Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2009 Pontiac Vibe owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Antilock system (ABS)

"corrosion to electrical connection (sensor) to rear bearing caused abs and esc to light up on dashboard which meant no abs/esc on vehicle. Had to replace bearing and electrical connector wire for abs/esc to function again on vehicle."

Steve S., NY (2009 Pontiac Vibe Base 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"ABS, Traction control and Stability control all failed do to electrical connections failing Twice in last 4 years."

Anonymous, ON (2009 Pontiac Vibe Base 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Quit working, had sensors replaced"

Anonymous, OR (2009 Pontiac Vibe Unsure Unsure)

"Periodically the antilock brakes, traction control, and stability control will stop working for a few minutes"

Anonymous, WI (2009 Pontiac Vibe GT 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"rear passager ABS sensor needs repair"

Anonymous, MI (2009 Pontiac Vibe GT 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Calipers

"One of the rear brake calipers was sticking, making noise. Took to shop, they could not rebuild it, so I had both rear brake calipers changed"

John M., IN (2009 Pontiac Vibe 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Took to shop and told them I heard break noise in right rear and thought I needed a break job. They checked and said that everything looked fine. After driving another couple hundred miles I had metal on metal. Caliper was bent and destroyed the rotor as well costing me a lot more to get repaired the 2nd time around. I blame the shop more that I blame the part for failing"

Don N., MI (2009 Pontiac Vibe Base 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"callipers required maintenance because of previous owner neglect"

Greg C., NS (2009 Pontiac Vibe Base 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"rear caliper were not working properly - parking brake not holding when engaged. corrosion"

Steve S., NY (2009 Pontiac Vibe Base 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"a rear cylinder piston operating the calipers froze, making the calipers drag."

Anonymous, OH (2009 Pontiac Vibe Base 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"The brake pad holders on the rear calipers were too tight for the brake pads and the pads seized in them causing premature pad and rotor wear and noise. The caliper pad holders were ground and lubricated to allow movement of the new brake pads when replaced. CR lists this model year as hard on rear calipers and this could be part of the problem. Once again, no recall by the manufacturer."

Anonymous, AB (2009 Pontiac Vibe GT 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"I have owned the vehicle for over 11 years and I live in the northeast where we use lots of road salt in the winter. The rear caliper pistons finally corroded to the point they no longer functioned properly and I had to replace the calipers along with new rotors and pads."

Anonymous, NY (2009 Pontiac Vibe Base 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Rear caliper stuck. Caused rotor damage, etc."

Anonymous, MN (2009 Pontiac Vibe Base 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
Master cylinder

"Leaking master cylinder was replaced"

Anonymous, FL (2009 Pontiac Vibe Base 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
Normal routine brake wear

"Hey, vehicle brakes are a wear item. After over 90,000 klm I found the need to replace pads and rotors."

Anonymous, ON (2009 Pontiac Vibe Base 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"This car actually belongs to my partner, but we share it. She had been wondering about the brakes because they were squeaking a bit. I suggested having the shop look over the whole brake system. They found major brake work needed to be done, although I don't remember what, specifically. I think the brake pads needed replacing, the brakes were flushed, and maybe parts like the rotor and/or caliper were serviced or replaced. The bill was about $800, so I think there was some serious work more than routine brake pad replacement and brake flushing."

Timothy L., (2009 Pontiac Vibe)

"Brake pads were worn at 150k miles. Original pads. Replaced OEM pads and rotors."

Anonymous, IN (2009 Pontiac Vibe Base 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Brakes replaced every 24 months per excess parking and rotor rust."

Anonymous, DC (2009 Pontiac Vibe Base 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Corrosion of brake rotors A lot of road salt is used in the winter in syracuse ny. About every 3 winters(sometimes after 2 winters) I have to replace rotors(and pads) because of severe corrosion (pitting, rust) which creates less usable surface area for brakes pads and also chews up the brake pad itself. to fix problem replace rotors and brake pads."

Anonymous, NY (2009 Pontiac Vibe Base 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Front brakes were worn"

George A., MI (2009 Pontiac Vibe Base 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"The front brake pads worn down sooner that the rear"

Mike M., IN (2009 Pontiac Vibe Base 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"We've had to replace both the front and back brakes. It was normal wear, but the dealer's service department did not tell us we would be needing the back ones done soon when the front ones were done and we waited too long to have them done"

Anonymous, OH (2009 Pontiac Vibe Base 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Replaced rear brakes"

Michael T., NY (2009 Pontiac Vibe Base 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"had new rotors and brake pads installed --- this was normal wear and tear"

Anonymous, WI (2009 Pontiac Vibe Base 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Brakes needed replacement due to wear"

Anonymous, ON (2009 Pontiac Vibe Base 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Premature brake wear

"Brakes (Rotors and Pads) I find last a maximum of 3 years on this car."

