Subaru Ascent

Subaru’s three-row SUV, with has impressive all-around performance. The Ascent’s smooth ride, functional interior, and slick power delivery helped lift it to success. The Ascent has a turbocharged four-cylinder engine in a segment where V6s dominate, which might seem to be a disadvantage on paper. But in real-world driving, the SUV feels zippier and more satisfying than its numbers suggest it should be.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2019 Subaru Ascent owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Android Auto

"The navigation system refused to pair with Android Auto and Waze at all until the service manager changed a setting. But in general there is just about no guidance about how to use Android Auto or any app with the in-car system leaving us lost when something doesn't work and unable to take advantage of having the system."

Anonymous, MA (2019 Subaru Ascent Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Apple CarPlay

"I keep having to buy new power cords in order for my phone to sync with the car. Annoying. I've told the dealer however they didn't see the problem. So I just keep buying new power cords"

Anonymous, (2019 Subaru Ascent Premium 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Backup or other camera/sensors

"The camera is lighted. The light doesn't come on until about 30 seconds after putting car in reverse. This only happens from a cold start."

Anonymous, TX (2019 Subaru Ascent Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Started from purchase. Occasionally the screen goes dark when backing up."

Anonymous, CA (2019 Subaru Ascent Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
CD player

"My self copied CD got stuck in CD player. Dealer said warranty only covered prerecorded CDs. They said car might be non functioning if repaired because radio would need to be removed and shipped somewhere. Recommended I go to car radio place in town. Either way warranty apparently has small print about using CD that is not prerecorded. It also does not cover “courses in tape” CD."

Dana W., IA (2019 Subaru Ascent Premium 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Display screen freezes up

"No sound on radio or microphone. You can see radio stations and move about the display. There is a X through the speaker icon. It resets itself after being turned off for at least 15 minutes. A quick turn off and turn on does not reset the display."

Anonymous, MI (2019 Subaru Ascent Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Turning off the car and then restarting resolved it"

Anonymous, IL (2019 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"After clicking on CarPlay, (with the phone plugged into the phone, often times I will be listening to a recorded book on my phone, and the CarPlay media switches over to Pandora. if I close the Pandora app and open my book app, repeatedly CarPlay switches me back to Pandora. Very frustrating. Technician said they didn't notice this was a problem with my Accent."

In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"If I manually input a destination address in the Chicago & suburbs area it recognizes the address, but cannot calculate a route to that address. If I give it a verbal command to go to the same address it is able to recognize the address and complete the route calculation."

Gerald S., WI (2019 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Radio

"Twice now it has just stopped working, no radio. The only thing you can get to play is the XM radio on the advertisement channel. We are not subscribers to XM. Tried stopping and restarting the car with no luck. The next day it started to work again both times."

John K., MN (2019 Subaru Ascent Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Actually minor; the pre-sets disappear. Subaru states they are aware and are working the issue. And the radio sounds like it is a 1960's vintage radio."

Ralph H., (2019 Subaru Ascent Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The starlink Head unit quit playing all sound. Radio, phone, cd, navigation, hands free voice commands, whatever. Dealership updated the software, but that didn’t fix it. Now they want me to come back so they can install a new head unit and amplifier (this comes with the. Harmon Kardan system). I don’t think this will fix the problem, as a quick internet search shows this. To be a very widespread problem.with Subaru vehicles. Anyway, I read on one forum that pulling the radio fuse would clear the issue, so I tried it and it worked. This is not an acceptable long term fix, but at least I have radio until my next service appointment. Also, the dealership uses a third party answering service for their service department so you don’t ever actually speak with an employee in the service department when you call them. Problem is, after you leave your name and number, no one ever calls you back to make an appointment."

Matthew E., GA (2019 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"It doesn't remember the preset stations."

Anonymous, NJ (2019 Subaru Ascent Premium 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Radio would delete my phone contacts, it did it several times. The head unit was replaced and it had the same problem although it didn't do it as often."

