Subaru Crosstrek

The Crosstrek is basically an Impreza hatchback with a higher ride height, added body cladding, and large wheels that are intended to give it a more rugged look. The regular Crosstrek's 148-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine helps it deliver a frugal 26 mpg overall, which makes it among the most fuel-efficient SUVs in the class. But this compact vehicle doesn't provide as much cargo room as most small SUVs.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Owner Satisfaction with:

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"Bad, because it surges while driving. Very noisy compared to my Outback"

Marc S., CO (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Car feels very stable. Low noise levels."

Anonymous, MB (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Same as the 2015 Crosstrek I own. Both accelerate well for such a small engine and also corner extremely well."

Anonymous, NV (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"It's a dog for acceleration. Short wheelbase invites poor steering in snowy conditions. No serious room in cargo area."

Anonymous, PA (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Adequate for me, like the manual transmission but it’s the most annoying I’ve ever had to line up engine speed on shifts, particularly with the AC on."

Tim H., NC (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Good, dependable performance"

Clifford W., CA (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Very secure"

Joseph K., VA (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Lots of features for the price, looks, All wheel drive system and handling. Also great gas millage both city an highway. Accelerating is weak but it gets there. be nice if it had another 20 to 40 hp."

Carlos R., FL (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Engine seems to work overly hard. High RPMs when accelerating. Very noisy."

Anonymous, AE (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Wish it had a little more acceleration especially when needing a quick move for passing or pulling out onto the highway. It handles beautifully. No complaints. This car does not fishtail which makes winter driving a lot less stressful."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"I like the size of the vehicle for my small frame. I can adjust the steering wheel and seats and can see the road well."

Anonymous, NH (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Handling, the AWD system in winter ( we see lots of snow) and in the rain"

Louis G., ON (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Does not immediately slow down when you come off the accelerator, while it took some getting use to CVT is very smooth while driving."

Raymond M., CT (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Acceleration—does not have as much “get-up-and-go‿ ability to pass on highway"

Ann S., KS (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"With the mileage I am getting (31.6), the acceleration is more than acceptable. The manual transmission is very helpful in that regard. I don't hesitate to go over 5000 rpm while going through the gears if I need to get moving fast. It is really fun to drive and is very comfortable with long trips. With the 15.9 gallon tank, I get get close to 600 miles on a tank of highway driving. My best ever mpg is 40.7 with some hyper-mileing techniques."

Michael G., PA (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"I would prefer that it had a little more power and acceleration."

Lisa M., CO (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Acceleration is slower than I would like."

Anonymous, NJ (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"The car is underpowered, but they worked on fixing that in the 2018 model. The car handles very well, crisp and agile."

Anonymous, VA (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Very good on wet and windy roads. Total confidence in handling and road-hugging. Acceleration when entering highway is good."

Anonymous, OR (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"When I’m accelerating to merge onto freeway traffic I have to turn off my air conditioning. This is easy to do with a touch of a button but quite annoying"

Melanie F., NM (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Acceleration is not great. It is, however, improved from my 2013 Crosstrek. This is the one real complaint I have about this car. I don't think I would buy another Crosstrek unless Subaru improves the acceleration."

Joanie W., FL (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Drives great & it handles very well."

Bobby J., KY (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"I would like a little bit more pick up from a stop. Otherwise, the car is perfect."

Christopher A., VA (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"As noted previously, the car has excellent acceleration & handling on dry, wet & snow covered pavement That is why we have bought six Subaru vehicles in the past 24 years."

Graham B., ON (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Accelerating from a stop is a little slow (4 cylinder) but it catches up and accelerates well on the highway once underway."

L L., TX (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Handling and overall driving experience is great, but acceleration is slow."

Anonymous, MI (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Handling with this XV Crosstrek is superior! This vehicle makes driving in Mid-West snow fun! Never had any issues with driving through unplowed streets. It barrels right through a foot of snow like nothing and steering holds straight. I test drove a XV Crosstrek during a snow storm and it absolutely sold me itself."

Anonymous, IN (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Handling and performance is much improved over my wife's 2009 Subaru Outback. Acceleration is reasonable and has enough pick to pass on the high. Handling is much precise than the old Outback."

Anonymous, MA (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"acceleration adequate needs turbo option, perhaps as option, would really like to see a WRX version."

Larry W., NV (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Handles great,and plenty of power"

Wayne W., CT (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Little lacking in acceleration engine little noise when accelation but nothing to bother me"

Anonymous, CT (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"great gas mileage"

Gregory P., NY (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"The engine leaves a little bit to be desired (Coming from a 2002 Mazda Protege 5). But the suspension feels great on road and over bumps off road. Very little body roll. It handles forest roads with ease."