Lance S., NB (2009 Pontiac Vibe Base 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"I was told that because I don't use the brakes enough to keep them dry in the winter when parking (manual transmission) that they rust faster. Had to have the rotors replaced. I use the transmission to slow me down instead of riding the brakes"

Anonymous, MT (2009 Pontiac Vibe Base 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Rear disc brakes. Pads & rotors wear unevenly due to there susceptibility to dirt and corrosion. Need to be disassembled and cleaned every 8 months to ensure function"

John P., ON (2009 Pontiac Vibe Base 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Brake pads replaced a year ago but not rotors. This year brake pads had to be replaced again because the rotors needed replacing. They said a year ago rotors were ok however obviously this just caused a second brake job to be done within a year."

Lance S., NB (2009 Pontiac Vibe Base 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"I would experience it under high speed braking. Problem was resolved with new front brake pads and rotors."

"The brakes wore out prematurely and when I had them repaired they apparently were put on wrong and wore out again and I had to repair them again, but this time they aren't making any noise so assume they are fixed right this time"

Jeannette B., MT (2009 Pontiac Vibe Base 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Pulsation or vibration

"I had the rotors and pads replaced in 2018 and the problem has returned. Vibration and shaking when braking from over 45 mph."

Anonymous, NC (2009 Pontiac Vibe Base 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Front tires would vibrate under braking. Problem was resolved with tire rotation."

Rotors

"wear quickly, but I live in snow country and expect it/"

Susan M., NY (2009 Pontiac Vibe Base 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"wear & tear, not out of service ever because of that, just maintenance to replace them"

Mary K., IA (2009 Pontiac Vibe Base)

"The dealership mechanic said they were worn and would probably fail at some point. He recommended replacing them. The brakes had not been operating optimally anyway, and they were squeaking like hell, so I gave in and let them replace everything. If I had to do it all over again, I'd just replace the car."

Anonymous, AL (2009 Pontiac Vibe GT 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Now on second set of rotors. First set were warped and were replaced. Second set were also warped, but were turned and trued, and have been ok since then"

"Brake pads wore unevenly"

Anonymous, NB (2009 Pontiac Vibe Base 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"They get rusty which causes squeaking, handling difficulty and sometimes a "thumping" noise. I have to have them cleaned about once a year"

Denny B., MI (2009 Pontiac Vibe GT 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Squeaking

"On heavy long braking, the car has a grinding sound just before it stops. I have been to more than one brake/dealer shop. No one seems to be able to pinpoint the cause. I have had all the brakes, rotors etc. replaced. That seemed to lessen the noise but not eliminate the noise ."

Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, leaks.

What Owners Say

Catalytic converter

"Rotted out and caused O2 sensors send errors and to shut off traction control. Bad system!"

Scott K., PA (2009 Pontiac Vibe GT 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Exhaust leaks

"A leak developed in a section of the exhaust pipe, and/or muffler, I'm not sure where. Replacing it was not routine because an OEM or off-the-shelf replacement pipe was not available. The shop had to custom-make a pipe to fit, which took a little over a week. It works OK, now, but the pipe can sometimes scrape pavement if going over a bump. Like I said, there is no off-the-shelf replacement part, so if another one was needed, it would also be expensive to make (again)."

"This car had airbag service twice under warranty. We were suspicious this year when the dealer informed me that the clockspring had to be replaced at a cost of $450. My mechanic repaired it for $400 but found some physical damage that was causing the horn not to work. It was likely done during prior warranty work. I suspect sabotage, or at the very least incompetence by the dealership!"

Randy L., FL (2009 Pontiac Vibe Base 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Airbag recalled for passenger side, GM notified me, I called a local chevy dealer. After over six (6) months ,I called dealer and found out they completely mixed up my data with someone else's . Since the air bag warning light was now on and the recall had not been satisfied, I assumed that the cause of the warning light was the defictive airbag that hadn't been replaced. GM rep stated that air bag warning light was a different repair and would be paid for desperately if I wanted to go ahead with the air bag recall. I said go ahead like I had any choice in the matter. It turned out the passenger air bag was the cause of the air bag warning light. When the air bag was replaced, the warning light went away."

Anonymous, SC (2009 Pontiac Vibe Base 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
