The Sentra looks good on paper but then doesn't quite live up to expectations. Redesigned for 2013, the Nissan is noisy and underwhelming to drive. Sentra's best quality is that it has one of the roomiest rear seats in the class. Another plus was the availability of some attractive options for not a lot of money, which should make it quite attractive on the used car market.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2013 Nissan Sentra owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, clutch replacement.

What Owners Say

Transmission rebuild or replacement

"Dealer tried to repair the transmission and finally replaced it. It had been slipping and finally there was a grinding sound and the car jerked and was very sluggish top speed 40 mph"

Steven L., AZ (2013 Nissan Sentra SL 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"The Nissan Sentra CVT transmission is prone to failure and very expensive to fix. $4100 for an new transmission in an economy car is horrible. Ours failed at 76,000 mile, and Nissan would not cover any of the cost. They will cover the cost of a new transmission for 2010 cars and older, but not newer one. There is a class action law suit working it's way through the courts, stay tuned. I would not buy a Nissan again."

Anonymous, CT (2013 Nissan Sentra SR 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Transmission failed catastrophically while driving. Left transmission fluid & little metal transmission bits all over the road."

Miguel M., WI (2013 Nissan Sentra 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"2nd transmission replacement for apparently common transmission problems with the primary manufacturer of the trannies for 2013 Sentras. Transmission completely fails after first beginning to shift sluggishly and revving higher than normal before first gear shift. 1st replacement turned out after ~2,000 miles to also be defective; thankfully, was warrantied so 2nd replacement was at no personal cost. Note that these are automatic transmissions"

Michelle B., VA (2013 Nissan Sentra SR 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Transmission was slipping and was replaced free of charge even though it was out of warranty. Apparently it has been an issue in these cars"

Anonymous, NB (2013 Nissan Sentra SR 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Had to unlock shift in order to get it out of park. Dealer said the transmission was broken and needed to be replaced"

Anonymous, NM (2013 Nissan Sentra SL 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"CVT stopped working at about 78000 miles repaired under warrenty fluid replaced 62000..Nissan places CVT in Nissan's but not in Inifinti's the reason, reliability"

Anonymous, TN (2013 Nissan Sentra S 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"took complain to home office"

Thomas L., NY (2013 Nissan Sentra SR 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Loss of power and metal particles"

Anonymous, WV (2013 Nissan Sentra SV 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

Joe B., VA (2013 Nissan Sentra 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"The GPS, radio, backup camera, hand free calling system is all one unit. It died almost 37 months after we got the car with a 36 month warranty. Factory replacements list at $1400, but are not available"

Anonymous, CO (2013 Nissan Sentra SL 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Same as previous note. All systems are integrated"

Joe B., VA (2013 Nissan Sentra 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
Radio

"Cannot control the volume or tune the radio with the radio knobs have to use the steering wheel controls. Even then it jumps from station to station on it's own accord. You have to wait until it stops or turn the radio off then back on. Dealer ordered a replacement radio about 6 weeks ago, still hasn't arrived!"

Steven L., AZ (2013 Nissan Sentra SL 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"radio failed twice since we owned car. Both times it was repaired by dealer."

Anonymous, PA (2013 Nissan Sentra SR 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"volume & tuner doesn't work, have to use the steering wheel control for volume and station presets only. will not tune with knobs or control volume"

Anonymous, AZ (2013 Nissan Sentra SL 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Squeaks or rattles

"When driving over 50 mikes per hour, there is a distinct rattle coming from somewhere around the dashboard. It's tough to figure out what it is because I can't stick my head under the dashboard while driving"

Erwin M., CA (2013 Nissan Sentra SR 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Somewhere under the dashboard - passenger side - rattles for 1st mile or so and then stops. Squeak in trunk impossible to find"

Alexander A., TX (2013 Nissan Sentra SV 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
Wind noise

"The wind & road noise makes it very difficult to carry on a conversation. When listening to the radio the volume has to be very high when exiting the freeway and stopping at a light, you must turn the volume down. There should be a decibel rating for Road Noise inside the vehicle."

Steven L., AZ (2013 Nissan Sentra SL 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

"This car can never stay aligned! Brought it to numerous mechanics, who repair it only to have it go out of line again!"

Jill P., CT (2013 Nissan Sentra SR 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
Shocks or struts

"Complained to dealer about steering and hard ride front end bottoming out. Didn't address situation until NEW front tires wore out in less than 6 mos! Then the said OH! someting is wrong let us check it out! The Extended warranty paid for repair but not the tires"

Steven L., AZ (2013 Nissan Sentra SL 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Shocks/struts car seems to ride rough and bottoms out on small bumps they say it's standard on vehicle. will try with dealer, but difficult because we live out of the dealers area. no loaner. gotta go to work"

Anonymous, AZ (2013 Nissan Sentra SL 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"car was 'bottoming out' on slight bumps. dealers service gave me a hard time about fixing the problem. Nissan basically told me they had no control over dealer service. after the dealers service made it worse they made it somewhat better but not 100%"

Anonymous, NY (2013 Nissan Sentra SL 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

Harry B., NJ (2013 Nissan Sentra S 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Roof Trim Moldings easily come loose in automatic car washes. Lost one of them completely and had to reglue the other before the same thing happened to it. Getting a replacement from the dealer proved to be its own nightmare. At first they couldn't figure out what it was called and then it took over three months to order and receive it. Granted it's just cosmetic trim with no real function, but still found that a little ridiculous."

Michelle B., VA (2013 Nissan Sentra SR 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
Loose interior trim or moldings

"Loose trim that makes up the passenger side of the windshield"

Anonymous, NJ (2013 Nissan Sentra SL 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

Apr 26 2016
If the frontal passenger air bag deploys in the event of a crash when a child seat is installed in the front passenger seat, there will be an increased risk of injury to the child in the CRS.
Summary:
Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2016 Sentra vehicles manufactured June 4, 2012, to April 9, 2016. The front passenger seat belt bracket may become deformed if it is used to secure a Child Restraint System (CRS). The deformed seat bracket may cause the Occupant Classification System (OCS) to incorrectly classify the installed CRS, resulting in the front passenger air bag to not be turned off as designed when a CRS is in the seat.
What should you do:
Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will reinforce the seat belt bracket as well as reprogram the Air Bag Control Unit (ACU) and OCS Electronic Control Unit (ECU), free of charge. The recall began on June 13, 2016. Owners are warned not to install a CRS in the front seat. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669.
