Subaru’s three-row SUV, with has impressive all-around performance. The Ascent’s smooth ride, functional interior, and slick power delivery helped lift it to success. The Ascent has a turbocharged four-cylinder engine in a segment where V6s dominate, which might seem to be a disadvantage on paper. But in real-world driving, the SUV feels zippier and more satisfying than its numbers suggest it should be.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"The Ascent has a firm yet forgiving handling. It has a 4-cyl turbo that drives like a V-6."

Anonymous, IL (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"Very powerful. Slight turbo lag. Smoothest transmission I have ever had."

George K., VA (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"Quick, quiet, and fast! Pretty much perfect."

Robert J., PA (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"Previously owned a Subaru Outback 2014 which we really liked. Subaru fixed all our negatives with comfort & noise."

Keith K., GA (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"The acceleration with this new turbo-charged Boxer 4 is really amazing and I am going to have to watch out that I do not get a speeding ticket driving it!"

Gordon E., CA (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"The Subaru acceleration is adequate, the handling is good when the lane departure warning is turned off. When this feature is turned on it drives me crazy"

Anonymous, SC (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"Acceleration is very good; stronger than the Forester and Crosstrek. Some (including CR) have complained about the handling but I see no problem."

John T., NY (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"Gas pedal is very sensitive at start from stop. Car wants to move out quickly. It’s OK, but takes a little getting used to."

Anonymous, SC (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"It definitely feels like a turbo, but has adequate power and overall good mileage"

Anonymous, CO (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"Good acceleration and respondsive steering. The eyesight system makes driving in traffic much easier."

Anonymous, CO (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"Ride is taut but not harsh. Handling is not sporty feeling, but so confident that you realize you are going faster without effort or drama. Plenty of real world power to do what you need."

Paul H., MN (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"Handles well. Small turn radius. Great acceleration. Quiet ride."

Anonymous, GA (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"Better acceleration than the Outback I had."

Helmuth H., FL (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"The acceleration on this car is great! Power is available on demand whenever needed, from a dead stop or on highway! This was one of my biggest concerns with this new model, since the engine is brand new and i wasn't able to test drive the car before pre-ordering it back in February. I've driven it now for 1 month and have no regrets!! The engine is great! I haven't had to tow anything yet, but for my needs, it has exceeded my expectations!!"

Chris M., ME (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"Good acceleration and excellent handling."

James M., FL (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"Overall a sweet ride with in believable power and pick up. I have to be careful not to speed because it drives so well I don’t realize just how fast I am going. The car picks up speed so quickly you have to really look at the speedometer to see just how fast you are driving. It is a great solid car and a sweet ride. Bad nothing stands out just yet but we have only had the vehicle since the middle of June."

Jennifer C., MA (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"The drive is like a space ship compared to my other four SUV’s that we have owned. The handling is great, I love the automatic transmission hold in stop and go driving. It allows you to take your foot off of the accelerator and it holds the vehicle in place after applying the brake at a stop. And the best part the acceleration, the 2.5 turbo 4 feels faster than my previous 3.5 Saturn V6. It is a rocket in traffic after 40 mph."

Jerre K., FL (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"The Ascent accelerates effortlessly. The turbo four never seems overworked. The power is very linear without the feeling of a turbo power band. It handles very well for a big mid-size SUV. On curvy roads it is very sporty and planted, yet on bumpy roads it rides very compliant and smooth. It seems to defy physics!"

Patrick W., NC (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"The turbo has a lot of power. I was concerned about a turbo because I have never driven one. I have since changed my mind. I am impressed."

Gerry F., NC (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"Handling is very good, minimal body sway, handles uneven surfaces well, comfortable at highway speeds ( driven for extended periods of time at 130 km/hr) acceleration is surprisingly good considering the weight of the SUV and size and ratings of engine , breaking is excellent"

Louis G., ON (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"Good acceleration. Lane watch takes some getting used to."

Timothy C., CT (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"Turbo can be jumpy and I despise the simulated shifts, dont know if its the shifts or the transmission that feels like it cant find the right gear, but oh it dont even have gears..?"

Gregory C., CA (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"The turbo engine in my Ascent really surprised me. The acceleration and performance on the Interstate highway is way above what you would expect from a 4 cylinder engine, and the MPG I get just adds to its pleasure."

Anonymous, IN (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"For having a 4 cylinder it accelerates much better than I anticipated"

Christopher W., IL (2019 Subaru Ascent)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"I am a big, 6’4‿. The Ascent is one of very few vehicles where I don’t necessarily have to run the seat all the way back and all the way down. The ride and handling are delightful. So far, very happy with the way it drives."

Paul H., MN (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"Very comfortable and excellent visibility"

Anonymous, MA (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"Coming from a 2008 Ford Edge Limited I found the Subaru Ascent to have a smoother and more comfortable ride more acceleration and although it is larger handling is a tad better. We tried several SUV,s before buying the Ascent , Explorer, Highlander, Volvo XC90 and the Traverse. We felt the Ascent was better or comparable. I’m still not certain on how the well the driver seat comfort will be on a long trip. I find myself trying to tweak it for a little more lift in the front. Possibly using the thigh support extension on the driver seat will help."