Tyler S., VA (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Car surges. Dealer after 3 weeks in the shop could not fix it. Subaru said "within Spec" Resolved90% of the problem by turning off the traction control then turning it back on. Before this we were in the process of selling the car back to the dealer. Neither Sibaru or the dealer figured this out. Will never buy another one!"

Marc S., CO (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"For a small engine it accelerates quickly. Steering and braking are excellent."

Anonymous, NV (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Pretty good acceleration with the manual transmission and it can handle like a sports car if pushed. I can't make the car slide on snow with the traction control on ("donuts in the parking lot"). I am averaging 33 mpg in mixed driving and recently got 40.7 mpg on an all highway drive. Very nice car!"

Michael G., PA (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Though underpowered it is fun to drive and handles far better than I expected."

Stephen W., CO (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Leather seats are comfortable, BUT for the price of the vehicle and the limited edition, these seats should have electronic button positioning NOT a metal bar to pull the seat back and forth. The seats should also be able to go up and down, as I am 5'2", the seat belt lays across my neck even with the seat belt position level on the inside wall all the way down. I tried sitting on a pillow but that is very awkward."

Anonymous, IN (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Car has push button start which when the car gets hot doesn't work properly. There is some type of problem between key fob and sensor located in driver's side door that is improperly functioning and dealer cannot seem to fix. A friend has exactly the same problem."

Frank A., AZ (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"The Crosstrek is a solid dependable vehicle that literally takes you anywhere and everywhere be it the urban jungle drought with road hazards ,the twisty mountain road leading to the country road all of it handled in a solid manner . The car wraps you in a sense of comfort and security with sportu good looks"

Anonymous, NY (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Road noise"

Anonymous, WA (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"more lumbar support, less road noise"

Anonymous, ON (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Horrible seats, very uncomfortable. .noise engine, rough ride"

Karen M., NY (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"There is a higher pitched wind noise when traveling over 50mph. Never could figure out what it was. Just got use to it after a few weeks. But it was super annoying in the beginning."

Anonymous, TX (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"I bought this Subaru specifically for the comfort and leg support of the driver seat. It has exceeded my expectations."

Anonymous, MD (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"No change from the 2015 Crosstrek I own. Both are fine except for the hard seats."

Anonymous, NV (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Took a 9 hour road trip and road in the backseat. Plenty of room and very comfortable. Driving on the freeway is much less stressful with the eyesight system."

Eileen C., UT (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"need more lumbar support and more general padding passenger front seat needs lumbar"

Larry W., NV (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"It's a very comfortable car to ride in."

Mike P., DE (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"The engine and road noise are much quieter than my 2011 Forester. The seats are good. Hitting bumps and pot holes are much quieter than my Forester."

Robert P., TN (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"There is a fair bit of road noise, but not too bad. Ride is phenominal; seats could be a bit softer."

Christopher A., VA (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"My first crosstrek driver seat allowed me to adjust height, new one is limited. Also feel the newer one is also lower to ground, overall i liked the first one best (2013)."

Anonymous, MA (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"The seats are much more comfortable than my 2013 Crosstrek but could use additional padding and automatic seat controls. The noise levels are better than my older Crosstrek but it's still a loud car."

Joanie W., FL (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Quiet smooth ride. Seats are comfortable"

Anonymous, MN (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Comfortable seats, easy to get in and out of. Quiet cabin"

Anonymous, MA (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"the ride is incredibly smooth. There isnt a dirt road i can't take at 30mph"

Nathan D., WA (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"I'm short and the seat pumps up so I have good visibility all around. The seats are comfortable for long rides."

L L., TX (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"The Subaru Crosstrek is really fun card to drive. The seats are comfortable and ride is spunky."

William J., CA (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"The CVT has a huge positive impact creating a very smooth ride when doing local/city driving."

Robert Z., CA (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Even in base trim it has nice seats, ride a little unsettled at times; but fun to drive with the manual."

Matthew L., NY (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"I've only had the vehicle for 2 weeks so my initial impression is that the noise level is satisfactory. The car does have M&S tires which adds to some of the road noise. The car is quieter than both of my 2007 & 2008 Priuses."

Anonymous, WA (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"Extremely high resale, low initial purchase cost, low cost maintenance"

Gerald N., FL (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"A lot of car for $25,000"

Anonymous, FL (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Subaru boasts in its commercials about how safe it’s vehicles are. But, I was unable to get its Eyesight safety package and other safety features in my 2.5 Premium because it came with a moonroof. Subaru should offer all advanced safety features as standard equipment across all trim lines."