Anonymous, (2019 Subaru Ascent Premium 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The problem with the radio began on Nov. 15, 2019. I tried to correct the problem and finally called the dealership on Nov. 18, received an appointment for Nov. 22nd. I told the technician the radio acts like it is starting but just shows initialization, does that over and over with no sound and the buttons do not work. The dealership had to replace the audio unit and the radio assembly according to the paperwork they handed me when they returned the vehicle."

Anonymous, IL (2019 Subaru Ascent Premium 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Radio just stopped working. No sound. Then it would work fine. Then stopped again. No rhyme or reason."

Anonymous, TX (2019 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"radio quit several times while driving. i returned after the car was turned off and started up again. this was corrected by the dealer with a programming up date. the biggest problem was that the car was delivered with a bad battery and it quit five times over an eight month period, each requiring emergency attention to get started again. i told the dealer service what was wrong after the first event but the aggravation continued for many more months and they finally agreed to replace the battery."

Voice control commands

"Voice command controls seem never to work. When using navigation while driving, it defaults to voice command. It never works, freezes up, and in one instance rendered the radio and navigation inoperable on a long distance trip. Eventually, after shutting off the car, it reset itself, but voice command seems never to work."

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Pulsation or vibration

"I report this problem to the dealer and they told me that this problem is known by the company ant they are working at it but I never had any news from them at this moment. I still have the problem."

Rejean F., QC (2019 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The pulsation/Vibration came with the new vehicle. The problem was we did not drive the car to our home, we drove it around the dealership. My wife and I are senior citizens, live at a lake and the roads are not kept up and ride rough. Add to that a car that vibrates and rides rough, and it is very frustrating, loud and hard to hear the radio or carry on a conversation. We returned the auto to the dealership several times and complained, but when it was test driven on smooth roads it did not pulse or vibrate noticeably. When we asked the tech to drive on our roads at the lake (11 miles from the dealership), he finally agreed there was a problem and entered a work order for work to be done to correct the problem. However, when I returned days later for the work to begin "the young receptionist at the dealership very rudely informed me that in the future when I brought my car in for servicing, not to expect their technicians to be gone for 2 hours on a test drive out to my home trying to figure out what was wrong with my car.""

Rotors

"In less than a year of ownership the Rotors became warped. I never experienced warped rotors in the first year of ownership of a new car. I noticed the issue only on my long road trip whenever I had to hit the brakes at higher speeds. I wonder if its due to the new tech of auto emergency braking."

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"The A/C unit stopped working completely - we squeezed in the repair under the 36,000 mile warranty, but them immediately felt we had to purchase the extended 100.000 mile warranty to be safe. That is not the quality we expected out of a Subaru."

Anonymous, MO (2019 Subaru Ascent Premium 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"There was a slow leak of coolant. Dealer recharged once when car was only a few months old and had problem again the next year when it got warm. That's when they concluded that there was a leak. Leak was due to faulty valve."

Anonymous, (2019 Subaru Ascent Premium 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"On an easy freeway jaunt of 150 miles it completely blew the A/C compressor! Not a good intro to a "outstandingly reliable" product. In short, when the opportunity presents itself it will be good bye Asent!"

Anonymous, AZ (2019 Subaru Ascent Premium 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Automatic climate control

"Maybe I missed something.... The largest problem was the battery drainage when the tailgate was opened and we were camping. If the key fob is near the vehicle, the battery drains within a couple of hous. (Check Subaru Ascent Forums on Google and search for battery drain to see similarr issues.) (And excuse the quirky r key on my keypad... Sorrrrrry.) Also A/C was not functional this summer, even though we were in Juneau AK. Didn't expect to need it, but it was how and the car was sweltering. Having it looked into tomorrow, though Subaru Customer Service and rrepair has been abysmall to work with."

Sherri H., VA (2019 Subaru Ascent Premium 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"It is the worst climate control system that I have ever had in a car. It can't be set and left if the outside temperature changes. When it gets cold outside the system keeps blowing hot air even though the inside of the car is comfortable. I have to turn it down as low as it will go to stop the hot air from blowing out. I have told the dealer and they don't think it is a problem. I think an automatic control system should keep the set temperature no matter how hot or cold the outside temperature is. I regret buying this car because of the problems with regulating the temperature inside the car."