Anonymous, MA (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"Very comfortable seats."

Helmuth H., FL (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"The seats are really comfortable, much better than my last SUV. The noise level on the highway is the best of the last four SUV’s that we have owned including the outback."

Jerre K., FL (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"Subaru stepped up its game with the Ascent. It truly feels like a luxury vehicle. I traded in a Highlander, and it's not even in the same category as the Ascent. The seats are firm yet comfortable, and they make you feel like you're in a "sport" SUV. The Ascent is quiet yet you can hear the distinct note of the boxer engine. Great music! The ride is compliant, yet sporty. On a bumpy road, you seem to float across it like a KTM dirt bike, yet it handles and corners with very little body roll. Simply an amazing vehicle. You can definitely feel the love from Subaru with the Ascent!"

Patrick W., NC (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"This car is wonderful! Solid, quiet, and performs perfectly."

Robert J., PA (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"Has all the adjustments need to find the perfect driving position."

Anonymous, IL (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"Best quality seats I have ever experienced. Firm, comfortable and multiple adjustment options. A little noisier on the interior ythsn I expected. Ride is not as cushy as I expected."

Charles K., CT (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"The cabin is very quiet. Seats are soft and comfortable, bet not too soft. Ride is very good, Handles poor roads in Pa very good. Instrumentation and controls well placed."

R K., PA (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"Very quiet and smooth ride."

Anonymous, NE (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"The Ascent is very nicely appointed with virtually ever comfort on the Touring line one could imagine; including, yet not limited to, Rain Sensor Control, Air-Cooled Front Seats, and wonderfully comfortable seat. One drawback is road-noise is rather high. The Ascent would have it all with lower road noise."

Wesley W., TN (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"The seats wrap around and are very comfortable. Seat controls are easy to use."

Anonymous, GA (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"option for captains seats in second row, also amazing drivers seat for the price with thigh support"

Anonymous, MA (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"Have driven other SUV's and this is far more comfortable. First trip was to and from Southern California and the ride was very comfortable."

Anonymous, CA (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"The Ascent is quiet, comfortable and easy to handle! I pushed for the car & now my husband loves it!"

Keith K., GA (2019 Subaru Ascent)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"Best value in class. Best value in driving and safety features Comfort and convenience features"

James M., FL (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"Helluva lot os safety features, all standard."

Anonymous, CA (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"Comparing features in my 2019 Ascent, i got all wheel drive, eyesight, high rated safety and durability at a cost comparable to other vehicles base pricing."

Anonymous, IN (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"Terrific vehicle, all the greatness of Subaru but more. Rides like a dream. Has all my bells and whistles"

George K., VA (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"I traded in a Forester. Moving up was a smooth transition. The Ascent feels like other Subarus I've owned, but it is much roomier and has stronger acceleration."

John T., NY (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"Great, best value"

Louis G., ON (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"looked at a lot of similar cars, best deal for the money in terms of the impressive safety equipment."

Anonymous, MA (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"Considering all the safety features (Insight) included on the Ascent as standard, and other auto manufacturers charge for, or require upgrading to more expensive levels, this was the deal maker for me. In addition, many other features were available as standard on all models."

R K., PA (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"I think this vehicle is a terrific value for its size and features at the price"

Anonymous, SC (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"I felt that all the safety options came standard. The acceleration handling pickup were best in its class. The style design and finish of the interior was so much nicer than other cars in its class. Overall felt for the price I paid and the options I received it was the best bang for my buck. Plus Subaru tends to be the best cars liked by consumer reports overall reliability. Best purchase in a car so far!"

Jennifer C., MA (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"Pricier than what I'd normally be willing to pay, with each succeeding ride in the Ascent I believe I've gotten more value than what I paid. Each mile is worth every cent!"

Wesley W., TN (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"Excellent value"

Jeffrey O., CA (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"True value will only come after multiple years of ownership, however the purchase value is great. The Ascent has standard all wheel drive and safety features you can only find on vehicles that are 10’s of thousands of dollars more. With 8 passenger seating, 5,000 lb towing and large cargo area with the seats down it provides more seating, passenger room cargo space, towing, and comfort and convenience features than most of the vehicles in this class at a lower price. Fit and finish look good and although not as plush or loaded down with frills like massage seats and wood trim as some others you still get a feeling of quality. Some option packages do force you to buy items you many not want ie for Navigation you must buy the package that includes a panoramic moon roof. I do question the use of fiber like sound deadening material in the rear wheel wells and exposed underbody. I question how well this will hold up to road impacts, water, snow, ice, salt and high pressure car washes. After driving in heavy rain it felt moist which makes me wonder if it will promote corrosion."

Anonymous, MA (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"A roomy and quality 3 row suv with an excellent Star Link system and with numerous safety systems."

Anonymous, NE (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"I feel that for the money spent, the Subaru Ascent has the best value. All of the standard safety features usually cost extra on other brands."

Anonymous, CO (2019 Subaru Ascent)

"The Subaru Ascent is loaded with safety features at every trim level that would add thousands of dollars to the price. We went ahead and bought this model because we were concerned that tariffs would drive up the price on what we think may become a high-demand model.."
