Nissan Rogue SV 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Automatic climate control

"When it was cold out, the heat would stop and cold air would start blowing in the car. In the summer when I had the AC on, the AC would stop cooling and the heat would come through the vents. The problem was fixed."

Anonymous, IL (2016 Nissan Rogue Unsure 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Leak condensation tube"

Anonymous, OH (2016 Nissan Rogue SV 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"It takes anywhere from 20-30 minutes before it cools off. It keeps switching blowers from front, back and below and turn it self off I'm usually home when it finally cools off"

Anonymous, MO (2016 Nissan Rogue SL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"When riding for more than an hour, the passenger side air heater stops working. It warms up when you dial the a/c up to 92 degress. We went to the dealer and they could not fix it"

Anonymous, IL (2016 Nissan Rogue SL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"One figures that when you set an automatic climate control to a certain temperature, it will adjust the cabin temperature to that point and then blow that temperature. The Nissan Rogue automatic climate control did not do that. When the automatic climate control was set to 61, it would blow air at 53, yet when it was set to 62, it would blow air at 83. Needless to say, we'd have to fiddle every few minutes to be comfortable. Also, if you have dual zones, you expect the passenger side to blo"

Greta C., VA (2016 Nissan Rogue SV 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"AC shut off - fan kept going but the air coming out was hot - it was 90 degrees in August. Got the run around from the dealer - told us we weren't setting it right and that we needed to keep it on recirculate all the time. Treated us like we were idiots. Took it back 3 times! Weather hasn't been hot enough this year nor have we driven it on a long enough trip with AC to know if it still needs work. We figure they're waiting for the warranty to run out. Also, unrelated to AC - the motorized"

Heater system

"I explained the issue in my previous text."

Anonymous, IL (2016 Nissan Rogue Unsure 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Heating system has been fixed by Nissan a couple of times and we now believe it has been repaired"

Anonymous, (2016 Nissan Rogue SV 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Heat is not consistent between both sides."

Paul K., AB (2016 Nissan Rogue SV 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The heater had one vent (driver center vent) that blew very hot air ( while the other vents blew significantly colder air. It was inconsistent, and did not matter the outside temperature, the interior settings, or how long the car drove. It became so bad, we had the car into the dealer three times to be fixed, none of which actually fixed the problem. We then entered arbitration with Nissan and returned the Rogue as a lemon"

Greta C., VA (2016 Nissan Rogue SV 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Heater out in cold weather varies between driver and passenger by as much a 8 degrees C. Hard to regulate. Dealer has replaced heater box but no improvement. This seems to be a design flaw."

Paul K., AB (2016 Nissan Rogue SV 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Antilock system (ABS)

"During a heavy rainstorm, the ABS warning system began to flash. It advised a major malfunction occurred and the manual said take it to a dealer for repair. Very expensive solution for moisture in a sensor connection."

Anonymous, OH (2016 Nissan Rogue SL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Normal routine brake wear

"braking was not as effective"

Anonymous, FL (2016 Nissan Rogue SV 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Premature brake wear

"Rear brake pads less than 10% life verses 30% on front brakes. Most of my driving is highway 75% With 84000 km at time of repairs required. Based on my 50 years of driving experience fronts typically experienced greatest wear. In addition to brakes 2 other issues of concern noted. Automatic headlights switch subject to constant reset. Switch movement is a dangerous driving hazard. Rear trunk light location very poor. When trunk is full of bags light is blocked and offers no lighting. Must be ceiling mounted to offer effective lighting not side panel location."

Anonymous, (2016 Nissan Rogue SV 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Pulsation or vibration

"Pulsation on braking caused by worn and rusted rotors. Rotors replaced for first time since new."

Anonymous, ON (2016 Nissan Rogue SL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, BC (2016 Nissan Rogue SV 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Stainless trim over passenger door window came loose due to plastic part it is glued to broke. There are no marks in the stainless indicating an impact that might have caused break."

Anonymous, IL (2016 Nissan Rogue SV 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Driveline vibration

"At 38000 miles right rear wheel bearing Failed! Service manager told me this was a common repair."

Anonymous, IL (2016 Nissan Rogue SV 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Driveshaft or axle

"I noticed the car RPM gauge would accelerate and then return to normal, same would occur when car was on cruise control. Final indication was when I got off the highway and stop at the top of the ramp, when I tried to accelerate truck was not only sluggish but I thought would not get through the intersection, but it did eventually get moving and a few days later took it to dealer for repair."

Anonymous, IN (2016 Nissan Rogue SV 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Had to replace drive shaft"

Anonymous, ON (2016 Nissan Rogue SV 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Electrical failure

"During a period of 2 months I would be driving on the highway when without warning the car would be travelling 100kmh and the speed would drop down to 60kmh. Flooring on the gas pedal did nothing. It was terrifying especially when you're in the middle lane and can't get over to the shoulder because of traffic and the truck behind you has no idea that my speed is limited. This is called a limp mode. This happened at least 7 times during this period. As well the ASC alert would come on and the brake lamp switch was replaced 3 times because many times I would drive with the brake lights on. To rectify all this Nissan rewired the engine and dash."

Anonymous, ON (2016 Nissan Rogue SV 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Traction control

"The tires that come with the Rogue are HORRIBLE. They have VERY little traction with any amount of moisture on the road."

E P., TX (2016 Nissan Rogue SL 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, clutch replacement.

What Owners Say

Transmission rebuild or replacement

"A month or so ago the CVT transmission started hesitating. Then it occasionally wouldn't shift and it would cause the RPMs to go up significantly at a low speed making it un-drivable and unsafe. It had around 54,000 miles when this started. It is currently at the dealership and the CVT transmission is being replaced free of charge because of the 60,000 mile/5 year powertrain warranty."