Anonymous, TX (2019 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Blower (fan) motor

"Heard a squeaking noise in the front-end (heard better in the cab then outside). Thought it might be the front wheel bearings or a squeaky brake pad. Took car to dealer 18 Feb 2020-confirmed sound and determined it was a faulty blower motor which had to be ordered. The blower functioned well-it was just making an regular squeaking sound. Returned 2 March 2020 to have blower replaced (Under Warranty) and the matter appears resolved."

Refrigerant leaks

Anonymous, CA (2019 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The Ascent probably came out of the factory with this problem. As soon as weather became how, noticed the problem. Dealer needed to order a part -- took 4 days for part to arrive and car to be repaired. I was loaned a brand new ascent during that period. very satisfied with transaction."

Anonymous, UT (2019 Subaru Ascent Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The car came from the factory with a refrigerant leak. After the first few days, the A/C no longer produced cold air. The dealer recharged the system and added dye, and a week later there again was no cold air. The dealer found a cracked refrigerant line."

Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, clutch replacement.

What Owners Say

Transmission rebuild or replacement

"The transmission make strange noises and hesitated"

Cheryl R., AZ (2019 Subaru Ascent Premium 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"It took 3 times going to the dealer to have the transmission addressed. Each time all dashboard lights came on including the Engine Light. Each time all safety features were disabled because of this. The Subaru dealer could only turn off the lights and turn the safety system Eyesight back on, but could not repair the vehicle because the problem was intermittent and they could not duplicate it. The dealer knew what the problem was, but Subaru headquarters needed proof. The third time this happened, the vehicle also started making a screeching sound. This happened 2 days ago. The dealer has the vehicle at this time and we were given a loaner vehicle. It is unclear when we will get our Ascent back."

Anonymous, AZ (2019 Subaru Ascent Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The transmission started acting up at around 500 miles. The dealership didn't believe me at first. Check engine light kept coming on. The wiring harness finally came back as bad and then when they replaced that the transmission itself also had to be replaced because it had been damaged as well."

Anonymous, (2019 Subaru Ascent Premium 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Started in September of 2019 at 10,000 miles. Took one week to be replaced. Dealer provided loaner."

Anonymous, MI (2019 Subaru Ascent Premium 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Car was jerking and not operating smoothly."

Anonymous, (2019 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The transmission problem occurred in September 2019. It took about a week for the Subaru service department to replace the transmission under warranty. I was told it was an issue with some of the first issue Subaru Ascents."

Anonymous, TX (2019 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Transmission made a squeaking sound when it engaged. They took the car back and gave us an essentially brand new car for a loaner while the diagnosed the problem and eventually installed a replacement transmission. We haven't had any issues since."

Anonymous, CA (2019 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"When the Ascent was built Subaru had unknown number of vehicles with defective transmissions during that particular week. Subaru reached out to us and replaced our transmission."

"Started with rough shifting, then squealing noises, then bucking. Dealer replaced transmission at 6,000 miles"

Anonymous, MA (2019 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The transmission started to slip intermittently. In highways mostly."

Anonymous, MA (2019 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The car was a demo model with about 3500 miles on it. About three months after I got it, the car seemed to hesitate when accelerating. The tachometer would indicate higher revs, then lower, then higher, even when car was idling. High-pitched whining sound from engine area. I had read about this issue on some Subaru forums, so wasn't unprepared. I recorded the noise it was making to play back to the dealer in case they couldn't replicate it. Called the dealer, drove 50 miles to the dealer, dropped it off, and they determined that they would replace the transmission. It was replaced while I was on a European vacation, so not sure exactly how long it took, but it was ready when I returned in three weeks. Have not had any problems since."

