What Owners Say
"Subaru knew that the new 2.0 engine had a internal problem with heads valves , head piston rings burning oil . 1 quart per 1200 miles which is ridiculous and Subaru said it's normal which was BS"
Joseph S., CA (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"excessive oil use, rings and all caskets replaced"
J M., OH (2012 Subaru Impreza Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"Leaking oil. Rebuilt under warranty"
Anonymous, WA (2012 Subaru Impreza Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"engine had to be complete rebuilt, including block. defect was completely paid for by Subaru, including rental car. took 41 days for Subaru to get car back to me. very satisfied at this time with there handling this major problem"
Anonymous, FL (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"engine consumes 1 quart of oil every 1,000 to 1,500 miles. subject of major class action suit. Subaru has denied anything wrong with car"
Anonymous, CT (2012 Subaru Impreza Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"burning oil down 2 quarts engine oil light warning. They changed the short block under warranty"
Anonymous, VT (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"At 55000 miles the motor simply "blew". The short block is being replaced as I write this. Vehicle was serviced regularly, synthetic oil , at the time of engine failure, was only 3000 miles old"
Steven M., CT (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"Noticed excessive oil consumption first in December 2013. Learned of TSB for oil consumption in October 2014. Second-level oil consumption confirmed need for replacement of half-block engine"
Anonymous, NY (2012 Subaru Impreza Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"At 30k miles engine began using oil excessively. Documented the problem with the dealer from whom we bought the car. He said this was a known problem with this new engine, and they replaced the engine block at no charge whatsoever to us. Very good"
Dennis W., OR (2012 Subaru Impreza Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"Excessive oil consumption from new, about 1 litre every 1800 km. Dealer monitored from 60,000 to 70,000 km and submitted report to Subaru, who agreed to replace engine (rebuilt short block) under warranty). Since then oil consumption appears more r"
Anonymous, ON (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"Oil light started coming on - was burning oil. Returned to dealer at 59,000 miles. After one year of returning car to dealer for oil consumption tests- dealer stated this week, they have ordered a short block for my car. They said the oil consumption"
Anonymous, VA (2012 Subaru Impreza Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"Valve issue which was difficult for subaru techs to diagnose. Had to take it to a private mechanic to have it diagnosed properly. Engine made an odd joise at rpm 1000. Bulletin had just been released by subaru"
Anonymous, WI (2012 Subaru Impreza Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"The low oil light would come on between oil changes. I would have to add a quart of oil routinely between oil changes. Mentioned it to the dealership and they initially said that was within specs. I started working with a new service advisor who had an oil consumption test done and determined that the car was burning oil. The short block was replaced to solve the problem. Fortunately that was covered by my extended warranty."
Anonymous, CA (2012 Subaru Impreza Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"Engine needed replacement after 60K miles. Dealer completely replaced engine for $800. I am actually very happy with the price and service and feel that I got a new vehicle at the 60,000 mile mark!"
Steven G., FL (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"Oil consumption was extreme. Subaru extended warranty coverage and we qualified for a new short block, no cost to us."
David B., ON (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"Check engine light indicating cam timing sensor failure, but also had engine recall for valve spring replacement. Previously had cam shaft rebuild due to failed engine sealant at about 60,000 miles (2017). This engine is garbage."
Steven P., TX (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"Recall on the engine valves. Valve spring would break and the car would sop dead. Luckily, it didn't happen to us."
Kevin S., PA (2012 Subaru Impreza Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"My car was consuming too much oil. They couldn’t find the problem and replaced the engine free of charge.."
Anonymous, TX (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"One to two months after a valve spring recall the car engine stopped while driving to work. The valve spring had broken allowing the spring fragments and valve to enter the cylinder and contacting and damaging the piston. After a few days in a rental car, the local dealership (not the dealership of purchase), provided a loaner vehicle while the Impreza engine was being rebuilt. While the engine was apart, some additional maintenance was conducted (new clutch, water pump, remains 3 spark plugs, etc.). While those additional items were charged to me, the engine failure repair as a result of the valve spring failure was not charged to me. The loaner car was provided free of charge, and the fee for the rental car was reimbursed by Subaru Corporation."