Robert F., OH (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Subaru makes sure their cars are designed for safety. Which makes me feel more confident when stepping into the vehicle. I also like the larger print on controls and screen."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"It’s a great little car. It has good power with lots of opinions found on more expensive cars."

Bobby J., KY (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Great car overall! Nice size touch screen. Excellent handling in winter/snowy driving conditions. Great ground clearance. Really like the sporty appearance. Surprisingly large capacity to haul items inside with the hatchback and seats folded down."

Anonymous, WA (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Good quality. Handles well. Economical. More than I expected when I bought car"

Jim B., ON (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"This Subaru is our 6th, 5 OUTBACK & 1 CROSSTEREK. We have been satisfied with them all. We choose Crosstrek because it was much the same package, but smaller with the same clearance. The car has wonderful visibility, good acceleration, 4 wheel handling & a "Safety driving system" second to none ."

Graham B., ON (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"This car handles better in weather better than my 4x4 pickup."

Raymond M., CT (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Great car all around no stopping in snow a safe dependable auto great value for the money"

Anonymous, CT (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Best vehicle for the price on the market."

Clifford W., CA (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"The Crosstrek is all about value from it's ability to take you anywhere in any weather to it's great gas mileage it just all works so well ."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"We thought this was a great value for a small SUV. It’s good looking, handles wells on road and snow, is all-wheel drive, and is well-priced relative to other comparable options. We haven’t had any issues with it since we got it."

Anonymous, MN (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Great small suv that's noisy and needs better seats"

Karen M., NY (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Other than the push button start problem, we love the car. However, the next model up, i.e., Forester, may be a better bargain in the long run. But, we ain't givin' up our Outback!"

Frank A., AZ (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"This is a very good vehicle for the money. It has good acceleration with the manual transmission (0-60 in 8.1 seconds vs. 10+ seconds with the $1000 CVT automatic) and handles like a sports car if you push it. Gas mileage is averaging 31.6 mpg with 80% highway travel."

Michael G., PA (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"This is Subaru # 6 for me. Subaru always provides a lot of extras or standard equipment that other companies charge extra for. Always great value from their cars. They are durable and last a long time with proper care."

Robert C., NY (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"More bang for the buck"

Anonymous, CT (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"My Sport 2017 Subaru Crosstrek gets great gas mileage!"

Anonymous, OH (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"The car offers a lot for the price."

Carlos R., FL (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Overall the best AWD for the price. Strong mechanical built. Excellent driving experience in the worst winter conditions. Comfortable inside and quiet in the city but somewhat quiet on highways. Cope easily with many off-road conditions too. Love the size of that car and gas consumption is very good considering it's a AWD."

Denis D., QC (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"For the price great value"

Anonymous, WA (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"I am extremely happy with the value I got for the Crosstrek. I would definitely buy another Subaru."

William J., CA (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Good value nice ride no repairs"

Anonymous, FL (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Again re an article in consumer reports I got a great deal."

Anonymous, NH (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Great value"

Joseph K., VA (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Good ground clearance and handling. Bad is a slight surging in the engine especially when traction control is on. After 4 visits to the dealer including leaving the car for a week and a factory engineer coming out, I was told this is within specs and is caused by the emission controls."

Marc S., CO (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Excellent value, highly reliable, fuel efficient"

Louis G., ON (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Subaru continues as it's extremely capable and reliable road warrior."

Anonymous, ON (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Fun and easy to drive"

Timothy F., RI (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Like the looks, good interior space, safe, relatively inexpensive, all wheel drive makes for great driving, especially in snow."

Marc R., MA (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Not many options for an all-wheel (or 4-wheel) drive vehicle with a manual transmission. This drives much better than a Jeep Wrangler, and the WRX is too close to the ground for me."

Michael G., PA (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"I bought it because of the ratings by CR & NTSB. Those ratings were warranted. I paid $24.391 for it. Other mid-size new SUVs were more expensive."

Anonymous, NV (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"Comparison with Honda CR-V I believe that the AWD is a better quality with the Subaru. The price point with the features I got were very comparable to the CR-V."

Anonymous, WA (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"All the frills for a great price."

Gregory P., NY (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)

"A capable car that is greater than the sum of its parts. Slow but entertaining and confidence inspiring...love the EyeSight assist system."

Stephen W., CO (2017 Subaru Crosstrek)