Anonymous, SC (2019 Subaru Ascent Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Three transmission repairs; finally had transmission replaced. Service rep said that the transmission was a new model for the Ascent. After new transmission was installed, car simply stopped on busy highway...very dangerous situation that required a police cruiser to park behind us with flashing lights to warn oncoming. Decided we did not want to keep the car any longer. Before invoking state's Lemon Law, spoke directly to Subaru America customer service. The were OUTSTANDING (unlike the transmission), and offered a new replacement vehicle or refund of purchase price. We chose the refund. Too bad because we had such high expectations of the Ascent, especially since Subaru had such a good reputation for reliability. The overall vehicle was nice, except for the faulty transmission. We've since read that lawsuit has been filed against Subaru regarding faulty transmissions. But again, the customer service was exceptional."

Anonymous, CA (2019 Subaru Ascent Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Gear selector or linkage

"Problem since bought vehicle. After being in park, have to apply a lot of force to get gear into drive or reverse. At times will make a loud clunking noise. Worse if on any type of incline"

Anonymous, (2019 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Rough shifting

"The CVT transmission sometimes jumps around at lower speeds. It may shift up or down when it is not supposed to."

Anthony K., NY (2019 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"This vehicle has had many problems overall. Goes into the shop regularly. The CVT simulates shifting, but does not do it well at all. A recall has been been issues for the recall already completed. Continues to hesitate, slips and doesn't shift properly. Acceleration is not smooth, even at a constant RPM."

Anonymous, AZ (2019 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"When driving on a smooth flat road the transmission is constantly bumping and hesitating like it can't make up its mind what to do. When driving in stop and go traffic the transmission feels like it disconnects when you are coasting and then when you press on the accelerator there is a hesitation for a couple of seconds and if you press further on the accelerator the turbo kicks in and you accelerate hard. It is hard to drive smoothly in stop and go traffic."

Anonymous, MN (2019 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Fix was replacement of faulty valve body and transmission wiring harness. Solved the warning display issue. Very satisfied with result and love the vehicle. Took 3 weeks to resolve, Subaru covered full cost of a rental vehicle for us."

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

Alignment

"Vehicle was unstable on the road. I likened it to the early days of power steering, my son in law said "squirrely." First (selling)dealer tried 3 times to discover/fix problem and then tried to convince me the vehicle was normal. Changed dealers, second dealer fixed the problem by a careful alignment."

Anonymous, AZ (2019 Subaru Ascent Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The vehicle pulled hard to left, unfortunately, it took several visits to dealer over a few weeks to address and while much better, it still feels a bit off."

Anonymous, NJ (2019 Subaru Ascent Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Shocks or struts

"At 5400 miles we heard a noise when turning. The service department of the Subaru dealer said it was the strut mounts, and replaced them. However, the problem persisted. Now they have replaced a strut, and the problem may be solved. We find this unacceptable on a brand-new car."

David H., CA (2019 Subaru Ascent Premium 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The front struts would make a loud crunching sound when I went around an off camber down hill corner."

Anonymous, (2019 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The right front strut had to be replaced after about 3000 miles. It was making a clunking sound like it was bottoming out when driving on rough roads."

Anonymous, OK (2019 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Springs or torsion bars

"The back end kept squeaking like someone was bouncing on springs. Took to dealer and they couldn't find anything wrong. Wrote in to the Subaru forum and found out other people had the same problem. Contacted dealer again. They called to tell me they ordered new springs (not sure if springs or struts) and have had no problem with that noise since then. On another note, have noticed slits in rubber seals on both front doors. Took it to dealer again and they could also see the tears (slits) and will replace. Final thing at this time is that there is a noise coming from the right front wheel when traveling slow over a rougher road. The repairman could not ever hear the noise when he drove it. My opinion is that Subaru was rated so high by Consumer Reports that people were wanting them and the company was simply throwing the things together to get them out to the public. They were not taking the time to make sure each vehicle was tested and safe."

Anonymous, (2019 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Mirrors

"Drivers side mirror does not go out far enough to cover the blind spot for tall drivers with the seat moved rearward. In the fully left position, can still see the side of the vehicle and behind it. This causes headlights of the car directly behind to reflect directly in drivers eyes."