Michael O., IL (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"burning oil so much low oil light came on three times before 35000 miles. Under warrantee Subaru change short block. At 84000 miles engine blew up. valve broke off and fell into short block Subaru wold rebuild it for $8000 I had my mechanic rebuild it for $5000"
Anonymous, VT (2012 Subaru Impreza Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"A valve broke of and rattled around in the cylinder destroying half the engine."
Robert B., OR (2012 Subaru Impreza Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"The engine was using too much oil, so had to be replaced. We had an oil consumption test done. It sounds like this is an issue with many Subarus of this era. The synthetic oil does not last for 7000 miles as stated. The light would consistently come on at around 3000 miles after an oil change. Other than this, the Impreza has been a solid vehicle. Subaru has treated us well through the problems with the oil consumption and they are standing behind their product."
Katherine L., WA (2012 Subaru Impreza Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"High consumption of motor oil. 1L/2000km. No problem, Subaru offered to change the motor after following oil consumption for a year. With a 10 year warranty for motor. 2012 to 2022."
Marc L., QC (2012 Subaru Impreza Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"This new 2.0 engine was made with bad short block heads burns engine oil within 1150 miles 1 quart of oil , Subaru finally admitted this problem and gave us an 100 k extended engine transmission warranty but it still isn’t right they should have bought our car back or offered a new car"
Joe S., CA (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"Oil consumption has been a problem for years with this car. But until Subaru recently changed the measures around oil consumption we did not qualify for help. The changes meant we did qualify and Subaru Canada replaced the short block"
David B., ON (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"Regular maintenance at 60,000 miles found oil leaking from camshaft carrier. This is apparently a known problem for a certain group of 2012 Impreza's, and it is not covered by warranty after 60,000 miles when it is most likely to develop. I was informed it was because the silicone sealant used for the camshaft carrier area was not enough to maintain the seal with repetitive heating and cooling of the engine over the years. We called Subaru of America about the problem, and Subaru was very respo"
Anonymous, TX (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"Excessive oil consumption issue due to bad piston rings. Mfg replacement of entire lower end of engine. The lower engine was backordered and took just over 3 weeks to replace. Dealership provided a free loaner for the entire period"
Michael C., WA (2012 Subaru Impreza Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"The Subaru uses approximately 1 quart of oil every 1000-1200 miles. My son nor I were aware of this excessive oil usage which resulted in the engine running low on oil which caused the engine needing replacement. Subaru informed me that the amount of oil usage was normal for a 2012 2.0 Impreza. That would mean between oil changes which Subaru recommends every 7600 miles 5-6 quarts of oil would need to be added between oil changes. Why bother doing an oil change when you need to add a quart ever"
Kevin P., NY (2012 Subaru Impreza Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"Repaired under warranty for excessive oil consumption"
Anonymous, PA (2012 Subaru Impreza Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"Engine was replaced due to oil consumption"
Anonymous, SC (2012 Subaru Impreza Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"Excessive oil consumption tested by Subaru dealer lead to short block replacement"
Anonymous, AK (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"Car was in an accident prior to its sale to us. Subaru dealer did not disclose this fact to us to us. Subaru Repair Center, in diagnosing need for head gasket replacement, asked if car had had its transmission rebuilt. This prompted us to go on to Carfax which is when we discovered the repair history."
William M., NJ (2012 Subaru Impreza Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"Unadvertised recall for problem with gaskette. Had 2 major engine repairs under warranty recall that each took 3-4 days. I never experienced the problem that was to be corrected by the repair."
Anonymous, OR (2012 Subaru Impreza Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"The Head Gasket was leaking and added to the regular oil consumption. I had it repaired during another major repair which was a recall."
Bill O., SK (2012 Subaru Impreza Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"My Impreza had a fauly head gasket that needed to be replaced. Subaru did so under warranty coverage (that they extended to owners at no cost)."
Anonymous, MI (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"It was actually CAM shaft that was leaking. Covered under warranty but would have been very expensive to fix otherwise, requires rebuilding engine"
Anonymous, CA (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
"Part of the valve issue. They had to completely rebuild the left side if the engine"
Anonymous, WI (2012 Subaru Impreza Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
