Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2016 Subaru Crosstrek owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"Eyesight safety and all other safety features will shut off without warning during driving"

Anonymous, HI (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Right side blind spot monitoring rarely works, probably only sees a vehicle in the blind spot 1 out of 10 vehicles even missing large tractor trailers. Reported twice to Subaru and still no resolution"

Tim W., TN (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The indicator line showing the width and distance sometimes do not show up - meaning they are not on the display"

Jay T., VA (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Most of the time, it works perfectly. But sometimes, it can take up to 30 seconds after the car is put in reverse for the camera to come on. It didn't start doing this until about six months ago. (At other times, it takes the camera up to 10 seconds to turn off after the car is put in drive, but that is an extremely minor annoyance.)"

Bailey D., FL (2016 Subaru Crosstrek 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Display screen freezes up

"1. Can't change SiriusXM stations This car has very low mileage, so I'm not confident that the problems I have with the Outback won't happen here. Restarting the car solves the problem"

Anonymous, FL (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"My display screen just freezes. Sometimes if I turn off the car it resolves for a day or so."

Anonymous, OR (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"The unit sometimes will not pair with my phone or I have to re-enter information to make it do so."

Anonymous, NM (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The USB port is on bottom of center storage console and has resulted in many issues of plugging in phone"

Anonymous, NC (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Inconsistent connectivity with iPad! Sometimes worked, other times not."

Joseph S., WA (2016 Subaru Crosstrek 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"I don't like the nav system,...difficult to use, not intuitive, poor graphics, settings need to be rechecked each time I use it. I had a Toyota nav system in 2006 Prius that was so much better than this one in every way.(so my complaint is not due to lack of experience)"

Kathryn Y., MA (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"I HATE the Nav system. It is my only complaint in 3+ yrs. it's not user friendly and the screen might as well be blank most of the time because the graphics are all pale/dull colors , with no contrast and I have to take off my glasses and peer closely at the screen. Toyota did a much better job in my 2006 Prius. I had a Toyota Prius with Nav system for 10 yrs with no problems, I could see screen clearly and I regret not buying Rav4 instead of Crosstrek for this reason only."

Kathryn Y., MA (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Phone loses sync with car, has to be reset."

Anonymous, CO (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The system un-pairs from time to time and also looses all the radio station presets. A second new audio unit is on order right now as the dealer can't seem to fix all issues with this unit."

Anonymous, NM (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Pairing does not always carry over when the car is turned off. May be a Blackberry Q10 issue."

Anonymous, ON (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Difficult to pair with fairly current Android phone; constantly disconnecting and reconnecting, especially during calls; very outdated infotainment system"

Anonymous, NC (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Bluetooth repeatedly disconnects and needs to be reset. Have ttried it with several phones - so its not the phones. instructions in the manual are confusing and poor and i have gotten tired of resetting it and jhave stopped using it. Dealership folks happily reset it in three minutes, but it does not stay funtioning for very long"

Anonymous, MA (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Radio

"Occasionally the controls don't work although the radio still plays."

Anonymous, CO (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"SiriusXM was working great for several months, then one day 2 months ago I get in the car and it said to call SiriusXM to activate my subscription. I did, several times, and then SXM said it's not an issue on their end and to take it to Subaru. Dealer tried to reflash the software and do something else, but it did not work. They replaced the entire headunit after a week"

Zeid N., NY (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Voice control commands

"The way the system is built, you actually have to take your eyes off the road to look at a list of phone numbers to choose from. It is a big safety concern"

Anonymous, PA (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"car often didn't recognize my contacts - last year primarily. Often had to pick up my phone. I understand they may have improved this with the new models."

Anonymous, VT (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"The back window was leaking in rain. Deep puddle of water gathering under the spare tire. The body shop fixed the seal around the hatch back window and it fixed the problem"

Anonymous, NY (2016 Subaru Crosstrek 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The outlet of the air-conditioning drain got plugged and water was dripping under the glove compartment"

Anonymous, QC (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Squeaks or rattles

"Intermittent rattle in driver's side dash where speaker is located. When rattling, I can place small cloth over the area to stop rattle."

Kelly A., NM (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Rattles. Inconsistent noise - sometimes in the passenger side door, sometimes the dashboard. Also, when driving at highway speeds (around 65 mph) quite often there is a noise in the right rear that sounds like a strap or something hanging out of the door."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Rear hatch squeaks sometimes while going around corners or over bumps"

Chris N., SD (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"an interior rattle sound; the dealer has attempted to fix it twice, but it has come back each time"

Anonymous, IL (2016 Subaru Crosstrek 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Baffles were crushed and were rattling in the car."

Paul P., MO (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Loud rattle in front suspension. Have been told it is not serious problem and cannot be fixed."

Anonymous, AZ (2016 Subaru Crosstrek 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Wind noise

"The road noise for this vehicle is excessive. It may be a combination of wind, transmission and tires on the road. I constantly have to raise or lower the radio volume depending on the speed I'm going in order to hear it comfortably"

Larry R., FL (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Wind and electronics. I often switched to using a headset when using my phone because people could not understand me. The car was loud."

