Worse Better
Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. Road Test

This edition of the Saturn VUE is a big improvement over the model it replaced, with more agile handling, a quiet and pleasant ride; as well as standard stability control. Inside the cabin, higher quality interior materials are used, and levels of fit and finish are much improved, but the front seats are uncomfortable and lack adequate support. The 3.6-liter V6 engine in our tested XR model is smooth and refined, and provides strong acceleration. But the VUE’s fuel economy is among the worst in this competitive segment. Long stopping distances also cost the VUE points.

A/C compressor

"A/C compressor needed replacement, will on 19000 miles of use on it"

Anonymous, (2008 Saturn Vue XE 3.6-L V6)

"compressor clutch failed, which caused other associated parts to fail. This same thing happened to the car when it was 5 years old. One retired GM engineer/neighbor of mine conjectured that it had something to do with the frequent cycling off and on of the engine at stops and a design problem. This car is a hybrid."

Richard S., NC (2008 Saturn Vue 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"AC completely stopped working and needed a new compressor, took the mechanic a week, several days longer than they promised so this is no them not the repairs. at 50,000 miles i do not feel the AC should have failed"

Louis W., NY (2008 Saturn Vue XE 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Not much to tell; the master (I think they called it) o2 sensor went. Problem is, if you don't fix it, it'll cause other systems to fail. It actually made my A/C stop working- I actually thought I needed a Freon charge when I brought it in. Turned out the Freon was fine and the sensor had gone. It happens, but the thing that bugged me the most was I'd already replaced the o2 sensor three years ago"

"Problem presented while on vacation roughly 700 miles from home. Transmission intermittently would not shift out of first gear. Generally could address the immediate issue by stopping and restarting the engine, but this sometimes required several such attempts. Fortunately, we did not experience the problem on the trip back home and were able to have the issue resolved at a local shop."

Anonymous, IN (2008 Saturn Vue XE 3.5-L V6)

"Timing chains that stretched and had to be replaced with upgraded, hardened ones were a known common issue to this engine during this time. Due to low number of miles driven vehicle out of warranty for very expensive repair"

What Owners Say

Engine computer

"Was at a gas station waiting for the pump and, just before the pump was free for me to pull up and gas up, my car stopped running, while in park, and would not turn on. After about 20 minutes of playing with the battery and other things under the hood, I was ready to call AAA. However, closing the hood jarred something and the car started again.