What Owners Say

Driveline vibration

"For a CVT transmission, it's very jerky. We underrstand it has some prreset shift points, but my question is why? The dealerr can't explain."

Sherri H., VA (2019 Subaru Ascent Premium 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Terrible sound & vibration front front wheel area within 2 weeks of purchase. Took it in & it needed a part. Dealership said it was a known problem & covered under warranty. I believe it was the shocks & struts. Replaced then within a month, other side doing same thing, so it had to be replaced."

Anonymous, OK (2019 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Electrical failure

"Three times it has failed to start. All the electronics come on, but the engine does not. THEN you can't turn the car off, so you are stuck waiting for the car to go into a battery saving mode where it shuts the electronics off again. Then it can be started normally. This usually takes over an hour for it to shut off, which means you are stuck wherever that is until then. I have taken the car in twice about it, and they never find anything wrong. They asked me to take a video which I did. I am waiting to hear from them about it."

Power Equipment

Cruise control, clock, warning lights, body control module, keyless entry, wiper motor or washer, tire pressure monitor, interior or exterior lights, horn, gauges, 12V power plug, remote engine start, alarm or security system

What Owners Say

Battery (not hybrid or electric)

"A one year old battery is dead, because the electronics don't stop unless you lock the car when you leave. Even if the car is in the garage."

Anonymous, WA (2019 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Electronic ignition

"Within first 2 weeks of ownership vehicle locked into accessory mode instead of starting. Also battery went dead while sitting in garage for a two day period. Attempted to return car (Had about 250 miles on odometer. Dealership and Subaru of america refused. Had to be towed. Dealership can not find problem. Within this 2 week period emergency breaking system hit breaks with no significant cause. Driving about 55mph/car entered from cross street at least 300yards away. Now with about 3000 miles last week car started in garage, would not go into reverse. Instead warning beep. Started and turned off multiple times with same result. Self corrected about an Hour later. Dealership informed basically said it didn't happen"

Anonymous, NC (2019 Subaru Ascent Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Ignition switch

"Old problem (from day 1). Fob gets out of synch with the car. For the first year, I was told many times that there was no problem, yet there was. I notice that this year, when you call the Subaru help line, they now give you a procedure to get the fob,etc back in synch. Why can't they fix the synch problem. My wife is afraid to drive the car (and we bought it for her) for fear of getting stuck somewhere, unable to start the vehicle."

Anonymous, WI (2019 Subaru Ascent Premium 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, leaks.

What Owners Say

Exhaust leaks

"large amount of smoke when you start the car in the morning."

Anonymous, NY (2019 Subaru Ascent Premium 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Other/unsure

"Vehicle is difficult to control. Appears that steering wheel is not connected to the wheels (actually it is not, I've been told). Vehicle wanders in the traffic lane so lane departure signals are often active, requires constant input to keep in the lane. Vehicle drifts one way or the other randomly, not one consistent direction. I describe it ass like the early days of power steering (I was there!)"

Check engine light, sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor), emission control devices (includes EGR), engine computer, engine computer, fuel cap, fuel gauge/sender, fuel injection system, fuel pump, fuel leaks, stalling or hesitation.

What Owners Say

Anonymous, MD (2019 Subaru Ascent Premium 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor)

"All of the engine warning lights lit up. I took it to the dealer where problem was diagnosed. Again, a part was needed. The gave me another Ascent as a loaner. It took about 4 days for the repair. Not much of an inconvenience. It was actually an oil control valve issue."

Anonymous, UT (2019 Subaru Ascent Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks.

What Owners Say

Oil leaks

"Our (non-Subaru) mechanic noticed an oil leak in our 2019 Subaru Ascent (5400 miles). At the Subaru dealership they stated that the oil leak was coming from the turbo iol line that connects at the timing cover. They installed a new union bold and washer. How is it possible that this happens in a brand-new car??"
