The Impreza is a pleasant and practical car with the most comfortable ride of any small car we'd tested up to that point. This revsed version brought more rear-seat room, a quieter cabin and better fit and finish than the previous model. While its handling was still fairly agile, this Impreza wasn't as sporty to drive as its predecessor.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"reliable sturdy car that also handles well in snow!"

Anonymous, MI (2008 Subaru Impreza)

"The handling is soft. The car experiences moderate amounts of body roll while cornering. The previous generation Impreza's were much more secure handling. Acceleration is average."

Anonymous, AB (2008 Subaru Impreza)

"It handles well. It feels low on power and the four speed transmission is a bit clunky. It hunts for gears on hills."

Aaron S., MT (2008 Subaru Impreza)

"My impreza drives very well but lacks the zip that other cars I've owned before."

Shawn H., NY (2008 Subaru Impreza)

"Acceleration is good for daily use. Handling is very stable and agile. Body roll is average. Understeering is very minimum. Transmission is jerky and slow at times."

Hao T., QC (2008 Subaru Impreza)

"I have always been disappointed in the automatic transmission gear ratios on this car, that result in the engine screaming when it downshifts to go up hills on the freeway. I understand that Subaru has solved this with the newer CVTs."

Jerome P., UT (2008 Subaru Impreza)

"This is my fourth Subaru and second imprezza. Both Imprezza's have been very good handling and economical for all wheel drive."

Anonymous, CA (2008 Subaru Impreza)

"The 2008 Impreza manual is very impressive on throttle response, even without a turbo, and rides much more smoothly on bumpy frost-heaved roads than the 2014 Camry. I do have Hancooks rather than the OEM Bridgestones on the Impreza."

Larry B., NH (2008 Subaru Impreza)

"Holds road very well. Best handling I ever have owned"

Anonymous, VT (2008 Subaru Impreza)

"Handling is excellent and fun on 2 lane canyon roads. Traction is always superior to others when climbing steep grades in the snow and always out-performs beefy pickup trucks and SUVs. Acceleration always has had a disconcerting pause before really kicking in to pass, though I understand Subaru has resolved this issue with more recent models."

Jerome P., UT (2008 Subaru Impreza)

"Car has good acceleration for a 4 cylinder, especially for an automatic. The handling is good, even in the rain. Eats snow."

Anonymous, CT (2008 Subaru Impreza)

"Acceleration is sluggish; handling is responsive. Especially like the all wheel drive for Canadian winters. In the time we have had it, we have never gotten stuck to the point where we were unable to extricate ourselves with a bit of shoveling and a push. Almost as good as a zamboni on ice :-)"

Anonymous, SK (2008 Subaru Impreza)

"Sporty drive and handling. Very responsive acceleration and steering"

Anonymous, NJ (2008 Subaru Impreza)

"Acceleration is good enough for everyday use. Low-end torque is plenty. Initial turn-in is precise, but in-corner stability is not so good due to the missing rear sway bar. With the right tire, steering is precise with enough feedback."

Anonymous, QC (2008 Subaru Impreza)

"Very easy once I got used to it."

Anonymous, WA (2008 Subaru Impreza)

"Handles very well in deep snow."

LESLIE J., CO (2008 Subaru Impreza)

"Excellent handling in snow."

DAVID S., WA (2008 Subaru Impreza)

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Ok ride, ok noise. Seats are too low."

Anonymous, HI (2008 Subaru Impreza)

"Handles well and is very comfortable"

Anonymous, VT (2008 Subaru Impreza)

"The seats are relatively comfortable, however the road noise - especially on freeways - is terrible. You have to turn music up quite loud to hear it, and I sometimes even find it difficult to maintain conversation over the road noise. The ride is not uncomfortable, but I'd hesitate to call it smooth."

Anonymous, OR (2008 Subaru Impreza)

"The engine is noisy, the suspension creaks, the seats are really low (like you're in a deep bath tub). and there's not too much leg room in the front."

Andrew B., MA (2008 Subaru Impreza)

"This is an incredibly cramped little car. A person 6 feet tall will find the driver's seat does not go back nearly far enough for comfort. Noise is loud both from the engine and from the poor insulation against road noise."

Vince P., OR (2008 Subaru Impreza)

"Seating is cramped. Driver's seat will not slide back far enough for an adult male only 6 feet tall to be comfortable."

VINCE P., OR (2008 Subaru Impreza)

"Not much power or pep. Low seats, vents location odd. Fairly quiet ride. Feels old now."

IGNACE J., HI (2008 Subaru Impreza)

"Low seat position is uncomfortable for older drivers and can cause back aches, especially on longer dives."

Anonymous, NY (2008 Subaru Impreza)

"Ride is comfortable, and well composed. Seats fit me well, and I'm 1.7M tall. Cabin is on the noisy side. Wind noise is intrusive."

Anonymous, QC (2008 Subaru Impreza)

"the impreza is a noisy car. Despite having improved noise control over the past years, the road noises are very present in the 2008 Impreza"

Anonymous, QC (2008 Subaru Impreza)

"Seats are too narrow. Legs go numb on long trips. Long trips (more than 3 hours) cause sciatic nerve pain."

J A., ON (2008 Subaru Impreza)

"It does not have a quiet or smooth ride as I expected. Also the handling is not nearly as good on the Impreza as it is on the outback."

Anonymous, WA (2008 Subaru Impreza)

"Road noise is moderate to high. Passenger seat does not have a height adjustment while the driver's side does, so the passenger feels like they're climbing into a bathtub each time they get into the car."

ANNE S., IN (2008 Subaru Impreza)

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"Super value. Car has never given major problems, just normal maintenance. Runs great. Handles well. Great car for the money."

Anonymous, CT (2008 Subaru Impreza)

"Many features for the price point. Comparable competitor models with AWD were either more expensive or less-equipped."

Anonymous, NJ (2008 Subaru Impreza)

"For a car I've owned 10 years, it's held up remarkably well in both styling and performance. With baseline maintenance, it has required minimal repairs, and the design still looks fresh and not dated, despite some major shifts in the industry over the last decade. Easily the most reliable car I've ever owned, and probably the best."

Anonymous, OR (2008 Subaru Impreza)

"Great value for the money. Put little additional maintenance and it runs great."

Anonymous, NY (2008 Subaru Impreza)

"Love the "stick" option system as that's what I grew up driving."

Anonymous, WA (2008 Subaru Impreza)

"I was dismayed to find that 4-wheel drive vehicles require all 4 tires be replaced when 1 is damaged."

MICHELE B., ME (2008 Subaru Impreza)

"best 4 wheel drive <20k"

Anonymous, WA (2008 Subaru Impreza)

"Reliability, winter driving security"

PETER S., MN (2008 Subaru Impreza)

"It does the job I need it to do. No flash and no hassle."

MAX D., ON (2008 Subaru Impreza)

"As a used vehicle, this one has been virtually trouble-free."

KRISTEN-KEVIN L., NH (2008 Subaru Impreza)

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

"Can't confuse this with many cars friends call it "the clam""

Anonymous, NJ (2008 Subaru Impreza)

"I am glad that in the following model year, they did away with those LED rear brake lights, they were hideous."

Anonymous, CT (2008 Subaru Impreza)

"The only negative would be that the redesign of the rear corners created some blind spots. The visibility in my previous Impreza was better."

Anonymous, NH (2008 Subaru Impreza)