Anonymous, VT (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Noisy when over40 mph"

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

What Owners Say

Anonymous, CT (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Loose interior trim or moldings

"rear door on both side the molding trim that provides interface between door and body has come loose and continues to come off when you open and shut the doors"

Edward S., OR (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"paint chips much more than any other vehicle we have ever owned"

Alan H., WV (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"paint on hood started to have fade spots"

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"A standard chip on the hood as a result of road debris had shown the low quality of the paint. Wants to chip off more unlike other vehicles I've had in the past"

Anonymous, VA (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"It seems to me that the coating is kind of soft and damages easily and often appears to have poor adhesion to the plastic substrate. BTW, my subaru is 2015 not 2016"

Anonymous, PA (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"numerous places on hood of paint chipping and body beginning to rust at those spots."

Anonymous, MI (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Rust

"OUR CROSSTREK IS A 2013, NOT A 2016. I have tried to correct the model year in previous surveys. I won't mention it again. This car belonged to my late mother-in-law, who purchased it new in 2013, in Florida. She had a severe stroke later that year, so the car had very low mileage when we had it shipped to us in Oregon, in 2015. There were a couple of rust spots on the car when we took possession, meaning the rust developed less than two years after the car was manufactured."

Barbara T., OR (2016 Subaru Crosstrek 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

"had to replace calipers at about 36000 km"

Anonymous, ON (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"One of the rear brake pads 'shattered' (in the words of the mechanic)."

David O., NB (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Brake pads required replacing at 15000 miles. Was done under warranty. Brakes are not used excessively and should not have worn out at this time."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Four years old, driven an average of 4000 miles a year shouldn't need front rotors and brakes replaced completely!"

Anonymous, PA (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Had vehicle in for check on why my MPG was on average below what combined is listed for my car, and it rolled over several times before starting. It is the only car in the last 8 that I've owned that hasn't got at least 2 mpg more then the EPA combined rates for it. I always fill up, and log every drop of fuel in my cars on fuel economy.gov, so I have the records and know what I'm talking about. I normally do my own maintenance but because I wanted to put in new plugs, I decided to take it to the dealership so they could do that and a computer check.. Even though I only had just over 50,000 miles they recommended that I do the 60,000 mile service, and this cost me over $700.00. That entailed new plugs, OLF, air and cabin filters, brake fluid flush, differential oil change, and several other checks which included the brakes. I was told I needed both front and rear brakes and rotors because they were worn and rusted. That was going to cost me $1100.00 for standard factory brakes. I declined, went home and ordered much better quality high performance Power Stop Z23 Evolution Sport Brake Upgrade Kits, brakes and rotors for both front and rear for around $350, and installed them myself. My rotors could have been turned,(the rust was on the edge) and the pads were not that close to their wear indicators especially the rear. At the moment I don't know if my mileage has improved, but starting has not, and as far as I could tell they didn't even do the computer test. I think they just wanted to get my money while I was there."

Shari D., MI (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The original brakes lasted more then 70K the new ones lasted less then 30K which created pulsation and vibration the maintenance was done by a dealership no after market parts."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Pulsation or vibration

"The brake calipers or brake pads have become warped so when I put the brake on they stop the car but they are very bumpy and vibrate badly. I had my brake pads replaced in 2018 so it may be faulty installation. I have an appointment for next week with my repair guy, not the dealer."

Anonymous, MA (2016 Subaru Crosstrek 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Rotors

"No garage, infrequent use during bad weather, visiting daughters riding the brake when borrowing vehicle = worn rotors/brakes."

Linda M., NY (2016 Subaru Crosstrek 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Squeaking

"I live in a partly gravel road. Small rocks tend to get stuck between rotor (disc) and metal protector. It scratches the rotor. I need to back up or take the wheel off and clean or unstuck the rock."

"Hybrid power start/stop battery needed replacing. Subaru wanted $800 for new battery. Instead I went to an auto-parts store and got an after-market Duracell battery for a Toyota Prius, which had exactly the same specs in power and form factor, for less than $200."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

Dale L., WI (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, leaks.

What Owners Say

Catalytic converter

"My check engine light came on and stayed on. Subaru fixed it and then 2 weeks later the check engine light came on again. Subaru fixed it again, 2 days later the light came back on. Subaru said that it was a sensor related to the catalytic converter. When Subaru could not fix it, I took it to my own private mechanic. She fixed it permanently. She said that Subaru had replaced the wrong sensor."

Jana G., CA (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Other/unsure

"Right side blind spot monitoring only works 20% of the time. Reported several times to Subaru (two different dealerships in TN and VA), they claim it works as designed EVEN after I demonstrated the problem. Blind spot monitoring is essentially a useless feature that I had to pay for."

"sensor went out and had to be replaced"

Anonymous, CO (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"On at least 6 occasions brakes locked up to the point the vehicle was not drive-able. After two trips to a service center it was thought that snow and ice build up in the front wheels was causing a sensor to lock the brakes. Even after temps warmed up this happened but since a car wash where the undercarriage was cleaned it has not happened."

Paul S., WI (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

"Sporadically unable to remove ignition key after shifting vehicle into park"

Anonymous, KS (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Sometimes the key will not come out of the ignition even when the shifter is in Park. You have to move the shifter out of Park and then back in to Park to get the key out."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Transmission sensor or solenoid

"The vehicle key was getting stuck in ignition when vehicle in park/unable to remove key. Shifter guide plate and shift lock solenoid were replaced."

Kelly A., NM (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"It became difficult to remove the key from ignition when the car was turned off. Often it was necessary to shift the transmission again, sometime turn it on again to reset the switch. It required a $600 repair to fix it."

David D., IL (2016 Subaru Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Transmission Major
