Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2010 Subaru Impreza owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

What Owners Say

Loose exterior trim or moldings

"The plastic liner of the right front wheel well fell off."

Robert S., MA (2010 Subaru Impreza 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Undercarriage lining on driver's side front is loose and falling out. Needs body work to re-affix this lining. Cost is over $1000.00."

Michael B., NV (2010 Subaru Impreza 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The front bumper came loose. I replaced it, and within two years it came loose again. This time I just had the mechanic drill a hole in the body and attach the loose bumper with steel wire."

Anonymous, ON (2010 Subaru Impreza 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The front bumper comes unattached at the side junctions. Sometimes it won't bang back into place. This is the second bumper -- the first one was the same. Also, the front of the car is so low and long that it often catches on parking lot dividers; the bumper cracks and the paint peels"

Marjory B., ON (2010 Subaru Impreza 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Loose interior trim or moldings

"Crack in armrest that now extends for full length of armrest. dealer says it wasn't covered either"

Anonymous, NJ (2010 Subaru Impreza 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The arm rest between the driver and passenger seat cracked."

Robert S., MA (2010 Subaru Impreza 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Very low grade interior from flimsy seats and seating material, cheap carpeting, weakly fastened center console, many noises and rattles that for a car driven so few miles was more than disappointing."

Anonymous, (2010 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Driver side sun visor broke (kept falling down and had to be replaced) Console lid fell apart"

Anonymous, MA (2010 Subaru Impreza 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The inside rear view mirror fell off the windshield. The mirror has several functions, so is connected electronically. The repair required ordering a part plus being glued directly onto the windshield, i.e., the car was out of use for several days."

Anonymous, CA (2010 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Center console fell apart"

Anonymous, MA (2010 Subaru Impreza 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"Minor rust around rear lights"

Anonymous, NL (2010 Subaru Impreza 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The paint on the bumper had been cracking and peeling."

Anonymous, ON (2010 Subaru Impreza 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Oops, I added it to the earlier issue. The front of the car is so low-slung and long (the rear-view mirrors don't line up with other cars' mirrors that the bumper often slides over parking barriers and catches when backing out. Then the bumper cracks and peels"

Marjory B., ON (2010 Subaru Impreza 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Rust

"hatchback starting to rust"

Anonymous, NJ (2010 Subaru Impreza 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Paint chips easily and is rusting"

Mike W., CO (2010 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Antilock system (ABS)

"The ABS failure indicator was on quite often in the winter time. A steady light means that the ABS system failed and seek immediate attention. However, this problem was caused by snow/sleet build-up on the ABS sensor. It was annoying and caused unnecessary concern. However, this was a normal problem with the sensor."

Anonymous, (2010 Subaru Impreza 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Calipers

"calipers are sticking"

Anonymous, OH (2010 Subaru Impreza GT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Car was in shop to replace tire sensor batteries when the mechanic discovered frozen caliper. Would not release the car to me because it was unsafe to drive."

Anonymous, IL (2010 Subaru Impreza 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"bound up did not retract"

Anonymous, PA (2010 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, VA (2010 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Premature brake wear

"BREAKS WEAR FAST"

Jose F., CO (2010 Subaru Impreza 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Pulsation or vibration

"Back rotors out of true after brake reline (at the dealer) the previous year."

Anonymous, WA (2010 Subaru Impreza 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"pulsating brake pedal due to warped rotors"

Michael J., HI (2010 Subaru Impreza 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Squeaking

"We keep having squeaking problems. They check it and there is nothing wrong, but it keeps happening off and on"

Anonymous, MA (2010 Subaru Impreza 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The squeaking on the brakes was caused by rust on the perimeters of the rotors. Before this final conclusion, other solutions were tried like cleaning the rotors, replace calipers, bleeding brake system, etc. Finally the rotors were replaced when they became too thin. However, the mechanic said that the squeaking will come back when the rotor edges start to rust."

Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, leaks.

What Owners Say

Catalytic converter

"Because the cost of replacing cat conv on 10 year old car is more than its benefit, I am currently shopping for a replacement: 2015-2019 with lane assist and forward crash automatic braking."

Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt.

What Owners Say

Cylinder head

"Noticed oil leak. Took it to dealer and another garage and was notified by both that it was a head gasket problem. Both estimates were $2000 to $3500. They had to remove the engine, take the head off, resurface the head. I had them do water pump an"

Paul P., NY (2010 Subaru Impreza 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Replaced the engine under warranty at 48000 km (internal rattling) then 80000km later the head gasket goes - $2200. No excuse especially as it was not a new problem. Should have been fixed many years earlier and Subaru should have covered the replace"

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

Alignment

"Just routine alignment."

Anonymous, MD (2010 Subaru Impreza 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Seems to easily go out of alignment. You have to constantly monitor tire wear as all four tires must be replaced at the same time or the differential wears out. So you cannot just replace front tires. Also only the inside edge of the tires wear so it's hard to notice unless you are down on your hands and knees checking them. A constant annoyance."

What Owners Say

CD player

"The CD player in my car is a combination CD player/radio. It stopped producing sound. At first, I'd turn it on and it would produce sound for a while, then it would make a mild pop and stop. It still seemed to be on, but it didn't produce any sound, no matter how high I turned up the volume. Over time, it began malfunctioning this way more frequently and finally got to the point that it would produce sound only once every couple of weeks or so."

Peter K., PA (2010 Subaru Impreza 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Does not accept CDs any more. Does not play. Does not eject. Basically toast"

Henry M., NJ (2010 Subaru Impreza 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
